What about the shit midfield?
Yes that is another problem of theirs, not as big as the striker problem but still big.

They havn't had a top midfielder since Deco was at Barcelona and when Rui Costa and Figo were running around. Tiago won't win you the big games.

Or they could rely on referee decisions to get them goals.

**** up bipolar creed the midfield is very well balanced.

It's ****ing better with Nani there - but the dude with the tatts is shit. As is the either blonde haired white dude. Saw them play all tournament - every game but the Korea DPR one and all I saw was a very defensively instructed team defend in numbers and not look particularly clinical or thoughtful in the final 1/3.

and while Ronaldo had a greedy, terrible tournament and was a disgrace as captain (he was, there is no denying that - there is no leadership at all from him and he should be the last candidate to captain a side - he doesn't have the qualities and truth be told, at least for Portugal he isn't a team player) what I was saying before the long sentence - their midfielders are weak with the ball - and because of this any striker would struggle..

Nani will make a big difference. his injury was felt. this much was obvious.

Was going to make this point (see we can agree sometimes). I'm hardly his biggest fan (that honour is clearly reserved for, er, Nani) and know full well how frustrating he can be, but he's become really important to both club and country, and he actually puts in a good shift and covers a lot of ground, he's not the downhill skier he's often portrayed as. Just won't pass.

Put it this way, they'd never have qualified without him.

Karma really, they could of gone for the win against Brazil with nothing to lose and they might of played Chile yesterday. They can only blame themselves. They are useless attacking good sides though and they urgently need a top striker to address this.
I didn't get all the drama for them not attacking Brazil. Clearly Brazil are a class above them (and Spain at the moment). We've seen them pull Chile apart after Spain had all sorts of problems with them.

Portugal probably knew that going forward too much against Brazil was going to cost them. Instead they went into the Spain match with their highly impressive defensive record, which would've made the Spanish pretty nervous, on top of their poor form and very lousy record against the Portuguese. I thought it showed in the first half with Portugal being the more dangerous side and Spain looking as if they had no clue.

There's people here continuously having a go at Portugal for having a shit midfield and no strikers, yet at the same time they're complaining about them not attacking Brazil who look a different class from everyone else. Keep it up :thumbsu:

When Xavi plays the ball, your leftback is in line with Villa.

Edit: Well he almost is ;)

Portugal had some good chances on the rebound.

Spain was forced to commit extra players in the forward half in their quest for a goal.

Ronaldo didn't do any solo runs. He was fast but he was closed down every time, might have gone to ground a little too easily and the ref was having none of it.

When Xavi plays the ball I get excited :p

As for simulation, Portugal is very much the gold standard these days. CRonaldo alone just about doubled the tournament count against Cote d'Ivoire. The guy was flopping all over the place, disgraceful - I counted at least four massive embellishments, if not outright dives.
The spit at the cameraman's feet right after the Spain game and the look into the len's wasn't exactly good PR.
