Name one annual game (set date / venue / opponent) that involves a non-Victorian club.

It’s still very much an expanded VFL.
The China game is probably the closest but that’s not even guaranteed. Maybe it will get more traction now a Victoria team is involved.

However the Showdown and the Western Derby are getting attention in Victoria due to quality of the games

It's always dangerous writing off players in their early days at a new club I don't know why the media do it every year.
Because bizarrely enough no one ever collates their speeches even though they have an entire editing department at their disposal. There is more accountability on Big Football with someone diligent going back and collecting someone’s quotes.
I would love to see more of their own words replayed back as a montage of bad predictions

I only caught the back end of it, but on the news segment of On The Couch last night Sam Edmunds was saying something about Chaplin not seeing eye to eye with McCartney and that it might be Chaplin who’s leading the revolt against him....
There isn't anything more "Chaplin" than this.

How / why did we not get anything for him? Gross negligence is why.
Reminds me of the old 2 Ronnies joke. A man is prosecuted for gross* indecency, but he gets off. Turns out he had only been indecent 143 times.

* for the younger ones 'gross' has a number of meanings but one is a measure, a dozen dozen i.e. 144

At work today a Hawks supporter was pretty shirty with Wingard's Easter Monday game. Presenting it to me annoyed/amused as us pulling a swifty in trading him over. Oddly enjoyable even though I can't think I'll ever be putting Wingard down.

It’s just wonderful to read these comments on the hawks board about wingard. Certainly hasn’t looked like hitting his straps of his AA years.

Hes now played 3 games for 1 quarter........ Im impatient but the bloke is a dual all australian meant to be one of the top talents in the country. Certainly isnt playing like what we are paying for”

“Extremely disappointed/ pissed off with this guys efforts today. Showed no endeavour or want to even try. Serious concerns for whether he really wants it. Was the issue at port
Looked very much like he did at port past two years. Huge concerns!”

“Got to call a spade a spade- Chad was shite today. Started well but had little influence after halftime. Didn't have the confidence/ambition to jump at the footy and was abysmal at centre square stoppages, paying no respect to his opponents. If Wingard wasn't a high profile trade he'd be dropped this week without hesitation.”

Lovely read knowing the frustration those sort of games caused us knowing what he previously had done

Remember he has 6 touches for 3 goals and was proclaimed as the best trade success of the year....

They just ignored the Lynch, Burton and Neale trade....

To be fair, he had an interrupted pre season with his calf issues.
They believe on the Hawks board he will come into his own after a big pre season next year.
The issue is, will he put in the effort required for a big pre season?
If he does, well maybe he can be anything and they have done well.
If he goes back to old habits he could be a disappointment.

I like that his replacements have slipped confidently and comfortably into our team and system and that their attitude and preparation has apparently been of a high standard. So far, so good.

People are to quick to judge, Wingard is a great player, he’ll work his way into form. I’m not sure he’s a Melbourne kid to be honest, it’s a big shorty city, I’m all for being back Chad cheap in 2 years
Yeah, every chance he's back playing in SA before his career is out.

Plenty of tests await our new crop they'll get more attention from opposition and have dips in confidence & form, we are also yet to see how their attitudes change once big coin starts rolling in and they gain bigger profiles/egos.. early days the attitude is nearly always good with draftees.

All fair points but you know the only reason Chad's attitude is being discussed is because it was Port that was being blamed for his drop in form and the common opinion was that Hawthorn would have him back to his best.
The fact that it hasn't all gone to plan is proof positive that Chad is almost completely responsible for his own form. That's the only argument that was ever being made.

People going wayyy too early on the Chad is a bust narrative. He's three games in. Even if he stinks up the whole season, we won't know the outcome of the trade long term.

Traded players often take a while to find their role and learn the structures at their new club. We saw it quite clearly with Rockliff last year, and even Paddy Ryder didn't deliver fully in year one as we learnt the hard way what worked and what didn't in terms of having him in our mix.

In fact, I'm fairly sure S. Burgoyne had a relatively anonymous first season or two with the Hawks. It's one of the things that clubs should consider when trading in players, especially older ones. Wingard, however, has plenty of time on his side, and unless the fanciful predictions of him returning to SA or walking away from the game in 2 years come true, I won't be getting all satisfied that we finally got one back over Hawthorn.

All we can do is be content with our side of the bargain (which is looking good so far) and hopefully enjoy the talent of Wingard as neutral supporters once he gets going.

Tom Rockliff was a bust here 3 games into his first season with us and has settled really well. People writing Wingard off on any board are doing so way too quickly.
I'm not writing him off. I'm saying he'll play exactly the same way he did here.
