Well, go back and watch his game. It's not all about stats. He ran to create contest, ran to space. It's not always about shots at goal.
he did that great punch in front of Carlton's goals, in the dying seconds...that was all he needed to do to get us over the line :)

I'm still in a shit mood after a pretty average performance so i won't be going real positive here.

Positive:
FYFE FYFE FYFE
Ballantynes 4th quarter
Ibbotsons return, thought he was very good.
Stephen Hills effort to make a positive after being shut down heavily.

Negatives:
Teams learning how to counter our key defenders, they are seperating them very well and nullifying our 3rd man up game.
As a symptom of the above i now nominate:
- Luke McPharlin looks cooked
- Michael Johnson is playing pretty average football
Aaron Sandilands marking, was awful last night.
Danyle Pearces kicking AGAIN
Lee Spurrs decision making
Thought we got killed in the clearances when Zac was in there.

One more thing.

6.10pm game time is ridiculous.
Being in SA its 7.40pm so i'm happy with that but being 6.10pm local must have cost us soem crowd last night surely.
Thought 35k was very disappointing when you compare to some other Thursday night games.

Positives

A win is a win, especially under some significant adversity.
Fyfe, I tell myself I can't keep talking this guy up, then he goes and kills the last qtr like a captain. Being the sexiest man alive also probably helps him.
Barlow, its funny every time I talk to people about the game they (and I) always say Barlow's been quiet, only to find he has had 25 and kicked 2 goals - he was very good last night.
Sonson is CLOSE.

Negatives

I told a lie to an umpire last night, I told Leigh Fisher I knew where he lived, and I actually don't. Does anyone know his address so I can deliver him a nice little package?
Injuries, but if Pav is alright then I guess it isn't too bad we can cover Tendai's run with Sheridan or maybe DeBoer do the role & not to be too worse off.

negative - the overreactionaries in this thread. Mundy has had a good year. granted his previous week was subpar. I thought Mcpharlin showed better glimpses this week. He has always had a ugy running gait, but dont let that stop the knockers writing off the champ. Our turnovers and centre clearance work was uncharacteristic. We are a team that needs its hardhats but we are looking like a 5th place finishing team. Still living in hope though

Was he #3?
There was a period in either the late 3rd or early 4th when he called about 3 in a row against us that was all awful.

I would like to give extra special mention to Michael Barlow.

Before Fyfe stepped up totally destroyed the last quarter, he was getting active and winning crucial ball in the third to slow Carlton down. Big part of why the side went into the last with a chance.

Positive. A grinding win over a seriously underrated Carlton who definitely showed up to play.
Winning with the midfield kicking 7,defender 1,small forward 3 goals and without a key forward kicking a score
Negative Leigh Fisher who turned out to be a low cheating scumbag out to get his revenge on Ross

Agreed. He took ten marks out in space, offering an option for kickers. Willing himself into space :)

Yeh #3, ex Stk player who Ross delisted in 2008 ; )
his best ever game for St Kilda was 2 weekends ago

Fyfe is getting better & better. How is that possible when he is so superb already?
Barlow is the blue collar in the midfield. Fantastic.
Neale fought back well.
Mayne was excellent, particularly after Pav went down.
Sutcliffe didn't have his best game, but there were a couple of times when his play was absolutely top shelf.
Sandi's game was quite good, except for his marking. Clarke's marking was better. Sandi's running spoil & follow up was a thing of beauty.
Another positive was keeping their dangerous 3 tall forwards relatively quiet.
Ballantyne has come a long way as a player & would challenge any in the team for most improved.

Negatives
the umps. Stevic wasn't as bad as Daglish, & Fisher was the worst.
the commentators. I pay good money for Foxtel & I have to put up with basil the snoz?!!!!
when he was prattling on about the west coast pocket, I decided to mute the tv. I don't even do that for bwuth macavaney!!!!

Good teams win when they aren't playing well.

and here is one that many won't like:
by golly, Judd is a star! I know he isn't well liked on here, but I love watching brilliant players.

Positives
- got the 4 points with 2 on the bench for the 2nd half.
- McPharlin, Hill, Ibbo got through the game after long layoffs and will better for it. Always tough coming back.
- Ballaz responded with a good game.
- Fyfe is a GUN

Negatives
- Umpiring was very strange. Some decisions were incredibly bad. Murphy free, deliberate etc
- Commentary was very average from basil & the foxtel boys after the game.
Always saying it's good to see ballaz whacked & dribble like that.
- Pav getting concussion. 9 day layoff until Geelong game so he will be right.
- Sandi needs to take his clunks

Didn't see that last spoil just outside their goal square? You need to look at more than stats.

Wow so he had a spoil as well?

He wasn't horrible, but he wasn't exactly a shining beacon of hope either. I just find it hard to see how anyone could pick Mayne's game out as a positive from last night, he's definitely gone backwards since the derby.

Disagree, the amount of hard running and putting the ball carrier under pressure is underrated. I saw him regularly run back and forth in attacking 50 fifty when Carlton was kicking it out. He runs hard and applys pressure such that the resulting kick out of the 50 doesn't reach its desired target. His running patterns were also really good and I was bewildered when our guys didn't kick to him in space.

My knock on him is that he seems to have no confidence kicking for goal, usually passing it off to someone in attacking 50 instead of taking a shot.

He wasn't top 5 freo players but he defiantly wasn't bad as well.

There's a pretty wide range of performance between unsighted and a shining beacon of hope. I thought Mayne was important in providing a hit up lead to allow us to exit the D50, provided good pressure and used the ball pretty well, in addition to making a key spoil at full back to ensure we won the game.

Maybe my expectations are too low, but I can definitely understand Yoong singling out Mayne as a positive.

Hey we are 9-1 the last 10 weeks. We are going alright. Bye this weekend then Hit the hawks with everything . Gotta make this year count.
