Positives and Negatives vs Port Adelaide

Is Shuey even that bad? My mate pointed out that his hammy wasn't iced after the game. Maybe they just pulled him because we were winning, he was tight and we wanted to use the injury sub.

I forgot to mention Rotham. He coughed up one goal but has really settled into our defence and has given a new lease of life to both Shep and Hurn. Solid defence but 19 touches, 11 marks and a kicking efficiency of 92%

Thought Shep played his game today. Was in the thick of things early on when we were dominating and he was either spoiling defence of on ground trying to win the ground ball for us. 21 touches, 13 marks.

Mcgovern played really well but his bad kicking let him down big time

Apparently I'll have to explain the thought process in being frustrated at blowing percentage again :eyes:

For all the "Just be happy with the win", "I can't believe people are complaining.... so spoilt" campaigners.

We are happy. Stoked, but can also see a clear missed opportunity, and taking our foot off the throat isn't a good thing. Why shohld that ever be encouraged?

Nobody, and I mean nobody would say no to a 36 point win against the ladder leaders. You'd take that and be happy every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

But when you've kept sed ladder leaders to 2 goals for an entire half, have literally FLAT TRACK BULLIED the top team, you can be annoyed when we randomly call stumps.

It's not that they outscored us 9 goals to 6 in the second half. It's how they went about it and the intent our players played with after half time.

We went from animals going hard and dominating a seemingly "spud team" to taking our foot off the throttle completely and changing our gamestyle.

We'd Chip it around in circles for 5 mins frustrating the crowd. A switch is great, go ahead, but when you've opened them up on the far side, have the free player ahead on the outer wing (Redden usually) only to turn back and kick it into defense again, it pisses people off.

We stopped playing the game which dominated them for a half and, almost like we were instructed, killed all the free flowing ball movement. Why?

No doubt a large part of that is due to, as Simmo says, a proud club like Port coming out firing, but I'm inclined to believe it's on us more than them.

It's not good for your team when you let in a raft of easy spud goals from elementary turnovers or skill errors. Whether you're down by 10 goals or up by 10 goals.

McGovern's 2 turnovers which happened one after the other. * me dead. Standard McGovern too. First one biting off more than his skills allow, the second from laziness.

Chip it around in defense for 5 mins, ignore free players forward of the ball that you've freed up, chip it backwards to Nelson who subsequently turns it directly over like a spud... frustrating.

We COULD have kept it going. We still won clearances, got our hands on the ball, had the opportunity to get field position and inside 50.... we just chose not to.

Got too cute. Too lazy. Too complacent. Game was over, the players cruised and dropped the intensity rather than finishing the game off the way they started.

I'm happy with a 6 goal win but I'm not celebrating our second half, that's for sure. Got outscored and outplayed, and it was by our own doing, not Port IMO.

We didn't play 4 quarters tonight, we dominated 2 and got outplayed to a lesser extent in 2

Now it's high time I deleted my account.

cracking win against a genuine top 4 contender.
JK, the King and Oallen all played well up forward.
Barrass in AA mode.

-
conceding a couple of late goals including from a tiggy touchwood free.
Shuey hamstring
The feigned enthusiasm from the commentary team calling the game from a bunker in Melbourne. In particular old mate Darcy.

Maybe they are the top team because they are able to fight back after being decimated early? Good teams scoring against us doesn't always mean have shat the bed, sometimes it means the other team are showing why they are a good team.

Yeah spot on beets.

But watching it live i don't believe that was really the case at all. Like I said, we still were on top in clearances, still won plenty of the footy. Still controlled the game basically.

It's not like they came out with wild intensity we couldn't match in the second half and just took it up us.

It was everything we did after we'd already won the footy which was the frustrating part for mine.

They got got their score from our s**t ball movement, turnovers, lack of pressure and intent. Not their own slick skills. Although they did kick well on goal.

We went from a game where people were saying Hinkley would be eating a sandwich in the box, to a game where we were up 50 at half time.

I understand being frustrated we didn’t kick on and turn in something historic. Everybody wants to win by 20 goals. It’s simply not reasonable to expect, in professional sport, that the team you support will just dominate every single moment of every single game. If every team that was up by 50 at half time won by 100 at full time, why not just call off the game?

Nobody is saying wanting more is bad. Nobody is saying percentage might not be important. But the tone on the board tonight wasn’t so much “nice win though that’s a good opportunity missed” but more of a “this is typical West Coast laziness. Of course we’ve won, but what about the percentage.”

We absolutely flogged one of the best sides in footy, destroying them in the very contested footy they specialise in and we lament. It was hand waved away by many because we were in such control by half time everyone got bored and turned their attention elsewhere.

The mood on the board if we’d ticked away, winning each quarter by two goals and coming away with a good solid eight goal win, the worm always slowly creeping up, would be way better than it is now. That’s very weird to me, given we have now seen that the 2021 Eagles’ best footy is still overwhelming and relentless, which seems like the bigger story.

No idea if it's been discussed or not, but just noticed that unused medical subs still get counted as a game played for those players?
It's listed on the Eagles website as such, so Jones in round 1 and Ah Chee in round 2 who didn't get subbed on has a game added to their tally.
Surely this can't be official?
If it is, an uncapped player could be an unused medical sub and be considered to have made their debut?

Sadly this is true

I'm actually less concerned about the percentage as I am with our teams drop off. It wasn't a 4 quarter performance, which is what any coach/fan wants.

Percentage aside I don't like seeing us play poorly, by our own doing, regardless of what game we're in or if we're winning or losing.

That's my takeaway anyway. We got the 4 points playing one champagne half of footy, which was thankfully enough.

I wasn't in the gameday thread so haven't really payed attention to the board mood or how many tantys got thrown.

Has already happened this season. Hawks had three debutants in Round 1. Two of them played, one sat in a tracksuit all day.

Ludicrous.

FOLD THE CLUB

and by club i mean norf

Im just fucxxxg pissed off that i arrived at a cattle station tonight too late to set up good internet comms so went into the mess to watch - and there was a loudmouth who DID NOT STFU FOR MORE THAN A COUPLE OF SECONDS AT A TIME.

I watched a half - and was gritting my teeth - after half time i started counting the seconds in between his fuxxxxg absolute drivel running commentary on the game and his stupid fuxxxxxg hick inbred life and calling josh kennedy jack , then arguing with people that his name us actually john and jack is short for john - 6 seconds was the record!!!

I sh*t you not this c}#% was a dead set moron - comments like “look at that sh*t kick, useless”

Im like “it went straight to kennedy mate”

Halfway through the third quarter i got up and walked out before the kranky made me do regret thing.
So................did you enjoy the game??
Honestly sounds like watching the game with me old man who is an Eagles die hard but has only just in recent years warmed to NicNat and Darling. "Bloody Useless" was a common term.

I sit high up in level 5 and it really shocked me how much brander looked like Yeo tonight. Do we dare dream?

Clearly you're not obsessed.

Brander did however look sexy AF in the black boots. I'm putting his career best game tonight down to the fact he wore those.

Buzz cut, black boots. Basically he thinks it's time to cut the s**t.
