Review Positives and Negatives vs Swans

As far as I'm concerned the MRP will be doing to Kennedy what Simmo should have done several weeks ago, so that's not too much of a negative.

McGinnity, positive or negative that he was one of our best? I'm not sure. I quite like him, shows some guts and determination, and it's not like his skills are much worse than half our players.

EMac just continues to dominate.

We are flimsy and weak.

Only against the Eagles do teams break records, so yeah, MASSIVE negative. We need to get harder.

Possitives?
Emac. Lycett looks like he really really wants to be there, and after Coxs' effort, bloody well should be.

Simmo made several great points one was a +ve our spirited endeavour the other was a -ve our work rate. a very astute observation. I wonder how many players that don't now how to work the right way (regardless of effort) can be taught to do so and how many will go. He clearly made the point that the list will change.

One of his first interviews when joining the club - he said he wanted to find out what football intelligence our players have. I suspect he now knows many don't have much.

At this risk of upsetting poor old royal eagle I should point out that we have wasted many first round draft picks on dumb players and woodhouse led the charge.

  • Imminent consequences of Mackenzie's shutdown job on Buddy. In games where a superstar forward is well beaten, the media will find ways to scrutinise the defender's tactics (e.g. Caff on Cotch) and this will result in umpires changing their interpretations. Prepare yourselves for more free kicks to be paid against Mackenzie in the future.

So much this, especially considering that it was the $10 mill poster boy...

Longmuire wasn't happy after the game, no doubt Gil will be getting a call today...

It's not really a surprise our midfield got run over in the last quarter.
Priddis was the only one who could get down and dirty, win the contested ball for us at the coal face.

It was 3 on 1, he did a damn good job considering.
He eventually ran out of steam carrying the (inside) midfield on his shoulders on a wet, miserable day.

Unfortunately he is our best mid, weather we like it or not. If he was even 3rd best mid, we'd be a bloody good team IMO.

Positives
Mackenzie-Another great performance
Sheppard/Ellis some good stuff
Lycett-Some great ruckwork, some great leaps
McGinnity's 1%rs

Negatives
Our eyes lit up as soon as the first drop of moisture came into sight on Sunday. Now we have a legitimate excuse to hack and slash, to bomb it long etc lol
Contested possesions......
Midfield dominated again
Players with pace didnt care for using it

+
They showed the 2006 grand final (highlights) on TV.
Cox was really good and mobile that year.

-
They showed the 2005 grand final before that. Pay the ****ing free umpire! Two defenders aren't even looking at the ball!
Cox is pretty run of the mill now, and Lycett showed him up.

Thanks champ, couldn't work it out. Last year he was everywhere, doing it all

I think because he had a good year teams are paying more attention to him. He is still a skilful player but sadly he is not impacting games this year. If we can get some bigger bodies in the middle he may be able to get more of the ball and run the lines.

Seems a few people are ultra-negative, we were never going to beat Sydney, they'll win the premiership and given the conditions I thought we actually did very well.

We were hard at the ball and I thought we had some good mids for once - Shuey, Gaff, Rosa, Priddis contributed, Priddis really got us going early, but fell away (think he copped a tag haha). Wellingham was soft as butter and Masten and Hutchings were a bit patchy.

Our backs were very good, despite them missing a lot of shots, we didn't let too many easy one's in and prevented their mids from having easy entries or shots on goal, save you Gaff not manning up McGylnn.

Forwards weren't great, missing a few easy shots, not taking shots when they could, very fumbly and not leading smart.
Although the biggest negative was the passing into 50 - so the mids will need to be held accountable for that one.
We almost picked out their players, but truth be told, their not the #1 defence in league for nothing, you could see how well they structured up down back, something we could definitely learn, they're backs are no more talented than ours, they just work together really well.

I think Darling needs a few weeks off just to rest up his body, he's hardly had a break in his first 4 years and I think now is the time to give him a spell.

Lycett was exceptional, took him a half to understand how to catch a wet ball, but his ability to impact and get to contests was pleasing and his rucking magnificent - he leaped higher than NN a few times - MUST KEEP!

I was mostly quite happy with the game, we got blown away in the end, but keeping a lot of their stars - Jack, Kennedy, Franklin etc to minimal impact is a positive. McGinnity would be a star player if we were still playing 80s football, can't fault his attack on the ball.

Like all of the great teams, even if their stars are having an off day then there is another group of players willing to step up and have an impact. We on the other hand rely on a few spuds as our top liners and if they are having an off day then we literately have no-one that can step up and perform. Unlike Woosha, Simmo has correctly identified that flexibility is the key to sustained success, now we just need the cattle to back it up.

Clearly, wet weather footy is beneath the Gov. Doesn't suit his overhead marking style. I did like his physicality early but.

Flycett is a bit of a mudlark though. Sure, he made some errors, but for a big bloke he did very well in the wet I thought. That mark he took in the third(?) off their kick-in was the first kick-in mark (from our kick-in or an oppositon's) that i can recall one of our ruckmen taking in months. Pity he kicked it to the man on the mark though .

I would have enjoyed the game much more I think if he were teamed with Nicnat than Cox.

one positive, i suppose, was that the effort from the players was good and we only lost due to an inept coaching department
Sack the lot of 'em.

Start with Simmo then work our way through.

I am sure that Simmo is telling the players to not put their head over the ball, make sure that their work rate is at 75% and to keep our DE to bottom of the ladder lows. Priddis is doing exactly what Simmo is telling him to do, to make sure that every kick goes 30m (15 up and 15 down) in a helicopter fashion. Also, to ensure that every hand ball ends up at either a team mate under pressure, or at his feet.

I am also sure that Simmo is telling the mids to kick it as high as possible into the forward line, so our key forwards can be manned up by 3-4 defenders to spoil the ball.

Yep, time to go Simmo

Not sure this was overly obvious but I found the biggest positive was when Sydney moved forward in the 3rd Quarter they chose not to kick to a one on one Franklin v Emac when they were alone in their 50. I was yelling "You're paying the guy 1 million bucks and you aren't going to back him one on one with anyone?"

Do I REALLY have to say this every week after a loss, it's not Simmos fault he's been saddled with Wooshas dud, dumb decision making, poorly skilled, pea hearted, spud of a midfield.

Give him a couple years at least so he can bring in and play the players HE wants, Geeze

We had 173 contested possessions, not that far behind the Swans really.
