Carlton is not playing like a bottom 8 side at the moment. They should have beaten Geelong, took it right up to Hawthorn and beat North (who has beaten all of the top 4 sides this year).

They're doing the minimum expected of a side with their experience.

There are a lot of players who are down on form and it is hard to say why. In someone like McPharlin's case he looks just about cooked, which is sad.

But Mundy looks slow, fumbly and reactive. Ibbotson ain't all he is cracked up to be on here - but he's had some good moments and he's doing just enough. Mayne is playing ordinary football, and it has gone on too long to ignore, thought he lifted in the last which is promising. Crowley no longer has that clamp style yet is still being watched by the umps.

Pearce has his moments of class blended in with utter dogshit. Tonight's match was in the dogshit basket.

By the same token, I thought Suban was good, Spurr did some nice things, Sandilands was excellent when it mattered.

Yeh, we've undoubtedly got an ugly mix of underdone players (McPharlin, Johnson and Ibbotson) combined with out of form players (Mundy, Mayne, Crowley), most of who were playing out of their skins this time last year. It's definitely hurting our ability to be so well drilled in defense/across the ground, but at times tonight I saw players who weren't sure of what to do. All of the talk throughout the preseason was that we had to find extra goals, and I'm worried we've taken too much away from what was essentially our best asset in the name of attack.

not enough manning up, nobody holding Judd (Judd was amazing), umpires were shit or just weird, looks like a few sore and tired players

we got 4 points, we won a close one, we can improve, was good to win for the Maslin family

Positives
Fyfe.
Winning even though we were rubbish.

Negatives
Danyle f...ing Pearce. Absolute spud.

Yeah I don't really understand the negativity. we have never quite clicked this year. as others have commented its largely about having too many underdone and out of form players at different times. we had a gutsy, impressive win tonight with 2 players down and Carlton on fire getting an armchair ride from the umps.
Ross in the press conference and MJ in his interview are under no illusions about how much better we have to get to be any sort of threat in September.
its all in front of us, lets see if they can light the fuse with 4 rounds to go.

Geez Fyfe and Barlow worked hard tonight. Fyfe is contested ball and clearances and Barlow with his run and providing a target. Not a thing went right for Danyle and Hilly looked very underdone.

Don't forget you also signed that spud of a guy Colin Sylvia, that's also a contributor, thank you for taking him off our hands.

Mayne and Crowley in particular are not even close to the players they were last year.

I was calm in this game, but absolutely lost it for the North match.

Should never have lost that one.
They looked to be doing the same show of sprayed chances in the last prior to Cameron Wood hitting Neale on the chest 25 m out.

Even the compulsory Danyle shank.

I'm hoping we can get it together in time. We aren't winning enough crucial contests to not cover the men so poorly. Too many times tonight we missed winning the ball cleanly and turned it over to an in-position Carlton.

Giving up contested marks between defensive fifty and the center cost us badly in the last two games. Our pressure game doesn't work when the team has to reset 60m up the ground three kicks in a row.

We need to force the sideways kick and short late kicks to contests, not letting a long kick to a leading tall get marked.

McPharlin needs to stick with his man to bring those balls to ground. A stoppage is as good as a turnover for us usually.

Murphy doesn't do his image of being a soft outside seagull much good flopping for free kicks like he does. Bryce Gibbs had more edge to him tonight.

Judd might be done after that ankle, 125kg crushing sideways outward like that... Jab it all you like, I think that's the end.

hulkhogan1 No worries. Tell me, how did Mitch Clark work out for you?
Not bad for 15 games, if he didn't get injured he would easily be our best player. Sylvia on another hand, been a dud to be brutally honest for his career. I've taken an interest in Freo ever since the Wiz went over to you guys, but signing Colin has me still to this day baffled...

Judd slapped Mundy around all night. Took front position at clearances, almost without fail. Mundy let him. Mundy was playing defensive side, but wasn't fighting hard enough to spoil the many first possessions that Judd got as a result.

Umpire 3 was an utter w@nker. Count the frees that he provided in the Blue's favour. Particularly the 50:50s in useful positions.

Glad we won... but it was not the display that a top 4 contender should be providing on their home deck.

So was it over $100,000 a game by the end?

If Justin Longmuir wasn't injured he could be our most important player too.

Sadly yes.

Injuries are a c*nt. Schwarz could've been anything.

Guys looked pumped after that win and really galvanised. Reckon that might be the uplift they need to take them forward for the rest of the season.

Well, that's the hope, isn't it [TM Ross].

Tonight put me in mind of another game where we wobbled very unconvincingly to victory thanks to a last minute goal kicked by a diminutive man - Round 5, 2013 against Richmond. You would never have bet on us making the GF after that, but that game was the start of our ascent and marked a definite turning point for the player group.

Lightning doesn't strike twice, but the hope is that just getting that 4 points can restart the battery somewhat.
