News Port passes on Jaidyn Stephenson

DBJ and SPP are quite good role players. They could absolutely be key parts in a functioning forward line with a decent KPP and quality crumbing small, with a good third tall being icing on the cake. People who hang shit on that pair have NFI. No team has 6 attacking superstars up forward. Defensive small forward is a legit role thats gotten a bad rap at Port because of Hinkleys questionable selection policies with other players who shall not be named.

Arguably, we're a bit stacked for defensive small forwards who can actually hit the scoreboard in a clutch moment. Particularly DBJ. People still think of him as the mid career liability down back. But since moving forward he's second to Roberto as the most clutch player we've had in the past 10 years, and it really passes me off that people don't recognise that.

SPP is an average player who is now a few knee reconstructions deep. Bit pissed we signed him as long as we did. He got a deal length reserved for superstars.

4 years? Thats an average to good player contract. And I doubt it would be on massive coin.

Have you been following afl for the last 5 years?

SPP would be considered a lot better if he could kick straight. Gets plenty of opportunities at goal but goes at less than 50% accuracy. Looks like Jaidyn had similar problems in the trail games, without doing all the other stuff Pep does.
Some of Stephenson's shots were like 45m out on the boundary. SPP's problem are shanking snaps at goal 25m out right in front.

3 years is standard for top 10 at your club. 5 for top 2. SPP is borderline 22 and got 4. The coin isnt the issue, its the length.

what the hell is this?

That probably won't be considered a popular opinion but is completely valid. I also thought the deal for Todd Marshall was pretty generous at the time as well.

I hope people realise that my point about DBJ and SPP was regarding their age and not their talent.

ie its silly to not pick up a 27 yo because he is too old (which was suggested in here) if you are instead giving those spots to a 30 yo and a 28 yo.

May as well just shut the forum down then if this is going to be the response every time the club makes what appears on the surface to be a bad decision.

At this stage Carr, Dew, Collins, Reeves and co have done absolutely nothing to deserve our blind trust as a supporter base. To be fair they haven't had a chance to yet, maybe (hopefully) they will in time, but as things stand they haven't. And having more information than us doesn't guarantee that they're interpreting that information correctly.
And conversely have done nothing that we can definitively say has been a bad decision.
I'm sure we'd all feel better if the club ran any decision past you first.
I mean do you seriously believe you know better than Carr, Dew, Collins and co.? That's a rhetorical question btw.
Yeh I'm being purposely sarcastic because frankly your mostly negative towards the club, though I'm sure in your mind you see it as holding the club to account.

I agree with your logic. The obvious exception is that both have a proven track record at the club, though that reputation is also subjective.

Trust is earned, not handed out as a default position.

So shut the forum down then entirely, you reckon? Or just go the more moderate option of banning all dissent against Dear Leader's decisions?

Funny that Josh Carr himself has emphasised that he believes in welcoming other people's disagreements and opinions, whereas you're here having a whinge that somebody dares question him.

If Mitch Zadow ends up being a match winner and plays some games in the 1s this year and kicks bags then myself and others will have some egg on our faces. And I'll be scarfing that egg down like its scrambled eggs from a 5 star michelin chef.

Yeah the top liners are on 6-7+ year contracts now. Only reason they are smaller is to be out of contract in FA years.

We've handed Luko 6mil for 6 years, Farrell a 5 year contract, and Marshall is on a 5 year deal.

Logan Evans is nowhere near a top 10 player and got a 3 year deal.

I remember about a year ago I made a very similar post about Kane Farrell's contact and pretty much everyone told me I was wrong - I went and looked in to it with similar players and confirmed that I was pretty wrong.

What you're saying is definitely what makes sense for clubs and how it should be though.

Not really. If a new employee starts, they are afforded a level of trust that is either reduced or improved upon with time and their actions.

I would hate to work for a place where you are “not trusted” on day 1, and told that trust needs to be earnt.

No issues with Farrell getting a 5 year deal, especially if the added security of years means you get away with slightly less on the total money.

Likewise Marshall, but yes there is risk associated with that. As we have seen with Marshall’s concussion issues and move to defence meaning he’s not necessarily the best 22 player he was as a forward pre concussion issues.

Someone like evens getting a 3 year deal, no issues with that, especially if it means he’s on lesser money which provides us more money for our top end.

How Lukosius gets 1 mil a year for 6 years is pure madness, unless the Suns are paying a big portion (like half)

Some sliding doors with the youth over talent approach.

In the past, we went for "talent" (Jack Watts), Melbourne ended up with Bayley Fritsch.
