Gee I thought WCE were flying home 5 out 7 is not too bad , you can only beat the teams that are put in front of you plus we had our share of injuries too missing Selwood ,Yeo ,Rosa ,Waters ,Hutchings and Lecras at times from our best 22 .
Beating a full strength Adelaide in Adelaide was a major turning point in the players belief that they could finally play the way Simmo wanted the team to play that much looked obvious too me.
Rose coloured glasses.

The West Coast that couldn't beat Essendon or Richmond is the same West Coast that couldn't beat Carlton or Collingwood earlier in the year.

Positive - The gutting of the list starts.....NOW!

(Still can't believe they re-signed McGinnity, being a 'tryer' isn't a reason to be retained on the list, all players should be trying)

There is no positive to not making finals. The difference in draft picks is inconsequential.

Hmm, maybe bigger/larger chance at preseason AT BEST? And even then, every single Eagle would give that up for a shot at finals.

Simmo acknowledged in the presser that we didn't beat any sides in the top 8. He knows where we're at (more so than Woosha). I don't see scraping into 8th and assuming we beat Port changing that.

Big negative not making the finals. Players need to know what its all about to play in a final and what it takes to make it to the end. If we are not experiencing finals then the team is no progressing towards to ultimate goal.

With our spine its in the lap of the gods that we get a Fyfe or Heppell star mid without top 5 pick, and get back in front of the AFL tally this decade

I was despair after Richmond but back to bullish

Ok, lets get some reasoning here. We did not make the finals, but there are a lot of positives towards the end of the season.

Priddis is brilliant at getting the ball out to our mids. his tackling, running and disposals have improved our mids, his disposal has been the best I have seen of him.
NicNat has improved a lot towards the season when fit. He is our X factor.
Lycett is a find and keeping him is a bonus.
Our terrible midfield is now being a lot smarter in their disposals, Yeo, Lecca in the midfeld is a plus. Gaff and Shuey along with Masten are a key for us.
When fit, Ellis is one of our best generals on the ground, if fit, this man is good at setting up play, one of the bonuses of this season.
McGovern up forward at first, however his best is on the backline, well done to Simpson for this move. The Gov belongs there.
EMac with his defensive work, especially with Glass gone. He has step in some pretty big boots and stood up fantastically since Glass's departure.
Kennedy is improving every game. since the loss of his stutter run up, his goal kicking has improved. he will be elite.
They are finally learning Simpson's game plan and it's pretty to watch.

I look forward to 2015.

Have we seriously not beaten a finalist in 2 years? I wasn't aware of this and the fact that it is the definition of pure mediocracy. I have high hopes for next year and we should benefit from having a permanent captain, and having stronger knowledge of the Simpson game plan. The biggest positive for mine this year is that Simpson has publicly acknowledged our teams weaknesses. Hopefully we address these by recruiting or trading in quality midfielders. Even though on wins and losses alone we had a similar season to last year, today had like a dawning of a new era type feel to it. Start beating those finalists next year and bring back our "house of pain" home advantage, and we should be back into finals contention sooner than later!

There is absolutely nothing positive about missing the finals.

It always hurts when we don't play finals and hopefully the fire in the club's belly is really raging this summer. I've seen enough positives this year to think we can have a real crack at finals next season.

Nothing positive whatsoever about where we finished. Unless you've made the 8 (which we blew by choking against essendon) then 9th is the absolute worst spot you can finish.

Unfortunately for us, the team is still high enough on the ladder to think it's "close" to obtaining a premiership. So i'm doubtful there will be a radical cleanout or a wake up call for our clubs losing culture.

I think you're wrong in saying we have a losing culture, but what we do have is an acceptance of mediocrity evidenced by a player like mcginnity being given a contract extension

The steady as she goes philosophy will lock us in to mid table purgatory

Yeah i think you're right.

By losing culture.. i'm referring to the happy way the club can take losing to all the top 8 teams and finishing mid table, like you said. They'll come out this week and say how close we were to making an impact in the finals because we finished a bee's dick outside the 8 and all that shit. When in reality it's a load of waffle.

Wonder what they'll come up with next year, after we get a tougher fixture. The fact they retained Mcginnity... it just speaks volumes.

Depsite losing Cox and Glass overall we do have a better list than the 2011/12 team add and Shuey Masten Selwood etc are all mature now with games under their belts the should be getting into their best footy soon.

No reason why we cannot make finals lol.

By your theory, anything outside the top 4 is pointless.

I disagree, I think there is value in finals experience. However, missing the prospect of finishing 8th and getting smashed by Port doesn't particularly bother me.
There is no way Port would have smashed our team the way Eagles are playing at the moment.

Shuey for instance is playing great.

Players will feel the burn that they just missed out...
Agree that this is the most positive aspect of missing finals. The emotional rollercoaster that the players would have been on and the disappointment of being "that" close should burn throughout the whole preseason and hopefully be remembered in close games next year.

Hopefully the fact we won a few games towards the end of the season doesn't dilute the need to drop some list clogging players.

I see a positive we didnt make the finals: we will look harder at why instead of papering over cracks if we had have made it.

It is Mad Monday - Simmo get the Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Freo and Port tapes out.

Make the boys watch them over and over and over again and the fly them to GF to make them realise what they may have missed if they had closed those games out. My memories of WCE of recent years is the games we lose through an inability to close them out, kick straight or stop run ons.
