Between 1983 and 1987 Port won 1 finals match. We exited finals in straight sets in 1986 and 1987.

In 1988 John Cahill came back to Port, we finished minor premiers and won both our finals to win the premiership. And that was against a Glenelg side that was winning finals experienced having played in the previous 3 grand finals, winning 2.

You can't write off a whole list of players because they've been poorly prepared on how to play and win finals. Players will be weeded out, but others will respond to the challenge.

It always annoys me how every other list in the comp is just better than ours by default:

- Collingwood finish 17th in 2021, then Craig McRae comes in and wins a flag by 2023 = ā€œtheir list is better than yoursā€

- GWS finish 16th in 2022, then Adam Kingsley comes in and gets them one point away from a Grand Final in his first year = ā€œtheir list is better than yoursā€

If North Melbourne or West Coast are big improvers next year, then watch the goal posts shift so that their lists are and always were much better than ours.

Its why if you're judging coaching the only objective way is by tenure of the coaching group. Once a coach has been there 6+ years (enough time for their first draftees to hit their mid-20s) its their list, and excuses about the list are gone. I dont agree with David King about everything but he has nailed this.
