I've kept mulling over this nice little tidbit. What do you think this says about Freo? That they think their premiership window is basically closed if they can't beat us at their home in round 1?
Probably, Freo want to get off to a good start in 2015 prove they are still good enough and need to beat PA to get some momentum going early.

Fremantle will still be around the mark simply because they will remain very, very difficult to beat at home regardless of the opposition. Is there enough improvement in them to be able to seriously challenge Hawthorn, Sydney, Port, North, etc, away from home? Doubt it. Will probably run 5th or 6th.

So the first top up players for Essendon are Mitch Brown, Jared Petrenko, Clint Jones and James Magner and Mitch Clisby.

I now wait with anticipation for Dodoro to try and demand first round compensation picks for them all when they are sent back to the state leagues.
Better players than half their list.

It definitely puts a big emphasis on us winning in round 1 to send a message that we are ready to go. You never know how much round 1 games matter. Our round 1 last year was that scrappy piece of shit match against Carlton if I recall. We looked okay - but nothing like the side we built ourselves up to by the end of the season. Who knows how different it would have been if we let that one slide.

The good thing is, it's a real tough match to start the season and a good test to see where we are at coming off all the pre-season work. I like the idea of starting the season against quality opposition such as Freo and Sydney.

How can that be called Essendon? It's a mockery of the competition.

The scoreboard should read 'A bunch of guys in Essendon guernseys'.

Mitch Brown? So that must be either:
-the nondescript West Coast key forward and/or key back who has been around forever and/or may or may not have been delisted already
-the nondescript Geelong key forward and/or key back who has been around forever and/or may or may not have been delisted already*
-other forgettable Mitch Browns

I kept thinking maybe the guy was traded to Geelong when I was watching them, and when I was watching West Coast I thought Geelong traded him there.

Obviously I forgot this thought between matches.

Is there any chance that this storm in a tea cup about Essendon approaching SANFL clubs for top up players could erode goodwill between the AFL-SANFL and the negotiations around the AO deal, and delay it further?

The SANFL seem to be a vindictive lot!!

If the SANFL think they can make some coin out of it they won't give two shits about their clubs or the integrity issues of the matter.

Had a bit of a lol at this statement from the one goalers: http://www.nafc.com.au/newsevents?target=latestnews

"We have been strong in our view that we are against this whole process, and that all SANFL clubs should be protected from such an invasion. We do not support the coercion of players from their clubs where they have been part of a long summer campaign and fill vital roles just to have them taken without notice. Mitch is aware of our views and position on it and understands it."

Nek minnit...

"Of course, if he goes, we would look forward to having him back as soon as possible, and firing up ready for our season opener."
