How many games have been played in Tassie in the last many seasons?

Why out of a sudden must we believe that the state needs a BILLION-DOLLAR DOME to host an AFL club of its own?

This doesn’t make any sense. It’s all BS, and I doubt that anyone involved is oblivious of that. They are all playing along for whatever reason.
There this concept I learned back in year 12 economics called 'Rent Seeking'. Manipulating public sentiment to rip money out of state governments (either in cash or in the form of gifted public assets like land or minerals) for investments, facilities and events in activities from which they (and their member organisations/private shareholders ) are the major beneficiary.

The AFL is a master of the Art.

Tassie may not get their licence, and I for one are not overly sad by this as the talent pool isn’t really there for a 19th team.

Yep. From a Port perspective there is zero benefit to us.

It’s not like Tasmania is some grand untapped market, it’s full of people who are lifelong fans of existing clubs and will just be another hungry mouth at the trough.

Hope it sinks.

I’m torn. I firmly believe Tasmania should have a team and also that 19 teams is too many.
Agree. Tasmania deserves to be in a national AFL competition. And the AFL has the finances to make it happen without bankrupting the state while ensuring that it gets the maximum support from Tasmanians.

But that would mean taking cash away from existing teams and possibly folding one of the 9 Melbourne based clubs to support a financially viable model.

The AFL shareholders are its clubs - and the majority of them which are not owned by the AFL are based in Melbourne.

That's why it won't happen in the way it should.

BTW, On the issue of Tasmanian support for the proposed stadium at MacQuarie Point its interesting to note the results of a survey conducted in February. What the polling found was strong support for the stadium among 25 to 34-year-olds. Older Tasmanians were most strongly against the stadium, with 70 per cent of 55 to 69-year-olds disapproving, while an 74 per cent of over 70s did not like the plan. No surprises that the idea is hated most by those living in northern Tasmania. In a state with the oldest demographic those figures are damning politically.

I would love to know the criteria Koch used to determine Port Adelaide were in support of a 19th licence.

The fact that our club is owned and controlled by the AFL?

We, as members and supporters can't continue not to understand how much this determines how our Board votes and acts on matters affecting the game on a national level - even if it is to our own club's supporters and on field detriment.

In contrast, every Melbourne based AFL club is member owned - they vote as a block in a way that is in the long term interests of their members - NOT for the best interests of the national competition.

Don’t think there’s an issue finding players who wouldn’t mind Tasmania.

Might not be all the kids but once settled I can see the attraction for mature players.

The Basketball team does ok I hear?
I just could never see a real superstar playing there. Basketball is very different, its a small sport everywhere.

Agree with you guys on the stadium but can you imagine trying to retain any decent player?
I think they deserve a team, I don’t want that team to ever be any good though.

I remember when the casino opened, its first big name attraction was Jerry Lewis. 🤮

It used to be a prize on the Wheel on the Don Lane Show. Bert Newton kept calling it the revolting restaurant.

**** the devils.

A sentiment that The Age says is (not surprisingly) shared by several AFL clubs despite their previous stated support for the new Tasmanian team.

The AFL has a contract with the Tasmanian government, which has to provide this expensive stadium (opponents dubbed it “the Gil Mahal” after departed AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan) – as the price of admittance to the competition that has long plundered Tassie’s players and dollars.

A hard-headed portion of the 18 rival club presidents will sniff Tasmania’s political convulsions and hope that this uncertainty surrounding the stadium scuppers the 19th licence.

Those presidents know that, should the Devils collapse, that $360 million designated to Tassie over a decade will remain in the AFL coffers, and the drafts of 2027, 2028 and 2029 that are slated for pillaging by the new team will be preserved.

Very much a natural response, I’m sure all the clubs don’t want another team in.
I believe a third team most probably from WA would be the best move financially.
Shit load of money in the west.
Can see it now, The Rinehart Rhino’s.
