A hard earned but easy win to Port today bu 20 odd points against South Adelaide at Alberton today. The game was played in bursts by each club, with neither club dominating for an extended period of time. The most dominate period was Ports third quarter, when they kicked 6 goals in the first 15 minutes of the quarter, before letting South kick 3 at the end of hte quarter. Port ended with 8 goals in that quarter. Port never play overly well against South, and the scores are always tight.
Umpiring was ordinary...we have a new "Port Hater" umnpire to join Richard Williams, whos name is Kym Slaven, who is absolutly useless.
There were a few stand outs for Port...Alfy Steed had a heap of the ball and was one of the best. Tony Brown had another 30 odd possesions in a dominating display. Burgoyne was great in defence, and Pooley and Rhino were great in the ruck. Ormond Allen ended with 4 or 5 goals and nearly took the biggest mark in the history of the sport...he jumped up 6 foot in the air to get on an opponents shoulders, he got his hands to the ball, had a fair bit of it, but dropped it on the way down. Phil Mcguiness kicked 5 in a fiar display of form by the tigerman. David Brown was in great form as well. Two young guys - Shane Homes and Nathan Mcdowall were great when they were on the field as well. Our defence was reasonable all day with Tom Carr and burgoyne the best defenders. The traitorous Eugene Warrior played reasonable as well and did a handful of good things. He has a long way to go to be called a port player in my book again tho.
South do not have a bad side (no matter what easty says)...they have a lot of current and ex AFL players (koster, ellen, sampson, talbot, Murray x2, Bishop, Perrie, Brogan, Crawshay, Doughty) and played well all day. They gave their all and only faultered in that 15 minute period when Port kicked 6 goals. They will make the finals this year...thir midfield has a lot of run, and they have a few real good marking targets up forward. Derek Murray was probably best on ground for south, with clay sampson.
