So after the bright sparks at AFL house decided to tamper with the draft even further, the ladder finishing positions of both Port Adelaide and Carlton now pose a very significant problem for the AFL come end of season.
With all the efforts to reduce tanking in recent years, the AFL have basically surpercharged the incentive for these 2 teams. Here's why:
So basically the AFL, after creating these new rules, have set up a race to the bottom for both Carlton and Port.
Did anyone at AFL house even bother looking at the ladder before announcing this? What a mess...
With all the efforts to reduce tanking in recent years, the AFL have basically surpercharged the incentive for these 2 teams. Here's why:
- Both teams have a potential club-tied #1 contender
- The AFL brings in new rules that make it a lot harder to access high end picks under the new system that saw teams get a discount instead
- The AFL then brings in a new rule that rewards clubs for bidding at the top of the draft(end of first rounder)
- Both teams are having poor year and look set for the bottom 4, based off their recent games and lack of talent
So basically the AFL, after creating these new rules, have set up a race to the bottom for both Carlton and Port.
- Both clubs are now incentivized by bidding on the other's player to generate an additional pick
- Both clubs will be desperate to finish lower than the other to prevent them from bidding on their player so they have an additional high pick to spend on another player
- Both clubs are desperate to bring in young talent to improve their lists and won't want to give up a top end pick to match Walker/Cochrane(now requiring 2 first rounders to match).
Did anyone at AFL house even bother looking at the ladder before announcing this? What a mess...
