Autopsy Positives and Negatives vs Richmond

I actually think that game was a massive positive. Everything was stacked against us:
* Richmond in their sixth consecutive game at the MCG.
* Against a team that are wet weather specialists.
* Some questionable umpiring decisions.
* A man down on the bench.
* In weather that basically neutralises our game style.

Despite all that, we only lost by six points - we would've been smashed if this was played earlier in the year.

Look at the first quarter, and you'll see what would've happened if the rain didn't come. Unfortunately for Richmond, the GF isn't played on a wet day.

The Umps shouldn't be favouring anybody - they should just pay then where applicable and stay consistent throughout the game. Wishful thinking I know, but one day it may happen. 🤔
Yeah true but with the recent eastern state coaches whining about our “rub” at Optus the umpires have done an over correction and are giving us nothing lately at home.

Would've loved to see Simpson throw Nelson on Martin. Needed someone with a little bit of C*** about themselves just to shut him down.

Instead we watched him just clear out it out of the middle with Edwards all afternoon.

Adding to this, when Hutchings isn't tagging (heard from the commentary he was focusing on Lambert) he's not best 22 imo, I understand he was injured today but this is based on previous weeks' performances.
Simmo asleep at the wheel again? Yes this should have been addressed - it's as if Simmo thinks our game style will always get us over the line, no matter the conditions.

This is why I always scoff when people in trading threads question whether we could possibly squeeze this or that A grade midfielder.

These two had great finals series last year but they’re not reliably good enough unfortunately

You do realise Sheed is having a career best season thus year, right? I'm not sure you can really say that about him anymore. Sure, he's been down the past couple weeks, but overall, he's been fantastic this year.

And let's not forget the fact he literally won us a GF off his own boot.

If someone had told you at the start of the day that we'll be a player down for a half, in pouring rain, Shuey, Barrass and Kennedy will be poor, Dusty will run loose with 35 touches and a goal, Houli will have 34, and there'll only be a straight kick in it, would you not have taken it?

Positives:
-1st quarter
-Cripps finishing
-pressure in 4th quarter
-Rotham's attack and composure
-clearance work picked up in 4th quarter

Negatives:
-Kennedy giving away 3 frees, and getting beaten at the majority of contests
-being outcoached for large parts of game
-the many uncharacteristic blunders that led directly to goals
-got outrucked pretty badly
-getting smashed in clearances for parts of the game

Despite a relatively sub-par game for the majority, our boys stood up and fought hard. There's nothing like a close loss to a big rival to fuel the fire inside. Round 22 last year we lost at home to Melbourne, look how we responded.

What a crock of ........

How much intercepting was there today?

Tigers ran at us and surged the ball forward and then got behind us.

If you think Schofield would have made the difference your dreaming. And we lost a mid in Hutchings by half time.
BUT blind Freddy knew that was how Richmond would play the game - what was more puzzling is that the coaching panel didn't put things in place to try and nullify this - eg letting Martin wander free most of the day.

Negatives:
- Hutchings' injury
- The sheer volume of uncharacteristic brain fades

Positives:
- Awesome contest
- Our best footy is the best footy in the AFL
- Despite how poor we were for so much of the game, we hung around right to the end
- I feel like we were intentionally holding back in a few areas, to keep options up our sleeves for the finals
- There were a LOT of teachable moments
- My belief in this team's flag-worthiness increased slightly despite the result

Umpires determined to pull Richmond over the line.
If anything they helped keep us in the contest IMO. Sure we copped some soft ones, but I thought the Tiges copped significantly more.

The only thing I can think of is that he wants that card up his sleeve if we meet the Tigers again.

Blind Freddie knew that Yeo needed to tag Martin in this game. The fact that we specifically didnt do that, to me, means that Simmo wanted to try some other setup.

In the post match he did try Yeo but its hard when your other mids are getting beaten. With Sheed, Redden and Shuey having bad days if Yeo goes defensive how are we ever going to get the ball going forward?

Yeah but from the sounds of it, in the first quarter we were flying and Yeo still wasnt tagging him. That would have been the perfect opportunity to stick up his arse and make him drop his head for the remainder of the game. If theres one knock on Dusty's game its that he goes to sh*t when he's frustrated.

Instead we just let Martin play himself into the game and do what he wanted to at the stoppages. Baffling stuff unless Simmo wanted to conserve some ammo.

Negative: Shuey and barrass did not want to play the game today. Brain fades all around. Sheed, well, shocking couple of weeks. Not sorta of games you want of one of your premier midfielders.

Positive: our percentage didn’t take much of a hit. Cripps is awesome.

I can see the AFL backflipping on the GMHBA Stadium decision if it ends up:

2: Geel
3: WCE

Someone brought up a great point the other day, if the AFL let the cats have a GMHBA final suddenly Etihad tenants will request home finals at their home ground too. The AFL would open up a can of worms as they say. Otherwise I'd agree.

Whats the deal with Sheppard?

Also I'm happy Simmo didn't tag Martin as this is something we have up our sleeve if we meet again. Also if Nic Nat plays 50% of that game we win.
