.... IIRC the SA Footy Commission helped tell the SANFL clubs what a stupid idea it would be to remove a Magpie presence from the SANFL .... We were being blamed for negotiating to ensure the continuation of some sort of Magpie entity in the face of conflicting requirements from the other parties ...
I clearly remember Bucky Cunningham on a radio interview saying the intention was we just moved holus bolus into the AFL, no SANFL presence anymore. For a long time I thought that referred to the 1997 transition. But I reckon I got the wrong end of the stick and that must have been when we thought we were getting in for 1991. A rolling mess ever since, we probably have the best situation now. The 1998 and 99 SANFL flags were great fun but perversely didn't help things.

... I don't know what the economics of us playing in the NEAFL or an AFL reserves comp would be ....
The thing is we all do sort of know what the economics of playing an AFL reserves team outside of Adelaide are, freaking forbidding. And, broad statement, I don't think any other AFL club wants it. So long as the competition is strong enough to help AFL-listed players develop it's much easier to organise as it is and it's a gazillion percent cheaper. Separately I have no doubt the NSWAFL, NEAFL, WAFL, and VFL place restrictions on the AFL reserves teams that already play in them just like the SANFL.

I believe the change happened in the early 70s and although you said you don't care I think the original went something like
We are Port Adelaide
We are the team
We can't be beaten
That's easy seen
At the end of the season
You'll know the reason
We are the premiership team

We're a mighty bunch of fellas
And every one's a star
If we're not at the footy
You'll find us at the bar
So come along and join us
You'll find that we're alright
And you can be a member
Of the mighty black and white

A variation of it was still in use at Reynella when I played there as a yoof a few decades ago

The original Maggie's song had a verse in it ` we have beaten the best in Australia, ' which I assume was a reference to being the unbeaten champions of Australia in 1914.

Port played regular trial matches against South Melbourne and Melbourne from about 1968 to 1973, 1 year we would play 1 club at Alberton and the other in Melbourne, and the next year switch it around.
I'm fairly certain the change to the South song gets a mention in Bob Maclean's 100 years of the Magpies, and it was Big Bob who instigated the change, after he heard the South Melbourne players singing it.

Interesting poll on the main board. Who is the better player: Heeney or Bontempelli?

Bont by a long way IMO. Heeney is becoming a bit overrated. He's more upside than output at this point.

Completely disagree. Heeney is outrageously good and plays far beyond his years. Has been one of their best this finals series and really, what more can you ask from a 19 year old?

It logically had to be from before the Escort Cup began in 1979, when the VFL began a formal, sponsored pre-season (which we now accept as the norm). With no authority on this at all I'll say senior Aussie Rules clubs just sent carrier pigeons or telegrams around Oz seeking to set up pre-season friendlies which probably barely rated a mention in the papers. I was told it was from the 1960s after one of these matches/series we adopted South Melbourne's song and was told it was at their invitation. And of course we just tweaked a few words. I've never heard any other song sung, I don't know what went before and am not at all curious - it has never mattered to me.

I can't recall our previous song (was it "Magpies to win"?) but I distinctly recall in the early 70's the club used to roll out the lyrics to "Cheer Cheer the B & the W" on something like 6' x 3' roller blinds so the faithful upstairs could learn the words and sing along. That would've been around '71, '72 with due allowance for the fact I would've been around 6-7 at the time and my memories from that era are fuzzy at best. Any other posters here old enough to have been there at the time and recall that?

I should've kept reading before I replied to Powerstufff's post so I might not have added much to your post '54. Well done on the lyrics. Now if we could only hear the tune...

Pretty sure the club song was changed after the 1971 season. The story went that the players came into the rooms after beating Centrals and half the players didn't know the words to the old club song so a rousing rendition in victory was out of the question. Big Bob was furious and decided that it was time for a new song that all players and supporters would know and chose South Melbourne's as has been discussed.

It's not often that I vehemently disagree with one of your football related posts. I'd take Bont over Heeney at the moment but only just. Heeney's been sensational in recent weeks, is developing the ability to play anywhere, is tough, reliable, great hands, a match winner. I can see Dan Hannebery written all over him in terms of composure, presence and ability to have an out at all times. Star.

However it happened I'm glad you posted, that roller blind thing is a great story and it's the sort of thing people don't otherwise talk about because they mistakenly don't think it's interesting.

This still amazes me, was just watching the original PAFC bid video for the AFL:

31 premierships
34 runners up
24 thirds

Missed finals on only 12 occasions.

This is the very definition of sustained success.

I reckon the roller blind was still in use right up until the club was redeveloped in preparation for entry into the afl. Someone out there must still have it in their shed - a Dads Army veteran maybe

the roller blind was definitely still around upstairs for at least some of the 1988-1990 era. I don't remember enough about the evenings of 1992 or 1994-1996 to confirm anything about anything ;)

Still the Wineflies song. Is funny listening to my sons (under 10) team singing 'You'll find us at the bar' line.

THE SPORTING world is mourning the shock death of Max Walker – the last man to play AFL/VFL football and Test cricket in the same calendar year.

Tasmanian-born Walker, who played 85 games for Melbourne as a ruckman and key defender from 1967-72 before taking 138 Test wickets in 34 Tests, has died at 68 after a two-year battle with cancer.

Have look over here. :)

The prosecution agreed to this over a month ago so, as you say, not a surprise. Today's hearing was just a formality.

Cy Walsh: Prosecution indicates consent over mental incompetence defence

I'm thankful that this has at least spared Meredith and Quinn the pain of a trial.

I am too but my lasting memory of this was the Camries saying the trial would affect them during the finals. This was after the banana thing too so my hatred increased for them increased to 20.

Still, the result sucks because it can open a very big can of worms for similar cases where people can get off for rape or murder because of drugs.
