Seeing as we have a few draft picks in the 30s on, thought it might be interesting to compare how we've fared in the past. I cribbed a bit on 1999 (otherwise not too much on show) but at least I didn't stoop to including Nick (#25) in 1997 ...

1996

#37 Adam Kingsley

1997

#41 Danny Morton
#57 Darren Fraser

1998

#37 Adam Morgan
#39 Toby Thurstans
#54 Derek Murray

1999

#27 Cain Ackland
#28 Brent Guerra
#57 Steve Brosnan

2000

#35 Allan Murray
#50 Domenic Cassisi

2001

#62 Damon White
#76 Jared Poulton (redraft)

2002

#42 Brett Ebert (F/S)
#57 Wade Champion

Stewart should look beyond the usual spots. Michael Hazell played with Old Melburnians - used to be on Collingwood's list until MM told him they didn't need one more of his type. Absolute gun. Andrew Biddlecombe of Old Xaverians - ready to go, running, leaping, rebounding defender who can play on talls or quicks.

I'd also look at grabbing local young talent.

Two reasons:

1) Less likely to run home to mum.

2) I beleive that there is a lot of hype surrounding the U18 comp in Victoria, largely bewcause it is independent - hence a lot of kids in that comp end up with huge wraps on them, despite having never played against men.

As an example look at a Brett Ebert - probably wouldn't have rated top 50 in last years draft - but he was playing against men, and had been for some time - now look at him. I know its not true in all cases, but I put more value on players who are already playing against bigger bodies than youngsters who are playing agaisnt other kids.

I agree, the Vic comp has a far greater percentage of actual draftees, than it does of actual good players.

They get more drafted, but I'd say they have a greater % drop out too.

This is true, but as much as the u18s competition, it could be more likely related to teams preferring to take late punts on players from their own state. As there are 10 teams in Victoria, thats a lot more punts from a state that only produces around 50% of the talent.

Yeah, we've mostly not done much with them. Clearly Alan Stewart's weakness.
It certainly is deceptive, but the bulk of improvement in our list has been through astute trading (clearly not to be this year) rather than drafting.
Junior Burger, Kane Cornes, Josh Carr are the three standouts drafted since Choco's rein (Chad and Pighead before that). Perhaps part of the problem is not exposing players to AFL games early enough, such that they stagnate at SANFL and look average. I also think the last two years we have gone for big young kids with a history of early injury trouble (Damon and Wade). Hopefully both will step up to the plate but doubts over fitness will linger.
We could certainly look at 19 or 20 year-olds with the later picks who have got decent body size and have runs on the board. Brett Ebert is a really good example of a player taken a year later who has evolved beautifully this year. Craig Parry would be another potential candidate but ruckmen are not on our most-needed list.
The more I think about it, the more I reckon Mark McGough would appeal if delisted (???) and available to be picked up mid-late draft. It's astonishing to think that Collingwood would contemplate moving on a second-year player with good game-time already, when other sides, ourselves included hold onto players for years before realising they won't fulfil their potential.

Couple of points... Parry wont be a ruckman if he makes it at AFl level, more likely a CHF (if he works on his kicking), CHB (if he works on his pace a little), read some of Macca's comments on him. Second if McGough is delisted i'd certainly pick him up, but so would most teams, i can't see collingwood giving him up.

Parry could easily play ruck at AFL level, he is still growing and is already a human mammoth tank and can jump like a flea, White is short and so was Barnes and they are/were both very good ruckman.

For mine he is too slow and short to be a good AFL ruckman, i liken him to Poole, lots of heart, problem kick, good hands/mark, but he has a lot more potential to improve with more hard work, which he will do. Still a KPP player CHF/CHB rather than a ruckman IMO.
