Oh yeah, we played that shit at Hindmarsh and United's owner/general manager shit himself over not being informed about it.

Good times.

Well at least there was one positive.

I assume the change will have to involve penalising teams that don't reset quick enough after a goal (30 seconds to match ad breaks probably). So it's assumed if forwards are always in defense and having to run back, by later in the game they'll be stuffed and not able to do that (or play that well in general). Especially if this is combined with reduced interchanges, it should force coaches to leave forwards, if not in the forward 50, instructed not to flood defenses as much.

At least that's the aim. We'll see how it goes in practise. I think it will make the lumbering talls even more out of place.

In an ideal world this works perfectly

In our world they always find a way to adjust

I’m afraid they simply phase out the big marking targets and select athletes that can simply run up the field and back for starting positions all day long but aren’t very good at football.

Then we get more stoppages because they can’t execute skills and they think of another rule change

In league a similar occurrence i the setting of a scrum to stop the clock. It resulted in backs packing down and eventually the total demise of the scrum as an art.

One rule change I'd be happy to see return is the instantaneous holding the ball, for players that have had CLEAR prior.

Ie. Player runs for a few bounces and then is tackled.

This used to be holding the ball instantly, but for some reason we have changed to give the player time to dispose of the ball. For me this is not needed, and all it does is enhance this scrappy play style, encouraging players to take on the game and just handball if they get in trouble, which has basically been the model for ball movement that Richmond and the Dogs have used over the last few years.

No. We want to see players taking the game on. An interpretation like this would see the Powell-Pepper dont-argue become obsolete. No thanks.

West Perth placed under administration earlier in the week, now the WAFL's most successful club has hit rock bottom...

No bites for Sharks league coaching job

East Fremantle have failed to attract any coaching applicants despite the WAFL’s most successful club advertising for Rob Wiley’s replacement for the past two weeks.

Wiley has four games left at the helm of the Sharks, who are almost certain to finish last for just the fourth time in their 120-year history. They are three wins behind eighth-placed Swan Districts, who they host at East Fremantle Oval tomorrow.

President Mark Stewart confirmed that no one had applied to replace Wiley but said he was confident the club eventually would find a quality candidate.

“We have advertised the role but we haven’t had anyone apply yet,” Stewart said. “At the end of the day we can only look at the candidates who apply.”

Thanks for the info mate, but I probably care less about the plight of WAFL clubs than I do of the SANFL... probably.

I agree in general but knowing that it's a bad idea to change the rules/sport midseason for certain teams in a massive, national competition should be obvious to anybody over the age of about 3... You shouldn't need feedback to come to that conclusion if you aren't a complete moron

Edit: just understood the reference you were making haha

Grant Thomas has written a piece suggesting prior opportunity is done away with entirely. His thoughts re what the game would look like in that scenario are quite thought provoking.

I imagine a ring of players hovering around a stationary ball knowing if they pick it up they're essentially giving the oppo a free kick
It's not too far removed from what is happening now. Being first to the ball is no longer the prime goal as a player.

The spirit of football has always been about the contest

The forward is allowed to make a contest

The defender is allowed to make and contest and so on. The ruck contest has been affected already by these interfering twats

What used to be 2 guys competing to win the ball has evolved into the cluster**** that was the Dangerfield free kick when he nominated in the ruck from 10 metres away in the midfield.

I actually applaud him for acknowledging when something wont work, acknowledging the mounting body of evidence of failure and change his plan ... I wish someone else would do that.

I would too but that's not what Gill is doing here.

hes now wrong on 2 fronts and comes off as a weak spineless politician rather than a leader IMO.

its this part of the article that got to me. "after concerns about the integrity of the game were raised- even though he disagrees with them"

so 1 he still doesn't think the comp integrity is damaged by playing different rules, 2 - hes changed his mind because it's unpopular.
good leaders at least have the courage of their convictions, they can change their mind sure. but the quote above and in the article shows
he hasn't changed his mind, popular option is just against him

which is actually the best way to sum up Gil's reign so far. canvas all parties then go with the flow. way to lead from behind Gil

If Gillon wants to improve the look of the game then he should get rid of the rule that allows Patrick Dangerfield, with no intention of winning the ball at all to run into Angus Brayshaw while waving his arms to draw a free kick. He might as well have shouted "Look at moy, look at moy" like Kim from 'Kath and Kim'.
