Review Port v essendon review thread

Watching the 'All the goals' package really does make you feel warm and fuzzy. One can quickly get caught up in the hype. I've felt this feeling a few times this year, and if history is to go by, its the next game that really has been a reality check of where we're at this year. I won't start believing until we're set in concrete and finals bound. FFS Port back it up for a change, otherwise you really are a joke.

• “Some of the curiosities of last week were weird, you can see what they’re growing and that it comes with these fluctuations and that was the best of them” - GW

• “Great point about the young team” - MR

• “Kenny gets his head kicked in, oh you’re gonna drop Lycett and pick Ladhams, but he rewarded him with his performance. Maybe the noise will die down” - MR

How and why do all these muppets view this year in isolation with Ken?

If he was coaching a Melbs club he'd already be on his bike with his record post 2014.

Because 14 of our best 22 moving forward into 2020 are 25 years of age or younger (Amon, Byrne-Jones, Houston, Rozee, Butters, Duursma, Marshall, Wines, Clurey, Powell-Pepper, Burton, Bonner, Howard, Ladhams (assuming Ryder isn't best 22 next year which he won't be)). And only one of them (Wines) has played more than 100 games.

They call it a young team because it is a young team.

In spite of that youth and inexperience, this Port Adelaide team has managed to do what the previous incarnation from 2015-2018 could not - win against Geelong at home, West Coast away, Essendon away and Adelaide away. And not just win...win comfortably at worst and flog teams at best.

This is a different team. A better team, with younger, better players that would be outperforming the expectations of the club after we traded out Polec and Wingard.

This sort of uneducated s**t is why we have the blow ins coming to this board after years of Hinkley being past his expiry date and asking why we're all so angry.

It's been such a relief to here WGT teeing off a bit in the media because our expectation management has worked a treat on interstate hack journos who don't bother to look at our situation with any sort of critical thinking.

A 25 year old is typically in their sixth or seventh year on an AFL list and you’re counting that as ‘young team’?

And maybe measure the actual 22 Hinkley is putting out there instead of a cherry-picked ‘best 22’ that Hinkley is loathe to select.

Edit: Of the team actually selected to play Essendon, 12 of 22 will be 26 or older in Round 1 2020.

Footy Wire says our disposal efficiency was 79.0%.

410 disposals - 255 kicks + 155 handballs @ 79% = 324 effective disposals. Assuming 85% efficiency on handballs which is normal = 132, means 192 kicks were efficient ie 75.3% kicking efficiency.

Don't think I have ever see that figure for us. I do remember one of the commentators early in the last quarter saying Port have kicked at 75% today and I thought, we will probably fu** that up, but we didn't, which was great.
Lots of kicks were to Port players in a paddock of space which helped. We're not going to be given anywhere near that much space against most other teams.

And just for those who might think the numbers are excessively skewed by the likes of Westhoff and Boak:

• Essendon had 11 players 23-and-under, Port had 10

• Essendon had 16 players with less than 100 games, Port had 12

• Essendon had 6 players with less than 50 games, Port had 6

• Essendon had 5 players aged 27-and-over, Port had 11
Yeah but how many players did Essendon have that were younger than 20 years and 330 days?

Am I doing this right? :D

EDIT: Just to make sure the post is not confusing, I agree with tribey .
We got lucky with our first rounders, remove 1 or 2 of them and we have a bog standard list wrt age.
If anything our best players are now getting close to retirement age.

Essendon had to reboot their list only 3 years ago due to the impact of the WADA sanctions, so we should have accounted for them easily.
Yet, here we are, fighting for the last spot in the 8 with them.

Any notion that just scraping into the finals is a 'pass' is fundamentally flawed.
If we make finals, we need to win them.

Agreed. It's almost like being pleased with winning the division 8 prize in Power Ball.

Nobody was 'kicking his head in' for bringing in Ladhams. Keep Lycett and drop Ryder for Ladhams and nobody would've batted an eye.

"paddock of space"
When one of our players got the ball, it was great to see our players run to open space and give options. This has been missing in several of our games.

"How do you Port Adelaide keyboard warriors feel now after bringing Ladhams in paid off!"

"Umm, we wanted him in, but we wanted him to ruck with Lycett"

"....oh"

And Cam the man was very good with his I50's. He's not everybody's cup of tea on here but I thought he did well.

Check out that guy's posting history. Definitely Janus.
Especially this bit in 2017:
Actually, the team that took the field against West Coast was, on average, a full two years younger than them with something like 20 games less experience per player.
Knew how to judge a side’s age when it suited the argument

Our average age is 25 years old which is neither young nor old.
ORLY? 25 not young.

Essendon are trash defensively. Most of that space existed because of Essendon's lack of structure, and players were able to lead into space uncontested due to their lack of pressure.

Yeah we played well and ran hard, but we can't discount just how poor Essendon's defensive game was that allowed it.

Games against Sydney and Freo at Adelaide Oval will be interesting tests given defensive pressure is their most reliable facet
