Anyone think we’d be 2nd with this new look squad?

Early days but I’m enjoying it. :D

We haven't been so dominate since 05-06, not saying we are going to reach the same heights however if the confidence remains anything can happen.

+ Masten - played a very good game. 2 goals; almost kicked 3. Ran extremely hard both offensively and defensively.
+ Yeo - shows his majesty in the midfield. Some games he looks horrid in the guts; was a terrific game from him today
+ Gaff - typical work horse performance.
+ Darling - Absolutely dominant. Has taken that big step forward everyone has been expecting for the last 4-5 years. Not kicking the huge bags of goals but playing his role as a monster CHF perfectly.
+ McGovern - Had a shocker of a season thus far; reedemed himself by far. Was the rock upon which the Eagles defense stand.
+ Cripps - terrific gut running; heavily rewarded with 4 goals
+ Sheed - First 3 quarters was a bit quiet; but an absolute monster of a 4th with 12 disposals or thereabouts. Tank has definitely improved; looks like he covered a ton of ground.
+ Venna's first 3 quarters
+ JK kicking 5.
+ Barrass - defensively not as potent as McGovern; but he's almost as good as him.

- Venables injury. Yes he kicked 3/4 goals 1-2 weeks back; but I felt this was his breakout game. Some of the things he does only a handful of AFL players in the league can do. Hope it's not serious; but he was in a ton of pain.
- Turnovers - some really dumb decision making. Jetta; Nelson; Cripps comes to mind as 3 shocking turnovers. Need to do better against better teams
- Redden - Has been overtaken by the other midfielders - had the potential to be a top 3 mid in our team; he's maybe in the top 10 now. Really disappointing thus far.

Love the start to the season, got a real 2015 feel about it... but the injuries are a ******* buzzkill. Every day last week I clicked into the Liam Ryan thread hoping to see an article saying they mixed up his scans with someone else and he'd be back in straight away, but alas... now Venables too. Can't take a trick. Poor guy was really building into some form too, was having a ripper game tonight.

Daniel Venables injury sucks two good quick young players out with Liam Ryan

I would seriously consider Jack Petruccelle as a like for like replacement

His form hasnt been great but feel he could step into same roles as DV and offer some great pace
and tackling and good overhead marking

Beat Thompson as well.

+ Barrass - defensively not as potent as McGovern; but he's almost as good as him.

I think you're being extremely generous here.

+ JK back, JD in career best form, Naitanui killing it, Rioli fit and looks decent, Sheed shrugging tackles now, team looks far quicker, hungrier and more dangerous than last year.

- Venner's ankle. Had a fiver on Masten to get 30 touches and LeCras to kick 3 at $61. C'mon, you guys couldn't feed him one more flat track goal in his 200th game? Dicks.

So many positives.

Gaff and Masten - There ability to get into space is incredible, both on defence and on offence. I've noticed this year that Masten always appears in the top 2 under the GPS statistics for "KMs Covered at speed" and "Average speed in defence" which is a really positive sign that he's working backwards to fill holes and he's working hard to do it. Gaff is almost untaggable with his bility to cover ground, he is such a smart footballer, only Scully would be able to match him for running power and he's a freak! Both these guys are hitting the scoreboard as well.

It's weird that Gaff putting on size and rotating through the middle he is showing his class, but for the coaches and Masten to take the initiative (not sure whose idea it was) to drop 4kg and stop his rotation through the middle and just let him run has also worked wonders. As long as he goes when it's there in dispute I'll be happy. He was way better at getting his hands out from the tackle today and didn't look panicked in close. Took a few almost contested grabs.

Shuey & Sheed - Our clearance specialists. Sheed in particular at getting his hands free and getting good quality movement from the centre was big, Priddis like in his strength but also using it much better going forward. Not as good as Shuey however, who is always a lock for some goal assists, I just wish he didn't always try get the assist, there were two occasions today he was well within his rights to have a ping, instead he wasted two kicks for no reason.

Rioli & Lecras - My favourite Lecras moment was the HTB tackle, as well as his spoil in the F50. He almost had another HTB but the player just got the hands free. You can see he will accelerate as the player turns their back, and he looks a step quicker than he has before. Rioli started poorly but worked into the game well and was down the back end on a few uncontested marks helping relieve the pressure of the defenders. He has some serious talent and can probably improve more with another injury free season/pre-season.

Gov - Brilliant game, after an early dropped mark he just turned it on, he read it well and timed his jumps perfectly. I disliked the amount he decided to go backwards, it was stagnant movement and I'm not sure if it was due to the injury, or just the team plan to get it to Hurn and Jetta?

Yeo - Great game, love watching him play because he seems so much more mature now.

JK & Darling - I was very worried that JK's return might spoil Darling's good form but that wasn't the case, I actually thought Darling was the better of the two, leading up the ground and taking some awesome grabs. He is so strong over the ball now and he's a very good handballer as well.

As for JK, he just draws a crowd and makes the defenders panic, he created goals for everyone just by being present. A lazy 5 goals, but the opposition didn't put up much fight and they gave away some frees.

Positives
+Shannon Hurn: in career best form, on track for an AA you'd think
+Shepard: As above, and an AA nod on the cards perhaps
+Chris Masten: Come on down son, 4 great games in a row. Besides one absolute shocker of a smothered kick he was outstanding, potentially his best ever game as an Eagle
+JK: a great confidence booster game, 2 gimmi goals but otherwise good. Dropped too many marks that he'd usually take though
+Barass: had a better game that the Gov imo, looking more and more at home down there
+Gov: Hopefully got some confidence, back in form
++Yeo: Majestic, that running action is more like gliding. What a quality player, hopefully lasts weeks 3 quarters was just cobwebs.
+++Darling: Has taken his game to a whole new level, and it was already good before. Found a toughness I didn't think he had in him. Kudos

Negatives
-Redden: Defensively was ok, but needs to find more of the footy
-Injuries
-My dream team with Lycett as ruck (although Lycett was pretty good generally)

According to Simmo he was about to go back on, he was not on cruthes or limping after the game so fingers crossed

+ Flat tracking a team feels good man, feels good. Been too long.

+ Ruck dominance continues against higher quality opposition. First hands to ball, even if we weren't going to advantage as often tonight. Losing clearances is nothing in our current setup, we let them leave under pressure and gobble it up on intercept. Lycett and Naitanui both productive around ground.

+ Small defenders being badarse. Shep, Duggan, Nelson, Jetta is a great mix. I feel pretty good about taking on small forwards this year, I dunno when the last time that was.

- Someone should make a highlight clip of Gov seeming to go down with a horribly painful injury mid-match, right before jumping to take a grab within the next minute. And make him watch it every morning.
