Collingwood could be 0-8 and Eddie would still back him to the hills.

I know there will be differing views by which supporters look for different strengths, but Austin was very solid on Saturday. Last week against Norwood, he was also quite good. He didn't play AFL early because his preseason was interupted and he needed more game fitness but I wouldn't hesitate to pick him now
He really wasn't. He literally did nothing all night. ;)

The GWS key forwards destroyed our defenders. Gave them an absolute bath.

You still need to win contests. Our good general defenders couldn't match the GWS bigs in the contest and they killed us.

If you think that's just a midfield issue, exhibit B will be the 2014 Essendon game.

You're right about defenders needing to have many strings to their bow. You're wrong about height being basically irrelevant.
It's unrealistic to think that the midfield can stop absolutely every forward thrust, especially against a quality team like the Giants. At some point they will get inside 50 and if their KPFs have half a foot on the defenders around them, well, no prizes for predicting the impending aerial assualt.

I was at Manuka and watched mismatches forming all day but in the last quarter Lobb line up on a seemingly random combination of DBJ, Pittard and Polec.

It was moronic and we got what we deserved and it happened right in front of me.

Buckley took a route which Malthouse has demonstrated he was never interested in. He's trying to overhaul the culture of the group and club. He could have kept everyone together and they would have won him more games but instead he's weeding out bad seeds and setting higher standards not just for football but for being a good person. He should always be respected for that.

Unfortunately good blokes don't win flags, unless they play for Hawthorn and the concept of good blokes has been bastardised beyond salvage.

Off topic but how would I get a ticket to the Port Geelong game and sit with fellow Port supporters. I'm going to be in the area and will be heading down and don't particularly fancy sitting by myself in a bunch of Geelong supporters.

NUFC, YES.
I think he did for a year at Norf, then Eddie got scared and snapped him back up.

Nah, he's persona non grata at North. He retired in 2007, did a couple of years in the media and then became one of Mick's lieutenants.

It's weird, everyone knows they should get out and avoid the fate that befell Tony Shaw, who was a club legend and was similarly anointed as a coach-in-waiting before crashing and burning in an attempt to fulfil that destiny, but jeez.

Primus? Retired > Assistant at Port > Flame out.

Voss? Retired > was supposed to be assistant at WCE but Lethal prematurely retired > Flame out.

Hird? No apprenticeship at all > Flame out of all flame outs.

Contrast to say, Mark Williams, who became a senior coach at Glenelg of all places before becoming Sheedy's right-hand man before finally returning to Alberton under Jack for the Power era. WCE legend John Worsfold also did a stint with Carlton before coming home, etc.

You look at Collingwood's 2010 premiership team and think what might have been. In the space of a few short years ...

1) Dale Thomas wrecks his foot and is never the same player.

2) Dayne Beams heads back to Brisbane for personal reasons.

3) Travis Cloke goes from star to plodder virtually overnight for no apparent reason.

4) Heath Shaw traded to GWS for no apparent reason.

1) and 2) are none of Buckley's doing, 3) is some of Buckley's doing, 4) is entirely Buckley's doing. But all up, that's 4 genuine A graders from all over the park lost way earlier than anyone could have expected.

• Ben Reid and Nathan Brown were superb young key defenders who also got whacked with the injury stick.

• Luke Ball was a revelation and then blew out his knee.

• Alan Didak did a Ryan O'Keefe and went from elite midfielder to finished in the blink of an eye.

• Sherrod Wellingham looked an absolute steal and played some great footy before falling away and getting traded home.

• Harry Lumumba went loco.

• Leon Davis made two AA teams with some utterly sensational footy and promptly decided to retire with a lucrative new deal on the table.

• Solid roleplayers in Tyson Goldsack, Alan Toovey and Brent Macaffer, those really invaluable types who aren't flash but are ultrareliable, all did knees.

• Jamie Elliott was arguably the most exciting young small forward in the comp along with Wingard and his back is cooked at age 24.

• Lachie Keefe and Josh Thomas copped WADA bans for taking the wrong pills.

• Matthew Scharenberg, highly-rated youngster taken with pick 6 in the 2013 draft blew out a knee early on and barely played. Did it for a second time not long after.

A lot of it's been self-inflicted but goodness me they've copped something of a curse.

If you're a member the recent e-mail allowed you to get tickets in away-game supporter areas, If you're not a member contact the club and they can put you in touch with the cheersquad who sell tickets and/or bus rides..

I remember listening to trade radio and apparently he wanted an extra 50k on his deal.
He was determined to move home to WA or his partner's state of SA but none of those clubs could meet his demands, apparently. Still desperately unlucky for the Pies, regardless.

Marty Clarke was another one. Really nice Irish recruit, looked to be building up to a 10-year career. Decided to go back home for a few years and when he came back he wasn't half the player.

Buckley had the best resourced club so he doesn't get the Primus excuse, but man that list tribey put up is grim. I have never seen it put like that before.

I feel for Buckley because to me he's always been unfairly targeted by opposition supporters his whole career. Particularly the irony stuff about him moving away from Brisbane to win a flag, as if he could have seen that club turning into the Frankenstein Monster it was, and as if he didn't single handedly do his best to carry a team to a flag.

He's the consummate professional and he's really articulate and never did dumb footy player shit off the field AFAIK. I hope after his inevitable sacking he joins the media because I enjoy listening to him and he seems like a nice person who isn't totally involved in the circle jerking boys club of the AFL world.

He has to have had one of the worst of hands dealt to him & can still be cool, well most of the time. tribey 's list is stunning, & like you hadn't totally pieced it together so thoroughly.

Humble brag time, Bucks & I have had the same girlfriend years ago.
Naturally, I was with her before him.

Like the tism stung, but much more direct and with a better player?

This is one of several reasons we should get Buckley here if Voss gets the Collingwood job.

He would be an outstanding foil for Ken.

Its one way to look at it, the other is that its just their turn for the downward spiral. They had their run from 07-12 and their results say they are just on the back end of that bell curve now

What a lovely chap.

Unfortunately, his job is to win games of footy and hes failing miserably.
