That’s why.

Okay, I'll rephrase. Why does anybody other than the club involved care if footballers want to smoke weed? As a supporter of an opposition club, I don't want WADA checking in to make sure Willie Rioli isn't smoking weed, I want Willie to smoke as much weed as he likes.

If the Eagles want to punish him for it to discourage him and other players, that makes sense. But it shouldn't be anything to do with the AFL and it definitely shouldn't be anything to do with WADA.

Just a thought,

If you were punting on the eagles winning and Willie kicking a few goals and he was off his head you’d care.

As with just about everything in our sport it comes back to protecting the integrity of punting. I ****ing hate Nathan Brown and Daisy Thomas and every single campaigner associated with gambling advertising.

You’re right that that would come up as a justification, but Willie Rioli smoking weed before a game is the same as Ollie Wines waterskiing in the pre-season. It’s a problem for the club and supporters but no one else’s business.

Yeah I don’t give a **** what drugs he takes (except enhancers obviously) just trying to look through the eyes of the AwFuL.

Well it is illegal, and it brings the game & the AFL into disrepute, so its understandable that the AFL will get involved in ensuring the club handles the matter accordingly. Look how they stuck their big fat noses into SPP's nightclub saga. Now that was beyond ridiculous IMO.

As for WADA ... WADA's arguments for including cannabis as a banned substance are
1] does it enhance performance?
2] is it dangerous for the athlete? and
3] is it against the spirit of good sport?

According to WADA cannabis violates at least two and probably all three of all these conditions. Firstly, cannabis contravenes the spirit of sport, which it describes as "a celebration of the human spirit, body and mind, characterised by values including health, respect for the rules and laws, and respect for self and other participants". So that is pretty self-explanatory.

Secondly, cannabis violates the Code in that its use represents a very real health risk to the athlete. While there may be debate about just how harmful cannabis is, there is no disputing the fact that it is harmful. It causes temporary - and perhaps even permanent - loss of brain function, wreaks havoc on the respiratory tract, and its smoke contains known carcinogens.

There is also some argument regarding cannabis also being performance enhancing in that it calms the nerves before competition, and some athletes have said they use it to ensure they get enough sleep to compete well.

Edit...
PS: Before you come at me, the above info on cannabis is taken from information provided by WADA. It might or might not reflect my personal views.

Using that logic, having a warm cup of milk before bed us performance enhancing.

I can't believe I'm bringing up this old trope, but alcohol isn't banned, yet the arguments fit that too.
Cannabis isn't even illegal in many places, whereas alcohol is.

I did add an addendum to the post...

As it is, my personal view is that if you choose to smoke cannabis, you are a dickhead. If you then deny its harmful effect you are an idiot dickhead! And if you are an elite sportsperson and choose to do it, you are doubly so!

lol you can tell the stoners in this forum just by reading the last couple of pages.

I don't smoke it. It doesn't agree with me.

I do have a pro-cannabis stance though, for a myriad of reasons, some of which were in Tibbs' post.

The demonising of it as some kind of danger drug is so out of whack with reality.

I have a strong personal view on it ... having lost a young man that I loved dearly ... started off with cannabis at 14, found on a Melbourne street at 17, OD'ed on heroin.

That's very sad and I empathise with you. I've got similar stories of friends and relatives over the years. Blaming cannabis is misguided though, IMO.

Yes, I am the same. I don't do it, but I have no issues with others doing it.

I am def not against it medicinally, I actually think Cannabinoids are a medicine of the future, but as a recreational drug? The incidences of psychotic mental health issues linked to it are just too great. In the case of my young nephew he began to have episodes of severe psychosis within 6 months of starting on it. Not an isolated case either.

Sorry, dont mean to derail a footy thread, but I recon this will mark the end for Rioli. Will be hard for the club to back him.

My ADHD-type works as if I am naturally stoned. I can’t smoke cannabis. I did it once. It turns me into an useless piece of meat.

I take medicine daily to “unstone”. I don’t understand why people want to turn into me, but ok. People do weird choices. Maybe there are some who are the opposite of me, and it helps. I don’t know.
