The umpires confirmed how underrated Trent Cotchin's season was.
He was well down this year compared to last year and most Richmond supporters would agree with this. It goes to show the umpires do have their pets. See Swallow as well.

Yeah, hence 19 votes to 25? His down year was still a great year.
He did not deserve 19 votes when you compare his year to someone like Martin's who was far and away Richmond's most consistent player this year.

I am not knocking the guy as I would love to have him in our team but he did not have a great year. He struggled because he was carrying a knee injury for part of the season.

Cotchin was nowhere near as damaging as last year, playing on one leg for half the year, yet still racked up the votes. Like Dangerfield you can definitely see them winning one soon. They have the knack of turning what should be 0 or 1 vote games into 2s and 3s.

He had more "down" games, but his good games were fantastic. He started the year on absolute fire and was leading the count after Round 3 - deservedly so. So that's 11 votes from the remaining 19 rounds - which seems about what he deserved. People just forget his electric start. He deserved 19 votes.

I'd hate to be a player in a 'brownlow' window right now.

GAJ doesn't even look like slowing down and when the Suns start to flex their muscle he's going to be very hard to beat for the next few years.

The bald head helps too.

Cotchin's vote

Rd 1 3 votes - 33 disposals Win beat Carlt
Rd 2 2 votes - 31 disposals Win beat St K
Rd 3 3 votes - 36 disposals Win beat WB

Rd 14 3 votes - 24 disposals Win beat St K

Rd 17 2 votes - 34 disposals Win beat Freo
Rd 19 3 votes - 34 disposals Win beat Hawks
Rd 20 3 votes - 30 disposals Win beat Brisbane

So there is 16 of Cotchin's 19 votes all in games where Richmond won and he got the ball 30 times. He had a brlistering start and IMO was BOG in the Freo and Hawks game. I didn't see the Brisbane game. The St Kilda game looks a bit iffy but I didn't see that game and looking at the stats nobody on the ground had more than 25 disosals. He tends to have a 2:1 kick to handball ratio so that helps attract the umpires attention.

He got the ball 29 times against Brisbane Rd 16, Essendon Rd 23 for wins and 30 times against Sydney rd 18 for a loss and got zero votes.

Can suck it!
Didn't rate Cotchin's year, even pre knee injury, he was content padding stats in the back pocket rather than working hard forward which was the hallmark of his 2012 for mine. He'll be a seriously good player no doubt but this was a down year.

Quirks of the Brownlow voting. Even Tex Walker tweeted his horror at Lynch not getting the 3 votes for his 10 goal haul in the GWS game.

The game is just so quick now with umpies having a view of maybe a third of the game as opposed to the olden days when 1 umpire could keep up with a game. Even under the 2 umpire system they had a reasonable coverage. In the end the best player won the medal but there are so many voting anomalies it does descend into farce occasionally.

Left is Best
You have to remember they don't take stats into account.

If Kane Cornes has 40 disposals, but most of them are in and under or simple marks and drop punts, and hence not really noticable while Dangerfield has a few amazing runs and a couple of nice goals but has like 18 disposals overall he is likely to get the votes even though its obvious who had the better game when you look at the stats.

I also believe there is a very strong corelation between free kicks for and votes. Its why I would have chucked a tonne of money on Kerr the year he finished second, and why IMO guys like Dangerfield and Joel Selwood polled so well. Ablett may also recieve favourable treatment from the umpires, but I don't care about that as he honestly deserves it.

I would have expected Monfries to get a few more though... the umpires love him.

Justin Leppitsch to coach the Lions, left field choice, hope he can stop the bleeding.

Don't know about that. Hardwick praised him a fair bit in his first 2 years as defence coach. Haven't heard much the last 2 years. Don't know if it was Hardwick that got him to Richmond, but they both started at the end of 2009 season. Another defender appointed as head coach.

Simpson can't do anything much until after the Hawks finish up.
Didn't Sanderson leave Geelong / Collingwood before a flag? Or maybe it was Neeld.

Either way, I remember seeing an ex-assistant who left the club during finals to take up a head coaching role hugging a player after a grand final won from the seating.

More left field in that he was never really talked about in regards to any other positions in the last two years.

I hope the AFL are prepared to kick in, if needed, to ensure he has a properly staffed and resourced footy department at his disposal. We learned our lessen throwing Primus in the deep end hopefully they'll learn from Voss.
