It's literally the first thing you get taught when you learn to play football.
True, but there is absolutely no "duty of care" to actually protect yourself on the footy field - think of Nick Riewoldts mark or Jonathon Browns multiple smashed faces from "fearlessly" going into a contest.
There is nothing in the rules that says you need to be careful going into a contest so that you dont hurt yourself... BUT, there IS a rule stating that you have a duty of care towards the other players in the contest - and if you hit a player high it is likely to be "careless" and you will likely be suspended as a result.

About three weeks ago I traded Ronke out as steak knives in a Supercoach keeper league I’m part of. At that stage he was some rando rookie lister who’d never played an AFL game. I am mad.
You know who else is mad?

The guy im up against in DT this week who has him on the bench and not even an emergency - would have been a unique.

Should have turned his body like Parker did

You have a duty to protect your own god damn body.
I grew up watching footy in the 90’s and the first thing I noticed was that anytime players clashed it was with their sides

Literally minutes after they started rewarding people who went into contests head first with free kicks players suddenly forget how to protect themselves in contests. They’ve drilled it out of them.

The rules to protect the head have done the exact opposite.

This whole 'decent game on a Friday Night' thing is such a weird feeling.
Decent game as in two highly ranked, roughly equal quality teams playing in a tight contest.

Not decent as in the standard of the game of football. Seriously, something has to be done. Nearly every game these days is atrocious to watch. Just a shit show of fumbling and poor kicking and crowded forward lines and rolling mauls where the game is won and lost by whoever can jag the most fluke goals out of the pack/goals from free kicks directly in front/walk on goals from the goal square.

If I'd never seen the game before this year, I'd think it was the worst sport ever invented.

If you don't like the style of footy, write letters to the clubs and coaches.

Like complaining to the government that people sell their houses for too much and people keep buying them for too much.

I reckon you could find an AFL article calling Toumpas a star if you looked hard enough.. Impey's kicking looks sharper but I haven't watched him close enough really I might just be seeing the good although players skills improving once they leave Port would seem about right.

Clarko post-game in a 21-21 free kick game says that Sydney's defenders got away with 'blue murder' and points out two decisions that could have led to a different outcome. Doesn't cross any lines, just leaves it out there that if you make mistakes against Hawthorn they will be called out. It's an artform which I'd say is quite possibly a large part of why #freekickhawthorn exists.

Did you watch the game? Hawthorn were clinical in patches, the swans played tough uncompromising contested football.

It was a contrast of two styles of football and I very much enjoyed the spectacle. I thought the skills on display were spectacular.

Clarkson pulled the same bullshit against us the week before we played them one year talking about how we 'block better than anyone'. This was the Ebert coughing up blood game. Sure enough, the umpires started to look for it and call it more because Clarkson mentioned it, which enabled his players to do it more.

The problem is that you've gotta have the cachet of 3 premierships in a row to do that shit.
