I don't see where the law covers a kick to the face. You're allowed to raise a knee in a marking contest in order to protect yourself but Greene was actively kicking away in an attempt to push Dahlhaus off, and copped him high. Don't be surprised if it comes in as higher than low impact; it was a fair whack and there's a reasonable probability of an underlying fracture.
It wasn't a kick to the face, it was a lift/protection that made contact with the face.
It will be explained away as careless contact to the head, but as others have identified, it happens plenty from behind with a speccy, it would have also been seen as fine if it hit him in the chest.

The AFL have let players get away with raising their boots in contests forever.
So they have two options here, make it Greenes fault, or make it their fault and come out with a new ruling that you just aren't allowed to do it.

I know which one I am banking on.

True, but he got him high and hence there will be consequences.

I do think it went beyond lifting his leg to protect himself though. I'd have no issue if he lifted his leg/knee and held it still to protect himself but he clearly attempted to push Dahlhaus off with his foot and extended his leg. And marking contests do have a different rule for them.

To put it into context, if this in fact legal why wouldn't we utilise this at nearly every stoppage? Wines jumping to grab a tap for Ryder and kicking the opposition away would be a pretty effective strategy.

To me it looked vicious. He meant to hurt his face.

Dahlhaus' fault for not being a few inches taller tbh. Wouldn't even be a problem if he wasn't so vertically challenged.

Imagine if Toby Greene did this to Wingard pretty sure the responses in here would be very different

Either nothing will come of this or he will get 5-6 weeks there's no in between

Of course they would our supporters are rabid dogs when it come to wingard, they wanted frost to miss weeks for a completely legal smother. They'd want people to miss games for getting too close to him.

This looks to come into one of those "did he have another option" category and yes he did. Although he was in the air he could have handballed straight away or even knocked the ball on. He did look to have a glance at Dahlhaus before sticking his foot out which will not do him any good. Also he was reported on the field and has a poor record. Whether the AFL will bring up their "the head is sacrosant" line is questionable as their was no driving tackle but again that will be something that can do him no favors.

All I can say is suck shit Dahlhaus, you weren't even looking at the ball, you were looking at Greene even though the ball was in dispute and you got what you deserved. If you had gone up for the the ball like Greene was expecting you to instead of waiting down on the ground for the tackle, you would have never got injured.

There was a Maggie player in the 70's named Noel Stuart, he only played a handful of games, but he used to regularly raise his leg and make contact ( usually to the chest ) when opponents approached him from front on in a marking contest.
Even way back then it was a free kick every time, but I can't recall if he was ever reported for it.

He was clearly going to be second to the ball and was about to tackle. He was entitled to watch the player.

Agreed, but in this situation we are neutrals and able to see it from that perspective.

I reckon Greene exploited it a bit. From the camera shot behind Greene it looked like he did a bit of a kick out just before contact is made. Sure you do it to protect yourself but it can also be a great disguise to strike a player. He disguised it enough.

My thoughts exactly.

It's hard to see the AFL legislating against it and if they do there will be players running head first in to a boot to draw a free or get a player suspended.
