Well what an amusing day at the football that was. Certainly unexpected.

Ill go straight to the point and state that one of the goalposts felldown halfway thru the 2nd quarter. Not in the Leigh Matthews style where it snapped in half, but the entire goalpost - padding and all - ended up on the ground.

Im not too sure what happened as i was marking the point in my budget at the time, but when i look up there is a goalpost missing at the northen end!!

Much deliberation followed. Should the game be called off. Do we use a jumper as a post like we do in Primary School. Whats goin on? Some bright spark decided to try out the mini league goalpost which was about half the size as the ground point posts and about the same height as the goal umpire - no good!

In the end they called halftime then and there...had 25-30 minutes off while digging up the turf and whatnot and luckily there was a spare old goal post which was about 80% of the height of the original one which ended up being used.

Amusing stuff!!

The game itself was a bit of a lacklustre affair with nothing but respect riding on it.

Glenelg started with the breeze and had the lead at 1/4 time.
This short rookie for Glenelg with a much impressive afro hairstyle kicked a nice goal. Funnily enough his name was Michael Hare. I found that quite amusing!!

Port Adelaide was pi$$-farting around with the ball a lot in the 1st quarter and Glenelg looked the more desperate side.

The 2nd quarter started at Port looked the better side from then on. A goal to Tony Brown who was getting a lot of the ball and a goal to Brad Smith at the other end happened before the post incident.

Halftime was called with Glenelg 2 points up.

Play resumed after the break with Port Adelaide kicking 3 goals - to Brown again, Plapp and Wait. Port were 17 points up at the break.

Ackland had been playing ok in the ruck while Ebert as usual was a busy beaver. He would have had something close to 12-13 possesions in the 1/4 alone. Fiegert, Brown and AhCHee were also playing well.

The third quarter and Port held the Bays off for the most part into the wind. 5 goals each for the quarter with the Bays closing a point to 16.

Che kicked his first goal (after 4 or 5 behinds) and the other forwards started getting into the game - Plapp and Beinke mainly.

The last quarter was a goalfest with 13 goals scored for the quarter (8-5 Ports way). Evans ended up with 3 for the quarter while Ebert and Sinkunas had 2 each.

In the end a pretty comfortable 6 goal win for the Magpies to finish off the year.

Player Reviews:

Brown - Played well. Marked strongly, kicked some goals and looked dangerous most of the time. High in our best.

Plapp - in and out of the game. Ended with 2 goals.

Funcke - some typical Funcke mistakes. Kicked a goal.

Lyle - One of his better games i felt for the year.

Ebert - Best on ground by so much it was ridiculous. Had a huge amount of the ball in the 1st and last quarters. Kicked 2 goals. Took a couple of huge pack marks as well which just reaffirms my theory that he is the best mark for someone under 6'0 ive ever seen.

Poulton - Put his hand up for a recall to the Power i thought. Always looked busy and attacked the ball with his usual vigour.

Clayton - spent most of the game on the bench.

Ellen - next

Ashley - Another who played well. Better in the first half.

Ackland - Won the ruck. Around the ground got a bit of the ball but didnt use it greatly.

Fiegert - Our best defender for the day.

Evans - was benched during the first half and 3rd quarter before kicking 3 last quarter goals.

Mcdowall - a quiet match for Buzz today.

Bamford - Started well in defence, saved a few goals before being taken from the field.

Beinke - fell in and out of it. Kicked 2.

Wait - Gave ferrethead Koster a bath. Dominated the last half.

Miller - Played mainly in defence, kicked a fantastic goal from a tight angle with the breeze going across the face of goal. Did alright.

AhChee - Broke even with Smith in the end.

Che - average. Got the ball alright but stuffed around with it too many times. Ended with 1.5.

Sinkunas - geez i like this player. Tough, hard, and a booming kick. Wouldnt surprise if he is picked up by an AFL club next year. kicked 2 great last quarter goals.

Wilson - one of his better games i thought.

Votes:
10 - Ebert
9
8 - Fiegert, Sinkunas
7 - Brown, Poulton, Wait, Wilson
6 - Lyle, Ashley, Bamford, Beinke, AhChee
5 - Plapp, Ackland, Evans, Miller

About your remark on Sinkunas, do you think Port have any players the Power might look at picking up? Keeping in mind that a player Port used as a forward in 2002 has been a good defender for Collingwood all year.

I couldn't see who were the players involved from my vantage point (my eyes are dim, my back is bent, my legs are old and knackered) but here's how I saw it:

Port player had a shot from a tight angle, from in front of the Powder puffs building. Glenelg player in the square went to spoil it. Port player in the square tried to shepherd the Tiger off. Glenelg player was sent hurtling into the goal post. Goal post toppled to the ground in its entirety. Crowd erupted! :D

The hilarity that followed was more than worth the price of admission. The dead goal post got carted off while the crowd called for the stretcher. Some halfwit fetched a mini-league goalpost and sprinted down to the goal square with it. The crowd laughed. Mini-league post was planted in the ground. The crowd laughed harder. Goal umpire grabs the mini-league post with one hand and flings it off the ground. The crowd laughed harder. Eventually half time is called early, with the quarter to be completed after half-time. Bloody hilarious.

The replacement goalpost was about 9/10 of the size, was planted a good half-metre further back from the proper spot, and leaned something shocking. I was hoping like hell someone would have dobbed a poster in the remainder of the match, 'coz they would have knocked it clear out of its footings. Sadly this didn't eventuate :( After the game I noticed some kids were kicking the post, trying to knock it free...

I thought the game was good value. Both sides had a crack, both sides had periods of dominance. The final margin didn't do justice to the game. The final margin did however do justice to Glenelg's forward lines, or lack thereof. Smith at full-forward just didn't cut it. All too often the Bays players made poor choices in front of goals. If the Tigers had a functional forward line they'd have been 4 goals up by the time the post got poleaxed - and the final margin would have been a lot closer. Perhaps they could poach Hargreaves in the off season...

Lucas Block and Michael Hare both had good fist runs. Hare in particular looked like a real goer, I was a bit dismayed that Nobes had him playing off the bench in every quarter.

And how was that screamer taken in the backlines by - ummm - Ty Allen? Best mark I've seen in the SANFL all year, rode right across the Port bloke's shoulders.

Bazzer dragged me into the Port rooms after the game, where I suffered the twin mortal perils of drinking light beer (designated driver :( ) and listening to that phuckhead Barry Curtin do the after-match presentations. A bigger goose in SA football you could not possibly find. This wannabe-comedian was paying out his own players (O'Loughlin) and paying out the goal umpires for a few cheap laughs - thoroughly unprofessional. A two-year-old could write more informative articles by daubing dung on paper with a stick, than Curtin does in his weekly Sportsbeat column. The man is a waste of space.

Other than that, much fun was had in the Port rooms. Got chatting with a few of Bazzer's Port friends and had a good time.

Oh Macca - you'll be pleased to know that your fave player Shane Ellen announced his retirement.

And so begins the long, drawn out ennui of the off-season.
Looking forward to next year already...

I remember Round 2, 1971 Norwood v West Torrens at the Norwood Oval. Henry Dabrowski (West Torrens) flew for a mark at the Parade end, and as he was coming down he grabbed the behind post and pulled it out of the ground.
They got a mini league point post and stuck it in the ground, it looked really stupid.
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Lokan was always a defender before becoming a makeshift full forward tho. Thats what he said on radio during the week, that all thruout his juniors and in the ressies etc. he was played as a defender.

I rate Sinker quite highly. Hes a smooth footballer. Not very pacey but he makes up for that with great skills on both sides of his body, is tough as nails and can kick a long goal.

Magpies players that would be looked at would be:

Harry Miller - only just turned 18. Should be at least rookie listed.

Craig Parry - would make a bloody tough CHB/backup ruck.

Sinkunas, Brett Goodes, Scott Collison, Shane Jordan, Cameron Ilett, Scott Fraser would all be talked to id imagine.

Of course, maybe one or two would only be picked up.

Norwood 21.9(135) d West Torrens 16.21(117)

I don't remember that happening by the way,or for that matter ever hearing about it. Classic stuff.
Also pi$$ funny what happened at Alberton yesterday.
Good reading Macca19.
