Just got back from the game. I made a conscious effort to really look at the off the ball work so here it goes.

Positive

- Sheppard is continuing to improve every game. I think it was his best game in WCE colours tonight. Well done that man!
- Darling continues to work really hard off the ball to get into space. Not getting rewarded by our mids.
- Selwoods tag on Fyfe after Qtr time was very good, he really locked him down. Should concentrate on tagging the rest of his career.
- I thought Brown was fantastic. That fist is something to behold.
- In general, backline was solid.

Negatives

- Goal kicking is just shithouse.
- Our run and spread into space is non-existent and when we do get some, the disposal is usually very poor. This is one of the main reasons reason we are not getting clean ball to our forwards.
- Our forwards need to make space for each other, far too often there were mids clogging the run of Jack and Kennedy.
- Our midfield I just not getting clean ball out to our runners. We really do not have any smart footballers in the middle that can take 1 or 2 opponents on, shield the ball then release to a guy in advantage.
- Continually take the wrong option i.e. poor awareness. There were plenty of times today where there were better options on down the field but we insisted on going sideways into traffic.
- Too small and weak in the middle. We really do not have a Fyfe or Mundy that can just get the hard ball, dance around 2-3 guys and get it on to the next best option.
- The 3 talls is still making my head spin. It hasn't worked all year, why did they think it was going to work today.
- Cox was woeful and Glass wasn't much better
- Really struggling to get behind Gaff
- Starting to question the credentials of Don Pyke

Covering everything makes it impossible for us to add

+1 to negatives: Fremantle have almost caught us in derby wins

+
Darling, Sheppard, making the most of chances in the 1st quarter, getting back in the game in the 2nd quarter, Scooter on Fyfe despite the goal kicked against him, Hurn, Brown, Rosa

-
Goal-kicking, lack of composure, Cox/Glass, Shuey still being unable to break a tag, JK, Masten being well down on last year, Lycett /the 3 ruckman approach in general

Positives-

Sheppard (and to a lesser extent today Bennell) have been very good finds in the backline
The backline in general held up well for most of the game
Darling had another strong game, our only real performing forward this year

Negatives-
Masten and Kennedy are so far down from last years form, its concerning
Same problems as always wrt goalkicking and midfield strength

+ Sheppard. Still has those mistakes, but looks like a really dangerous weapon for us now. Impressed with him past few weeks.
+ My Man the KING. Works tirelessly.
+ Rosa I felt really worked hard as well
+ Beast Brown was excellent
+ Thought Tunbridge showed something.

- Kicking
- Priddis
- Masten

Positives:
  • Managed to halt Freo's momentum and not get blown away after a poor start.
  • Sheppard, keeps getting better and better.
  • Darling, tries really hard and is playing like captain material.
  • Mackenzie keeping Pav scoreless
  • Selwood shut down job on Fyfe
  • Rosa has been our best mid all year
  • Hurn's run down efforts, unlucky not to get paid a free.
  • New GoT ep tomorrow, can forget about this game.
Negatives:
  • Slow starts and finishes. For the past 3 weeks we have been annihilated at the start of the game and end of the game. We were really lucky Freo only got 14 points ahead in the first quarter. Rectify one of these 2 and we could've won all 3 games.
  • Obviously conversion. Worst ones were the 2 Hutchings misses. Also bad set shot misses from Cripps, Selwood, NN, JD.
  • Mundy (I think?) taking Selwood off the ball. Looked to be behind play, should've gotten a free kick for it IMO. To that point Fyfe had 0 touches from quarter time, I think it brought him back into the game a little bit. Wouldn't have minded if one of our guys did the same to Crowley.
  • Glass and Cox. Both champs but starting to show their age.
  • Our ruckmen. Sandi took about 3 contested marks in our f50 in the last quarter. Also how the hell did Zac ****ing Clarke kick 3 goals?

Positives:

Rosa has been solid for about 2 years imo, people are finally starting to realise what he's all about, another great performance, tackled harder than anyone and had numerous bounces, always looking to attack without a panic and is actually one of our better ball winners 1 on 1.

Darling tries like a boss, not sure if Kennedy is instructed to stay closer to goal or just is shit this year but he should follow Darling out and learn about body positioning for ground level balls, the kid is a natural and keeps his feet better than almost anyone, his 2nd and 3rd efforts are a coaches dream.

Shep is doing what Rosa did for me 3 years ago, he's showing courage and determination to both win the ball and then have an impact going forward, I'm all for him trying the odd harder kick when he's up the ground because he has the skills to pull it off imo. Keep it up.

Mitch Brown is solid, he's such an athlete but it's good to see he's got a football brain, playing so much better now he's given responsibility and not being thrown forward as a mr. fix it, confidence must be sky high!

Emac is beast, always has been, can't really compliment him much more but all in all our defence is solid.

Cripps looked like he belonged, he took shots when he had to, didn't try the miracle stuff unless necessary, tackled and ran far into defence on occasion to help out as well.

Negatives:

Not a horrible game but I felt Ballantyne found out Bennell a bit in play, tried to run him ragged, eliminating his bursts when he was in a position, hopefully doesn't happen much more but he may have figured him out, he looked reluctant to weave and turn too much.

Kick ins were shithouse, there was no thought put in at all and seemed to be a fremantle win moe often than not.

Hurn was below par, forgiven for his knee this time but some very average mistakes and kicks.

Kennedy, wtf happened? Couldn't take a good grab, pressure seemed to be lacking, can't kick cleanly, should have handballed to Cripps at one point and got tackled trying to get around someone ... just real wtf moments.

The ruckmen, it's hopeless if they don't mark it, as it stands none of the were marking it, even heard nicnat get some bronze cheers when he finally did which was sad considering how good and impactful he can be. He shouldn't be excluded from being dropped if the coach admits he's not fit why is he occupying a spot in our 22? I by no means think Sinclair is a better player but he's producing in the WAFL, fitter than Nicnat and would be more valuable around the ground. Also .. Cox needs to watch a tape of himself and just become aware of his faults.

Disposal .... just poor, forgetting about kicks but the handballs, being under pressure is one thing but a chain is broken when you handball to someones feet, every movement of the other players is pending a succesful handball, when it's not they are out of position because the play is 1 or 2 seconds behind where it should be, it just becomes a messy game of hot potato instead of a nice 123 handball out of congestion!!

IIRC we had about 5 posters so the result could well have been different. Overall I thought we played some really good football at times and (big IF) we had taken our chances we could have won the game - and the previous two as well.

Anyhow,
Positives: McKenzie pantsing Pavlich
Jack Darling - superstar - and Fremantle had the chance to get him the pick before us!
Shep looks as though he belongs
Bennell
Scooter's job on Fairy

Negatives: goal kicking !!
If Simpson "made a statement " by dropping Wellingham for poor form, then I look forward to seeing Kennedy playing for East Perth next weekend. He has been woeful for the last three games
Umpiring ( not just this game but competition wide)
Glass was dreadful, he should have been subbed.

These have been our cons last year and this year and why aren't they addressed. It feels like majority of the time if someone takes a mark their first reaction is to look sideways or back. And if you're in space and the ball is coming to your part of the ground what's the point in running towards your opponent and giving them the option to cover you or at least spoil the ball...Dean Cox I'm looking at you!!

We are a mediocre, shit club now. Im deeply frightened we will become another Richmond or worse. I still have faith we will win a flag this decade. But I dont want to be a club that waits 20 years between flags.

Positives: Mackenzie

Champ - I got back from the game and posted some rubbish on another thread.

Here's the thing. We aren't very good. Have a crack at Matt Priddis, tell Coxy to stop flapping, ask why our No. 14 trade is playing in the seconds. Won't make a bee's dick of difference.

I sat through that today. Herewith is my summation. Too many that can't play, most of the aforementioned with little upside.

We need to go deep in the draft.

I totally agree. We do not have the cattle to be a great side esp. in the middle. We really lack those players that just have a 5th sense for the play, that elite awareness and disposal that creates space and opportunities for the team.

Sums up my thoughts EXACTLY

Why in in the hell was tumbridge played ahead of Wellingham

Simon had 6 possessions and looked out of his depth totally ......he is not ready

Wellingham would have received a good opponent also

Frees up someone else .....form is load of crap ........you pick the best 22 and go with them ...

3 rucks is stupid ....again I will relate it's stupid and doesn't work at all

Picking rookies like tumbridge over 100 game premiership players is just the most stupid selection in our history ....

Is there a worse midfield?
I agree

They are al 180 cm and slow

None of them are good kicks bar shuey .....priddis needs to retire

We need to do what hawthorn did about 7 years ago.....the coach at the time said you will not play for hawthorn if you can't kick the ball

Also a note to kicking for goals ...at least run in straight when your kicking for goal. Here is a drill ...paint a white line on the ground ...paint some straight some at 45 degrees a and so on

Or use piece of rope. It points towards the middle of the goals ...you run in straight you kick straight

I have watched all of our guys with set shots ...none of them run in straight at the target

We are slow and not skilled ...we will not make the 8 this year and it's bad time to be sliding as gws and GCS will rise

We will not make the 8 for the next 3 years
