News Port passes on Jaidyn Stephenson

SPP is an average player who is now a few knee reconstructions deep. Bit pissed we signed him as long as we did. He got a deal length reserved for superstars.
He's on his second knee reco currently. Was going at 15 touches and better than a goal a game after the first one. No idea what people expect of a player in his role.

Butters mate, I'll allow it
I just think, in terms of a business model, you need to reward a few lads from time to time for making the trip interstate and playing Twos footy. You want to attract talent from interstate to improve your reserves and the competition as a whole, after 5 years of NO ONE getting a gig, those interstaters will quickly dry up.

Considering it comes with an addition 1.1 behinds a game, and what a lot of those misses are. I'd prefer to get 2 goals a game out of him.

Sure. Thats great, me too. List me all the 2 goal a game defensive forwards across the league. Won't take you long.

Some sliding doors with the youth over talent approach.

In the past, we went for "talent" (Jack Watts), Melbourne ended up with Bayley Fritsch.
Jack Watts cost a second round pick, so not sure what parallel that has with the Stephenson situation.

Wut? SPP has been kicking on average 1 goal 1 behind for the last few years. Considering how many of those behinds he kicks really should've been goals, I don't even think its much of a stretch for him to be a 2 goal a game forward.

My point is that defensive forwards don't average 2 goals a game. 2 goals a game puts you 11th in the Coleman last year, or 9th in 2024.

15 touches, a goal, almost 3 tackles...these are good numbers for a defensive forward.

People have expectations that are mind boggling unrealistic in relation to this role.

Trying to find out why, something must've happened this week
I know him and his family very well .. when I asked what the reason was he said it’s age demographic… Carr is going all out on youth … games he played in he did well so obviously it’s got nothing to do with his ability

Hope he gets a chance somewhere. His attitude after being let go has been positive and supportive.

Yeah I said before it's nothing to do with his ability. But I don't think the age demographic is the only reason as he wouldn't have been invited in the first place if that was he case. There's a bit more to it than that from what I hear.

I think it's because we really like Zadow and O'Brien and think there is a lot of upside to both of them.
Zadow's interview was pretty impressive. Perhaps his trajectory has been so steeply upward in such a short time that we think he could become something very special. O'Brien potentially fills a role longterm as a dependable, lockdown defender that we just haven't got another option for at present.

Yeah. The maths were the same when we invited him.

Could've been insurance if zadow wasnt able to get over his injury and perform - he did say they were in contact with him pre rookie draft.

But suddenly within a month of getting on the track he appears to have shot the lights out

In fairness, what he got told isn’t likely to be the whole reason so as not to offend unnecessarily.
