Well it seems as if this board, which started with such promise, is not putting in a good pre-season. Shame that, considering we should be having more to talk about, not less.

Quick observation. I get a bit annoyed with the goal-kicking accuracy bizzo. Anyone know what Port's accuracy was last year? Well I reckon it was no worse than any other year, was no worse than the AFL average, and in fact was a lot better than 99. But that's just my adding up, and comparing it to the results of the years that are in the AFL Stats book.

Now it's true that there were some games in which the kicking was poor, but it's no surprise we actually won some games partly by kicking straight.

TO conclude, I think the goal kicking was one of those "shadows" we were leaping at inthe first half of the year.

Mudholian, There was 12 games last year where we kicked more points than goals and 2 other games where we kicked the same amount of points as goals. So that means there was only 8 games that we scored more goals than points. I would of been more happier if it was the other way around.

One game that comes to mind is the Sydney game, where we kicked 6-1 in the 1st qtr and then kicked 5-18 for the last 3 and we ended up losing the game by 26 points.

Maybe the main problem isn't the amount of points but maybe its when the points are kicked. It seems in too many tight games where we need quick goals to give ourselves some breathing space we always seem to kick points. Which means the games are always close. Port just don't seem to win games by big margins its always a 2-4 goal victory and that really affects our percentage.

Port's goal kicking has been woeful.

I think it starts upfield. Where we can get on top in the centre then we move the ball much more directly into the forward line...enabling the forwards to lead out or mark "on the hot spot".

Where we lose, or the centre is equal, we tend to push the ball wide...it also takes more time, enabling the defenders of the opposition to get back, again force the forwards into the pockets.

Clearly there were some times when it was mental, but there were plenty of good examples (say against west coast) where our dominant midfield enabled the forward line to function more effectively.

I also think Tredrea's role is not well defined. His strength is his marking, and I think it would help if he stayed at the traditional CHF position. He tends to run around a lot now. This would give the players a focal point, particularly when running the ball out of defence, thereby straightenning them up.

anyway.......

Guys, I believe the goal kicking question is polarized with Tredrea's presence.

Clearly Tredrea is a young man capable of so much in footy, he has all the attributes, and potential to be Ports answer to Carey.

At this stage though he has not taken that next step, (we live in hope that 2001 will be THE year) and I see the point of focus on him is his goalkicking conversion rate.

If Tredrea was to have kicked over 50 or 60 goals in 2000, instead of the 32 he kicked, we would not be having this discussion now, we would now be saying will Tredders take the step up to genuine AFL champion.

The goal kicking issue is focussed on Tredrea, he kicks straight suddenly the issue is gone, I'm betting the young man has it in him to kick off the potential tag, and now earn the "champion tag"

Geezoos! This thread is from 2001! Time is indeed cyclical...

Ludicrous thread bump. 2001? Carn.

I decided to click on the last pages. This was on page 577, but it seemed so fitting for our times!

Different players, coaches, fitness staff, chairman, board, CEO....

Yeah, nah.

Precisely! That's it! Everything is different from 16 years ago, and yet, here we are... Bad kicking! :-)
