General comment.
We desperately needed to pick 2 tall defenders against the Eagles. Not sure if there are any on the list ready to go, but isn't' O'Rielly a KPP?
The cupboard is bare. Dillon O'Reilly is the same height as Taylin Duman (193cm) and 4 kgs lighter. Duman has a better tank because of the extra AFL preseasons - bringing O'Reilly in will not fix the height problem we have. People have been calling for Tobe Watson (and I really rate Tobe as a half-back) as a solution to our KPD issues, but he is only 190cms. If anyone watched Peel last year they would not be advocating for Meek to play back either, he would get absolutely slaughtered. Tabs has been tried back but was not exactly a raging success.

Out KPD strength is languishing on the sidelines without any real prospect of any of them returning in the short term.

Oh dear. Seems like we're in a pickle.

Please. Who gives a rats about the WC?

Surely there's no need to sully these pages with mentions of the WC unless absolutely necessary.

It’s necessary. They are our local benchmark in a national competition. Over the last 25yrs we have shared the same opportunities and challenges, yet we consistently fall short of what they achieve. That’s not bad luck, media, umpires or Illuminati. It’s governance and decision making.

It ain't necessary. There are obvious differences in how both clubs set up. Worth ejumakatin on that score. But any other club can be the benchmark as far as rehab and S&C.

It’s 25 years since we were set up and over 30 years since they were set up. At what point do those differences become a non issue? Will we still be talking about them in 2030? 2040?
They are also the best benchmark for S&C given our identical travel and rehab requirements each season as opposed to Victorian clubs, some of whose players can walk from their homes to away matches at the MCG (Eg Houli at Richmond for one).

It starts at the top.

Heres their board https://www.westcoasteagles.com.au/club/board

Heres ours https://www.fremantlefc.com.au/club/our-people

You can tell from the board down they want a premiership.

Do you think our board is elite?

I was going to mention that, anyone at the game can tell me what Tuckers role was? It certainly wasn't in the midfield where he has excelled this season, seems he was pushed to a forward flank which is the death of any midfielder.

Negative, Walters getting most of his touches in the back half. We have midfield depth and he is a top 2 small forward in the game, by all means play midfield at centre bounces and on the wings but when he is taking the mark from the kick-out we are wasting a great talent.
Yes please! Walters getting handball receives off half back was Eagles plan. He’s dangerous around the inside 50. We have enough talent to put in the middle for him to be offensively positioned, rather in the opposition’s back half.
It didn’t help that Tucker, Mundy and Acres had shockers. Consistently is key.

I don’t see why o’reilly and Watson were drafted in the first place. We have so many mid sized backs but not enough key position. Also had nhyuis on the list last year as another mid back, so even less reason to load up in this area

Lighter than Duman? Looks are very deceiving then. Are you sure about that?

Them's Weags talking points, but the comment was the clubs had the same oppotunities & challenges (which is patently untrue), so that's where that one line about the set-ups came from.

But 25 years is a blip, given you can have the core of a squad for 10 years give or take. They were given a virtual state side to start, which got the two premierships. You can feed off that for 5-10 years too with trading premiership players at a higher premium than their actual worth. Freo was set-up to hobble the WC and the VFL was keen on not repeating the mistake they made with having a WA state squad. Which do you think is an easier list management task? Topping up an already strong squad or restructuring one altogether?

Anyways, tis but a side issue. If you were aiming at an elite S&C you'd want to be casting as wide a net as possible when looking for examples, instead of fawning about them up the road. The S&C department of Brisvegas seem to be doing it the best at the moment. They've turned it around relatively quickly too and do a fair bit of travel. The Hawks & Port have had their moments and more over the years. While Melbourne & Tigers have also focused on changing up previously poor injury outcomes with some success.

He had one touch inside the forward 50 and we can all remember it. Every single coach in the afl would be thankful when they see him getting the ball in the back half.

Going from the club website - might not be current? He may have put a few Kegs on but he's certainly still very easily beaten in the match sims I watched. You are right though, he does look "bigger" than Taylin, but I guess that's proof of the old saying "muscle weighs heavier than fat".

Positives
- Michael Frederick. Easily the biggest positive to come out of that game, he looked good and I'd say he was our best player, the only one to play consistently good footy for the whole 4 quarters.
- Taberner's contested marking, probably the best behind Fyfe and Lobb in that department
- The first quarter

Negatives
- Our defenders are under way too much pressure all the time and we haven't got the legs down there to compete. Obviously we're missing about 5 of our back 6 but you'd expect some heart at least from the guys we had. Ryan did some good things and Cox had small bright spots, he just wasn't good enough to keep up with Kennedy and Darling.
- Our midfield is absolutely dreadful, can't win any clearances, can't kick it properly and can't make a good contest of it, we got ****ing mauled.
- Taberner and Lobb's set shot kicking in the last. For **** sake two of the easiest shots you can have and you shank them like that? God I love Taberner and think he has all the capability in the world to be a great forward but he's just dumb with the footy.
- Taberner getting run down in the goal square, that's gonna get replayed for years to come, just go back and take the shot, he would have made it.
- Passengers, passengers and passengers. Colyer wasn't bad yesterday but he doesn't belong in the team. Bewley way too inconsistent, Schultz shit game after last week. Banfield is a WAFL level player and nothing more, we'd benefit from having McCarthy in the team over him.
- What the **** was that Aish? Been pretty good this season but he dishes up that shit? Gonna have to do better than that. Acres nowhere to be found either

Midfield got pumped. Got ran on in the second quarter and couldn’t get back into it. Eagles threw the cue in the rack after getting 20 points ahead. When we win clearances, it’s hard work. When we concede them though, it’s way too simple for experienced midfields. Has been the case in our losses. The defensive set up has been poor in the middle.

Seems more likely. Those numbers on the Freo website are often dodgy.
Maybe the weight of O'Reilly was when he was drafted. He looked a bit portly then .Coming back from injury I think.
But seeing him training in preseason, he certainly looked much bigger than Duman.

Season pretty much gone now, Jlo just needs to tune up the bottom 6.
Have a look at Youth and prepare
for next year.
I really don’t understand why we do not have a tagger, run with player?
As for a defensive forward?
Finished Barlow, DeBoer, Mayne, etc.
Clubs are kicking 60 points this year, how do you win kicking half
That amount?
Cerra, Brayshaw, Tucker, Walters are not elite run with players.
Serong is a kid, put Valente, Banfield, North, Blakely, someone who will sacrifice for the team.

Serong was sent to Tim Kelly for experience.
MMM Blakely sacrifice for the team!!!!!
Valene yet to get a run,North in the same boat. But we wont know about them until they do.
Banfield, that was his role with Ross, but but maybe Longmuir will run with the Collingwood style and not tag.

Out of interest, what makes their board elite and not ours? Both just seem like a random assortment of unpleasant millionaires and a cricket coach

I can't comment on the whole board, but our pres is a dud. Basically a rat cunning brickie that made a squillion ripping off the very people that should be Freo members by flogging them cookie cutter boxes that are losing them money before they take possession of them. He's a corporate joke with no strategic plan besides ripping off the punters.

WC won a flag taking out oppositions best mids, or in form, they used two rucks to stop Gawn, Grundy, and stopped
Sidebottom.
Yeo constantly takes Fyfe, Pies had Arguably one of the best midfields, So did the Cats in 08, sometimes you need somebody to get their hands dirty, tactics.
