Crowds that cheer a lot also boo a lot - better the booing than universal silence regardless of the game.
For me booing is the right side of the white line that, when crossed, leads to dumb soccer shit like throwing flares and rioting
And Essendon fans were at least booing a poor umpiring display. Over the top booing by the likes of West Coast and Adelaide every home game, when they are on the 'right' side of it is more something to highlight as shit behaviour. As usual with the AFL selective on which things are good and which are bad.
The blanket attributing of motives to everyone is about the worst of it though. Like no one booed Goodes because he made an art of sliding in with the knees first and risking causing a serious injury or deliberately pushed players into others. Both of which Port copped from him. Or some people booed Ablett because he's smashed their side many times and great players tend to cop more boos.
I'm not a boo everything fan. I'm going to wreck my voice at matches through the year, but I'd rather do that yelling out at the umpires or opposition players then booing them. Booing lacks the personal touch a yelled insult does. It's cathartic, even if the eldest will disown me during games due to it.
