had a trip to Hobart a few years back, we stayed in Battery Point, just above Salamanca, that area is amazing for history and quality of bars, food etc... that's the bottom of the pic. Why would you not want to enliven that whole district some more by utilizing that industrialized land just to the north, it would be epic. The museums are close too and the city is just to the left, it's a great p;lace to visit and would definitely drag in a heap of $$ for the locals.

What else do they want to do with that land? A park?

Historically, infrastructure has been one of the major areas of expenditure wastage, in large part because choices are politicised and not sufficiently scrutinised on economic grounds.

It doesn't really compare to the literal billions extorted out of the NDIS by middle men (probably quite often with dubious links to departmental officials) or the many thousands of bureacrats at state and federal level on $300k+ salaries adding two thirds of stuff all to anything.

I think infrastructure spending is just highly visible so the masses can latch onto it and vent their frustrations that way.

I have no idea. Has anybody asked?

One thing I do know is that there are a heap of people in suits who don't live anywhere near Tasmania who are more than willing to tell the people of Tasmania what is best for them and belittle them for daring to want to have a say.

Chances are the vast majority of people who live there actually DO want world class sports and entertainment facilities in that precinct and are more than happy to accept substantial Federal government funding to get it done.

My guess is that they just don't want the polo player from AFL House in Docklands holding a bloody gun to their head with his 'this or else' ultimatum. And they want to be engaged in the process of getting something that is right for them and not just the AFL.

And who can blame them?

Actually, people get upset about that type of spending as well.

Only a small percentage of government employees earn over $300k. Those that do are usually running complex departments or groups within departments, with large budgets and impacts on people’s well-being. And if you don’t pay senior public servants competitive salaries you will end up with less competent people in those same jobs, so any cost savings are likely to be counterproductive.

All major areas of government spending should be subject to independent oversight and review. But there is little doubt that property and infrastructure have historically been an important source of corruption and wastage…

The special salary cap that never gets noticed of the likes of Geelong and Collingwood has just become a LOT more valuable.

We need to get in on it. Surely Mr Guo has some land players can take off his hands. Or GFG need new lunchroom inspectors.

Went down for the game on the weekend. If they get this stadium up, it'll be a marquee away trip

The extraordinary popularity of Thursday night has seen the AFL schedule an extra contest this year, committing to 12 games across the home-and-away season and finals.
The AFL’s round 16-23 schedule will be revealed on Thursday, with the AFL to retain its round 24 floating fixture until weeks before that round to create maximum fixture drama in the last nine games.
The Herald Sun understands Collingwood will receive four Friday night clashes in those eight rounds and could be a contender for the round 24 Essendon-Pies clash.
The league customarily schedules five Thursday games to start the season and then five mid-season across the bye periods.
But this year the league will schedule Thursday night contests in rounds 16, 17 and 18 as well as the three games already locked in for rounds 13-15.
A Thursday night contest to kick off the finals series will make it a dozen contests across the year.

The way the AFL works, Gold Coast pay Geelong to take pick 1 off their hands. Here, Have our pick. Can we interest you a second round bonus pick?
You only have to see what the number 1 pick did to North. They’d be crazy not to give money to Geelong to take it off their hands.

richard flanagan and a bunch others put an alternative proposal:
Richard Flanagan hits out at 'disgraceful' stadium plan with alternative Macquarie Point vision

i mean yes, hobart does have a housing crisis, and probably most on the mainland don't know how ridiculous prices have gotten there in recent years.

but building housing right on the harbour there isn't gonna fix that. that shit is gonna be waaaaay overpriced.

the incompetent tasmanian labor party (the only state in australia still liberal) has decided to weld themselves to not building a stadium, which is dumb as dogshit. the people against the stadium are mostly green-left anyway, and sure as shit aren't voting for the libs. it's not going to be a vote winner to oppose it.

that area does need a redevelopment, the whole thing is a no-brainer really. the opposition to the stadium is basically highlighting "BUT THERE ARE OTHER ISSUES". there are always other issues. a stadium isnt gonna fix the shitty health system, but overall i think it will be a net benefit to the state.
there's far more stupid wastes of government money elsewhere. lots of them.

I’m not sure about it not being a vote winner. Two liberals took to the cross-bench because of the decision making.

While new housing in that area would be expensive, Labor would probably require a portion be affordable. You also have to consider the cascading effects elsewhere from increasing the overall housing supply. By contrast, a new stadium and AFL team would make the city even more expensive and potentially reduce effective housing supply overall as more homes are converted to short-term rentals.

If the stadium goes ahead someone will make out like bandits but it won’t likely be those in the lower half of the income distribution…

don't get me wrong, rockliff is utterly corrupt and an absolute campaigner and trash premier. as a lefty myself, i thought gutwein was alright.

the state got utterly cucked by Gil demanding a stadium which the state pays for, despite paying through the nose for GWS and GC to go ahead. don't disagree with any of that. Tas is getting screwed. but its the only way we're getting a team, or we'll be ****ed over for another 20 years.

Hobart is being getrified as ****, while the rest of the state stagnates apart from the particularly scenic areas where interstate investors can swoop in. Even that is better than total stagnation i guess. I'm sure it'll "trickle down" to the rest.

A common sense approach, but still means that Round 19, with 3 games at Marvel, will need one Friday game, one Saturday and one Sunday - meaning it'll be one of Essendon v WB (most likely), Saints v North, or Carlton v WC as a primetime Friday night game while the current top 8 clashes of Brisbane v Geelong and Port v Collingwood will be shafted. Round 21 is similar, 3 Marvel games, so no chance of Geelong v Port in Geelong getting primetime even if ladder wise it's the highest ranked Match of the round.

The AFL needs to commit to Thursday nights constantly but also to not schedule 3 games at one venue on any weekend with the floating fixture for it to actually guarantee the best games in primetime, but they really can't get the basics right.
