Who was alive and watching the VFL in the 70's? Did the game feel over umpired? For the majority of the 70's, the average FF (Free For) per game was in the 40's, before it started to drop to a low of 14.8 in 2004 and now rising at around the 20mark.

I feel the umpires are too involved today (compared to 15-20yrs ago, but how involved were they in the 70's?

Also... can anyone inform how there is a difference in FF and FA? So far this year there has been 1780 FF and 1777 FA... where did the 3 discrepancy come from? Every year by the looks of it has a discrepency, but how?

Was he forced to retire?

He was 35.75 years old when he played his last game and even the umpires stopped giving him votes. They loved him, but his last 4 seasons he polled 2 (2012), 4 (2013), 0 (2014) and 1 vote in 2015.

He may have squeezed one more year out but he was well past peak Goodes when he quit. I have no doubt the taunts made him question going thru the slog of one more preseason, but also what was the contract value Sydney were prepared to give an almost 36 year old?
Yep. Many Sydney fans were bemoaning his selection each week for the last year or two.
