That team was only able to beat Tasmania at the 1972 Carnival. This proposed State of Origin team by Mack Binkley in today's Fertilizer would struggle to do any better...

(Bick's must know something about the Tingles recruitment plans re Shane Edwards - oh, and we're getting Rankine!)
Mack Binkley 🤣 (sack Hinkley)

Polec on the wing when he cant get a game for norf..
Crows star Shane Edwards (who?)
40 year old senior burger
Lycett in a forward pocket for some reason, presumably crumbing from full forward pack splitter whole lotta rozee
Is Lachie Neale even from SA?
Dumont and Linc McCarthy on the bench.. fringe players at best

The sad thing is, that team is actually better than recent proposed SA teams due to guys like luko and rozee .

1972 Carnival team?? 1973 was last year SANFL played state games at AO and Blight went to NM in 1974.

Is the bloke with the huge head to the right of Robran, Dean Ottens or Dean Farnham? I always get those 2 mixed up as they were both big bastards from that era.

Pretty sure that's Ottens. He was 6'8 in the old and Farnham was 6'9.

That was gigantic back in the day.

Kerley looks like some kids are on his lawn but he can’t do anything about it.

Terry Moore (2 inwards from Chad & Kane's dad) looks like he could've been the new James Bond; starred in a Benson & Hedges commercial; or been on the run for murdering his kids' nanny.

Who has been drafted from SA since the 2000 draft who has played 150+ games as a KPF?

Jay Schulz (Pick #12, 2002 from Woodville-West Torrens).

And even he almost fell through the cracks at age 24/25, with only a situationally destitute Port Adelaide prepared to offer a burned pie for him at the end of 2009.

The question has to be asked why hasn't SA produced any decent KPF's in the last 20 years or so?? Still producing decent rucks and a few decent KPD's but no decent KPF's.

Guys like Westhoff and Lukosius aren't true KPF's, just talls.

Not enough good food, or is it all relative? Are other states with bigger populations and bigger pools of players, just have more big blokes as a % of elite footballers than SA??

In the 1990's Nick Holland, Warren Tredrea and Matthew Pavlich were drafted from SA.

Who has been drafted from SA since the 2000 draft who has played 150+ games as a KPF?

It's a freaking mystery. You are absolutely correct. There are none of any note, except Schulz as tribey said. I've wondered myself where they are hiding.

At least this attempt doesn’t have Robbie Gray and Zane Kirkwood in it as in years gone by.

Bailey Williams (Western Bulldogs/Glenelg) and Jordan Dawson (Sydney/Sturt) the only glaring omissions. Both having very nice years and the only way is up.

Dunstall, Modra were 188cms, Lockett 191cms and I can go on - Ryan Burton is 192cms and plays half back flank.

Ablett 185cms, Lloyd, Carey and Pavlich 192cms, N. Riewoldt and Lynch 193cms, Tredders and Hall 194cms.

How much is having to run 15 kms a game mean players don't develop the same ways?

Why does Patrick Cripps at 195cms play in the midfield and not CHF like 193cm Jack Riewoldt?

If Georgiades stays at 192cm can he be a true KPF teaming up with Marshall at 198cms this decade?

In the 1986 census, the difference in population between Perth and Adelaide was 30,000, now its 700,000. Rest of the state difference was 40,000 now 200,000.

WA has produced the following KPF's since 2000 draft - Franklin, Kennedy, Darling, Hogan, Quentin Lynch and Cam McCarthy has looked capable of being a KPF of quality but been derailed by off field issues.

Has the gene pool changed between the 2 states?

Ottens was pretty mobile for his size had a fair mark and kick on him also but not as good as Leon Milde👍
That photo made me go and check who was in the squad for that 1972 carnival.

Interesting to see there were 5 players from Sturt and 4 from Glenelg, two teams that missed the finals that year.

Just 3 players each from North and Port, who were the grand finalists - the same number of reps as West Adelaide, the wooden spooners. Only 2 players each from Centrals and Norwood, who were the other finalists that year.

With those selections, it's no wonder they performed so poorly in Perth.

Franklin is a true champion of all time, and Kennedy is an excellent player of his time.

The rest?

Darling is good Tex Walker. Hogan is turning out to be a bit of a bust that peaked early. Lynch was a good role player in a great team ala Cam Mooney, and McCarthy was also a young talent that never eventuated.

I mean it's more than SA obviously but it's hardly churning out HOF key forward material.

Did they do the usual thing and pick 6 centre men in the squad?

Sturt players would have been picked on reputation and past state games given they were premiers 1966-1970 and 4th in 1971. Kerls would have pushed the Glenelg players given he was their coach.

Look at the 20-30 years before 2000 and WA and SA would have been similar. That's the point. SA has 1 vs 4 or maybe 5 and the first 4 played in flags and played their part in those flags and sustained success.

That's 1 every 20 years vs 1 every 4 or 5 years if you do a simple average. Something fundamentally has changed.

Yes, they weren't all listed as centremen but there were about six of them who could/did play in that position.

Agree with your comments about Sturt and Glenelg players. No surprise to see a Glenelg coach filling a state team with Glenelg hacks - a forerunner of what would happen 20 years later with that new "state" team.

Hard to see the glenelg players as hacks. All played over 200 SANFL games. Brian Colby was All Oz player in 1969 carnival, Fred Phillis was SANFL leading goal kicker 1969-71 seasons, Marker was a great centreman and played about 18 state games, and Cornes was a proven state player. Bias maybe, but a few others in that squad get put into the hack category before those 4.

Despite the fact that ted obviously shouldn't be anywhere near a footy field these days, he averages more kicks, disposals, marks, goals and behinds over his career than Darling.

I get that we like to poo on old ted, but it's better when we can at least be factually correct, like the powerstance or his performances over the past 2 years.

This is where stats are misleading though he never crashed packs or took big contested marks in his brief prime old Ted, I'm not saying he didn't have a couple of good years but there's reasons why even Darling has had an AA nod while this guys biggest achievement is 2x AFLPA Captain of the year lottery winner.
