I would just like to say, whatever your personal convictions are on how society should be, or what its meant to be are, this outcome brought the family some piece of mind, and however small that may be, that is worth more than whoever thinks that the way the outcome was achieved isn't a "good thing", as they have already been put through more than any human family in a civilised society should.

As the good Doctor has said, if anyone wants to continue the discussions of ethics in the justice system, perhaps there is more appropriate threads.
Handled with grace edgie, well done. My eldest is nine years old at the moment and this stuff hits home.

As for footy, bring it on! Think between Essendon, dusty Martin and the pies players, we have hit the off season scandal quota sufficiently.

Time to hear about houses being trained down and tracks being burnt up.

Sorry, in Sydney for the last week, what has been released about Menzel and his attitude being poor? Don't tell me that the trade of the century may have been a mistake.

Gill is a very intelligent man, very intelligent. My own personal opinion is doesn't have that really strong character that leads from the front as well lacking that class leading foresight that really good CEO's have.

True, his intelligence isn't the issue, but he's the fact checker, I and T dot and crosser, not a visionary or leader material. Nothing wrong with that, not everyone is leader material. The AFL commission appointing him are most to blame.

That's not really a good thing.

The reason criminal charges are laid as the State vs Scumbag is that as a society we're meant to be better than a baying mob. So change.org influencing individual legal proceedings is not actually a good thing, no matter how satisfying it may be.
A least the "baying mob" would hand out some decent sentences.

To me judges and lawyers are the two of the most out off touch professions going around.

Petitions have a role to play and there really is nothing new about change.org/avaaz/etc apart from the speed of organizing the "signatures".

If "influence" means make a point about community expectations in a particular case to an elite professional group, and if community expectations are part of sentencing, all well and good.

If "influence" means political pressure to appeal "unpopular" verdicts, or pressure to change laws that particularly offend one large minority of society, business as usual. Sometimes a stupid and idea is still a stupid idea (death penalty, etc) and as you say we delegate power to "expert" representatives to avoid the horror of mob rule.

Sorry, but if there was any time the AFL required inspirational leadership it's now. A clerk can dot the i s and cross the t s.

I agree completely. Gil is a square peg in a round hole. At the risk of offending our lawyer brethren here (the exceptions to the rule ;) ) he's more interested in risk mitigation and blame aversion then fixing the issue. You can't really fix an issue until you first admit one exists.

Essendon have signed Jonathan Simpkin and north are likely to appoint a new captain and being a transition from swallow.

Essendon are also bemoaning the difficulty in finding mature age talls for their top ups. Given they are going to have a number of weeks head start on us, we'll be left with the slops (if we even get a top up). Unsurprising.

Any mature age rucks not currently listed are either over the hill, cooked or duds.. basically a slops fest

We are at a bit of a disadvantage at any case because Essendon top-ups are practically guaranteed game time
True but it's not worth getting too concerned over in terms of the talent factor, I think we'll get the 1 top up & it'll just be a 'in case of emergency ruck' that hopefully won't be needed.

Where has this been mentioned? I think Swallow is a pretty vanilla player and nothing leader, but it'd be a bit of a slap in the face to replace him while he's still quite young
