Exactly. If they even consider awarding extra medals, they will open a can of worms. Sorry Bevo, you might be flavour of the month but if changes are made, it can only be going forward from next year. Anyway, I'm sure Murphy will return the medal after all the celebrations are over.
Cam Mooney agrees with you.

If they want to be fair, then every player that played a certain number of games during the year should get a medal. Makes sense.
I agree somewhat. However, I will throw this out there for the players who missed out on their medals.

At the end of the season, the final 8 for each club would select 35 players to select their best 22 from for each week. These 35 players who are selected are entitled to a Premiership Medal, whether they played or not in a finals series.

Players like Modra, Alir Alir etc..... I am sure that there are plenty more hard luck stories like these.

Everyone on the list should get one. It's easy for mine. It takes a whole club to get it done.

There will be still be the clear delineation of a 'premiership player' vs a 'premiership medal owner'.

If the AFL gives Beveridge a medal I will puke.

There has to be a line drawn for those who get a medal and those who don't.
Perhaps there's something in the 'finals squad' idea but to me this doesn't resolve the issue with Bob Murphy.

It's actually starting to piss me off. You'd think that Bulldogs are the first premiers to have key players miss out on playing.

Maybe I am in the minority, but my two bob's worth ;) is I believe people are being a little mean spirited in bagging Bevo's gesture to give his premiership medal to Bob Murphy.

There is no correlation re Choco not doing the same thing for Matty Primus, Port had been in the comp for about 5 minutes when we won our flag, and I suspect the parents of many posters on this site were either of kindergarten age when the Bullies won their last ( and first flag ), or were still only a twinkle in someone's eye.

Edit
Suspended captain Russell Johnson was invited ( and took part ) in the Maggie players' premiership lap of footy park after the 1990 grand final.

I don't care where they draw the line but it must be consistent for all clubs and not just "reward St Bevo" if he chose to give up his medal then sobeit. I actually don't care if the whole squad get a medal but then it will have to be done in retrospect too. I think the key here is consistency and not just the "good bloke" argument.

Johnston definitely played in the 1990 GF, but I think he got injured early in the game and David Hynes stepped up. You may be thinking of 1988.

Murphy's medal would be worth bugger all to the guys at the Las Vegas pawn shop, and that's main thing here.

"Yeeeeeaaaaaah, I understand it's a premiership medal, but Murphy didn't actually play in the game which brings the value down a lot. Had this come from a guy who played in the Grand Final we'd be talking serious bucks".
Rick: 'Just to be sure, I have a buddy who is an expert in everything AFL. I will try to get him down here'.

Damien Barrett enters the store.

Damien: 'IF this were awarded to an actual premiership player, THEN it would be more valuable'.

Rick: 'Yes, we knew that already'.

Damien: 'That is simply not true, Rick. My sources are telling me different'.

Yeah I would say the line is being on an AFL list.
So just on a list or played a game in the premiership year?

Counter argument for such a low bar - Troy Chaplin would have a 2004 medal

I'd put it at played at least 10 games that year OR was injured and had played at least 50 games for the club prior to the GF. Do the likes of Primus and Francois would have gotten medals as contributors over getting to a top club, but not blow ins like Airoplane Chappy.

This Murphy situation is beyond a bad joke.

I wouldn't be opposed to players playing a third of the season's games getting a medal. That shows some meaningful contribution on the field in that year. Obviously our two of Primus and Francou still miss out. That is sport and that is life.

Which of our players would have qualified for a medal in 2004 under this?
