this has nothing to do with McKenna returning from overseas

he did quarantine for 2 weeks and tested negative 5 times since finishing his mandatory isolation

You seriously can’t expect the clubs to monitor all players 24/7 Nor should entire clubs pay the price of 4 points because of one player

AFL won’t force a forfeit they need to televise every game they can this year
I've amended my post to take into account some new details. It doesn't change my mind that Essendon should forfeit the points. In a season like this, you miss a game, you lose the points. It goes to show that if teams want this competition to go ahead, you better be taking all possible precautions because it's too easy to derail if you think life is returning to normal. Sounds like McKenna was very much out and about in the community - and afl players probably need to accept that they can't do that while the season is so precarious.

The thing that is sh*t is we are getting penalised because of the actions of a player from another club. That just doesn't seem fair but I dont know what the punishment should be to be honest

eagles freo crows and PA all have had their seasons unfairly compromised already

if McKenna is found to have grossly breached the rules then he should be suspended for the entire seaso

I think you will find the AFL will hold out with rescheduling this game in case they have another positive test and still have to deal with the Eagles and freo returning to WA and facing 14 day quarantine

But why should of mckenna faced anymore testing than any other players he had the 14 day quarantine and then was tested 5 times for 5 negatives up until Wednesday last week. Returned low irregularities test on Friday then retested Saturday morning

bombers did no wrong, the system worked. What failed was a playing not following the rules.

You could argue all fairness and integrity was gone after us and the eagles played a game after the season had been postponed

eagles freo crows and PA all I hubs, there goes fairness

Yup, if they wana be paid the money they are to play football this year they need to start taking things a hell of a lot more seriously. That goes for all clubs, including our own with Spargo and Pickett. If you contract co-vid because you disobey the restirictions put in place you're jepardising not only your own pay but every player in the AFL. The players union should be reading McKenna the riot act. They all need to be reminded of the consequences of their individual actions.

Where is the incentive for players to manage their risk around the virus if there's no penalty to the club they play for? Players carry responsibility towards their club, IMO. Much like they shouldn't whack somebody during a game and get suspended. The mere fact that McKenna has the virus means he wasn't taking enough precautions - and in doing so, he's buggered up his own club's chances and ours, as well as probably a couple of others whose games will be affected. Unless the disruption to the schedule affects every team, it's unfair - we should at least be playing the same number of games each week. Not that we were going far this season anyway, but it'd be nice if we weren't penalised because the team we happened to play this weekend was Essendon.

Apparently McKenna visited an open house inspection, and then visited friends and family. This is just days after another player (zerk- Thatcher) breached the rules and had Essendon officials warning their players not to break the rules further.

This blatant disregard from McKenna should see him punished, the club punished and a warning to clubs going forward that future disregard for the rules will result in forfeiting points. And I say this the same as I would Melbourne players did the same thing. Meanwhile clubs from S.A. and wa have effectively moved to qld to keep the season going, foregoing the chance to see their own friends and family for 5-6 weeks.

I can't see how this slides and Essendon aren't penalised. The fact they will have to play without their best players for 2 weeks is a good outcome for them, without a penalty. For a player breaching the rules like this and holding up a whole season, especially after being heavily warned by his club, should see harsh penalties handed down to both player and club.

Or am I overreacting cos I hate Essendon?
The thing is, it's really no different from what Kozzi and Spargo did. The only difference is that he caught it.

It's like saying that the penalty for a spear tackle should depend on whether the player gets injured or not. And who'd be stupid enough to have a rule like that?

What do you mean? The AFL already have a rule like that with the sling tackle... 😂

The season wont work. End of story.

If the AFL try and carry out the season, there is no premier. It's a waste of time.

Weekend Exhibition games from now.

The AFL should start handing out 4 game suspension for everyone who breaks restrictions and let the players know if they contract co-vid whilst doing so they will be suspended for 20 weeks. I bet you that would stop the bullshit and carelessness a tad.

McKenna did the wrong thing, he will be punished. Essendon shouldnt be forced to forfeit. Most clubs will face some unfairness this year but on a sliding scale. Is that big of a leap from a normal season sized having 3 x 6 day breaks. 18 side into 22 games, the fixture is unfair every year.

You didn’t answer my question why McKenna should of faced more testing than other players and ignored the fact he tested negative 5 times since leaving quarantine

That should of been announced prior to round 2. 👍

Yeah after the first couple of players breached rules they should've come down harder. Same with when the Crows pulled that camp bullshit in the Barossa.

great attitude, when things get to hard or unfair let’s just cancel it all. Nothing would be achieved if we all thought that way

Not sure if serious.

Love the part about hard or unfair. How about personal health and safety?

The season wouldn’t of gone ahead if their was a serious risk to the players health and safety

And if their was how does play exhibition games make it any less safe than playing games for points

Also major implications if the season is cancelled money wise

You are being too kindhearted and generous.

Corona McKenna has not only compromised the integrity of the 2020 season but his selfish actions may have jeopardised the already precarious season entirely.

The only fair and reasonable outcome I see:
Essendon forfeit their next three fixtures while all staff members and players are in quarantine. Percentage added for each default victor will be the average winning margin for the round.
Essendon pay compensation to the AFL and associated stakeholders and reimburse all relevant parties for lost income from the loss of the three fixtures.
An additional 4 million dollar fine for bringing the game into disrepute (again!)
Loss of first and second round draft picks in the next two drafts to discourage tanking and ensure the draft isn't compromised because Essendon had to forfeit games.

That's going easy on them I reckon.

The thing is, it's really no different from what Kozzi and Spargo did.
Kozzi and Spargo obviously washed their hands after taking a piss/ correctly social distanced.

See the footage of Corona at training? He's spraying LITRES of snot out of his nose. Surprised the whole hub isn't infected.

Like I said in my post, I'd agree with the punishment for whoever else does the same. Especially a second strike.

I don't really care about the testing regime, I care about the fact that he got himself a Covid infection. He's not taking the right precautions, he's messed up the season to an irretrievable degree for Essendon and Melbourne now - if either of us happened to be in any sort of contention near the finals, we have to squeeze in an extra game in a season which has no leeway to do so. In short, he's buggered it up for two clubs - he should face penalties for that. Easiest way is to penalise the team that didn't show up for the game.

Agree. The individual will face a penalty, club faces a “penalty” with a reduced list to pick from next week and a key group of players can’t train for 2 weeks.

you said in your earlier posts why didn’t they test McKenna more often, you cared about it an hour ago. Or you just don’t care now because you buggered up the facts

once again all clubs in a hub who have done no wrong face challenges of being away from home for 5 weeks

AFL has a rolling fixture and rescued game lengths so they have absolute leeway to reschedule this game

It's not enough - it's not just about what it's done to Essendon, it's also what it's done to the MFC.

I care less now that i've buggered up those particular facts, yes, but that was never the core of my sentiment. The core is: Essendon has affected our season because of one of their players getting the game postponed. They should pay all of the penalty, not us. We should get the points.

Any further ambiguities you'd like to zero in on?
once again all clubs in a hub who have done no wrong face challenges of being away from home for 5 weeks
Not relevant. A game was missed due to an Essendon player. I'm saying that game should stand as a forfeit to Essendon.

Absolute leeway? Only in the sense that they can cobble the fixture together in any ridiculous way possible just to complete a season. That doesn't mean asking us to play an extra game somewhere in a very congested calendar is a fair result for us, you know, the team we support, the Melbourne Football Club?

There isn't actually space for that game AND have it be not a big negative for us relative to the competition - even if you can technically squeeze it in there somebody. That's setting a very low bar for "leeway".
