AFL clubs are “really struggling” to come to terms with the new man-on-the-mark rule for 2021, which could have a dramatic impact on scoring and open up matches.

The new rule will see umpires tell players manning the mark to “stand”, after which they aren’t allowed to move from their position, nor be replaced by a teammate.

AFL footy operations boss Steve Hocking has said he wants to see “greater flow” in matches. The rule should hurt the ability of defenders to force players to kick out wide, rather than through the corridor, and therefore enable faster ball movement.

At least they are paying holding the ball for players throwing the ball out in a tackle now.

From that video the player taking the kick moves off his line before the player on the mark moves so really it should be play on as the first call. Obviously the umpire is just watching the man on the mark though so they get to call the new and exciting rule.

It's such a stupid rule in every sense.
Unlikely to make any positive impact on the style of football
Difficult to enforce
Penalty is massively excessive for infringing

The only hope is that AFL coaches are much smarter than the AFL executive team and will have worked out a way to fully negate the rule by round 4

I would just be marking kicks sideways and backwards all day until you frustrate an opposition player into giving away a 50.

The rule is stupid but I won't be angry at Steve Hocking and co. when our players inevitably give away 50s for breaching it, I'll be angry at them for being dumb. It's a stupid rule but it's not that hard to follow.

I disagree because it goes against natural instincts that have become ingrained due to the same behaviour these guys have had for their entire football career including juniors. A lot of that movement on the mark is just something that happens autonomously. To expect them to change that on a whim is ridiculous.

What the vast majority of AFL fans want to see is steve hocking ******* off.

If he actually cared about what the fans want he would do just that.

Teams that defensively chip around and dont try to be aggressive at all.

Literally as posted above thats how you dominate now.

Why would you ever kick the ball forward to a marking contest when you can just wait for an opponent to take a step in the wrong direction then risk free walk the ball forwards 50 metres?

You can't compare how the AFL treated an indigenous Ports' player with the way good white blokes from Hawthorn were treated.

hawks players could have myrdered someone 1 week.

I still rate where a player runs inside the protected 10 metre zone and is clearly just trying to get back into a defensive position, getting pinged a 50 metre penalty as the worst rule.
