Not meaning to be insensitive whatsoever here...

But with Clark gone they'd have a lot of cap space. Would it be in their best interests to keep Frawley or get rid of him and free up ever more space and go after two big names? Clark was on 700K and Frawley would have been 4 to 5 (given he wants 8 I'd say around this mark).
Apparently he wants $800k, but I can't see any club offering that, he's simply not worth it, even at inflated FA prices.
Would imagine Melbourne would try to keep him, but will certainly be throwing big wads of cash at any player that looks their way.

I feel for a friend of mine who supports them he seems more depressed/disilliusioned with how they're run than I was during our darkest era which speaks volumes of where they're at as a club.
Of course he'd be depressed. Even during our darkest era and the cynicism / depression here was rampant we knew were constrained by a shit stadium deal, a license owner that was working against us, media that only wanted to sink the boot in and we had a decent latent fan base if we ever turned our shit around.

People say 'Look at Port as a model of how to turn in around'. How?

New stadium? Already at the MCG.
Tap 'bandwagon' supporters? Numbers low the last 40 years, they aren't there to tap.
Get celebrity (but qualified) media identity in charge? Kochie and Eddie are probably the two biggest media identities with any sort of skill set.
Remove artificial constraints (ala SNAFL and license)? Ummm, don't have those as an excuse.

Melbourne are not Port and we are not Melbourne for what transpired. The AFL could see our potential if they could just help us extract all the SNAFL and SA media knives from our back and let us stand on our own two feet. And kept us going in that interim. Melbourne aren't going to be anything, but a drain given how much more clubs cost to run these days.

Don't know if you guys are aware that some of the Port boys including Ken Hinkley make up the "Little Things" Syndicate that race the greyhound Cairnlea Layla, currently one of the best hounds going around at Angle Park, brilliant winner last night making it four wins on the trot and Jackson Trengrove, Angus Monfries and Ollie Wines were there getting their photos taken in the winners circle.:thumbsu: Winners are grinners!!

Is Frawley a restricted free agent? At $800k sounds like he's just trying to price himself out of Melbourne's range.
Frawley is an unrestricted agent thanks to a massively front ended contract by Melbourne.

He can walk out of Melbourne to a club of his choice.

There supposedly are clubs willing to pay that sort of coin so it'll be interesting to see where he ends up.

Frawley is a good player but is he worth around 9% of a clubs salary cap?
I personally think free-agency sucks. If a player really wants to move clubs they still could with the old system and the majority of the time they will get to where they want to go and I can't think of a player who hasn't got to at least the right state they wanted too.

I think we've used free agency well. We haven't paid overs instead using longer contracts to woo the player of choice. With Monfries the Bombers were only prepared to give him 2 years whereas we went in with 4. White was a similar story. At least this way we don't upset our current players by paying new recruits more.

I agree. Petulant Richmond supporters like to make out that we are paying Matt White far more but fact is we're paying him the same amount per year they offered, just for 3 years, plus with the added lure of playing in a team where his talent wasn't taken for granted and at a club with a strong player and club culture.

I still don't get why certain sections of this board complain about these longer contracts either. I hear complaints that these guys were offered a year longer than we'd like, when in reality we identify the talent we'd like and then aren't afraid to second guess ourselves with deals which take a bob each way in order to gain this talent. It basically comes down to, do we take Monfries and White on reasonable pay for 3 years and have them come to Port Adelaide, or offer them 2 and watch them play at Essendon and Richmond for the rest of their careers.

It's a very smart hound so it will only be racing on the two main nights I'd reckon, either Monday or Thursday nights. They tell me the boys are very keen so there would be every chance you would catch up with them at Angle Park when she races.
