Positives/Negatives

Positives:

1. Nick Stevens. What a game. Lead from the front, as was by far and away our best player.

2. Bryce Gibbs. His clearance work in that 3rd quarter was fantastic. He hits targets and makes the right decision almost every time he disposes by foot.

3. Kade Simpson. Just keeps getting alot of ball, and like Gibbs, hits targets. Also good to see him back himself to kick on his right side.

4. Richard Hadley. Did some nice things when he came onto the ground, and his poise and experience will be invaluable throughout the year

Negatives:

1. Marc Murphy. There is no bigger MM supporter on BF than me, but I thought he lacked any real hunger tonight, and almost looked to be just going through the motions.

2. Jordan Russell. Timid, and just not up to AFL standard. Make the most of your last year at Carlton

3. Overall disposal. I lost count of how many times we handballed the ball to a team-mate that was about to be tackled. Look up boys, and have some lateral vision FFS

On a pleasing note was that we fought it out after half time. Could have easily droppped our heads, and got belted again. Special mention to Kreuzer who got straight back up after that hit from Brown. Pity he couldn't convert the goal.

Stevens: Great game, led the team like a general ..still running hard at the final siren

Scotland: Usual hard running self ..his disposal was a highlight compared to his peers

Cloke: Very impressed with his game tonight ..lets hope he keeps it up.

Murphy: started badly but kept trying ..he'll be fine.

Wiggins: Always having a dip ..i wish some of the others had his desperation.

Gibbs: wonderful game ..he will be a star in our midfield for years to come .

Hadley: looked good ..just needs to maybe take a compass out there with him :D

Pheiffer had a dip ..poor disposal let him down .

Carazzo : trys hard but his decision making and disposal are pretty ordinary.

Kruezer looks the good ..he will only get better . The way he handled browns cheap shot was great for a kid his age . :thumbsu:

Jordan Russell was absolutely terrible ..real concerns that he just won't make it .

Jamison's disposal and decision making is still a worry and I hold my breath until the ball is in the hands of his teammate. I think I saw him do the same thing against Freo in SA and centre the ball back to the corridor.

Walker's pace will be a huge plus when he's back and firing, but we do need more run out of the middle and legspeed.

Russell was quiet and poor tonight, but he at least took a contested mark against the flow in the first half. /devil's advocate

JR needs to go in harder and show as much intensity as Armfield and Pfeiffer when they're not in possession.

Our skill level and run is still poor, but we improve with Judd back and as the team adjust to a new game plan. We're still two years behind Hawthorn who have played under Clarkson for that period, but there is finally light at the end of the tunnel after our second half where the players didn't let it turn into a bloodbath.

I was impressed with Bower's defensive efforts and run and he will only get better with more games.

Pleasing to see Grigg back himself in after our disastrous first quarter and nail a supergoal on the run like Lucas by taking short steps.

Great to see the young players lift after half time and Kreuzer show he will be a gun with his second efforts and mobility. A big man running down a mid like Hodge and forcing the ball out of bounds will only lift the team when he's ready to that for four quarters.

Hadley was terrific and will be a valuable acquisition when he gains some touch because he was understandably rusty.

People who say Gibbs is soft and not as good as Leuenberger, Selwood and Hansen have no idea.

Agreed, they don't seem to think sometimes:thumbsu:

You could see Fev getting frustrated early in the second, after he kept shouting for it long and it wasn't coming, it took him to go up the ground and kick quickly into the forward line. It may not have paid off but it showed what Fev wanted them to do. Good leadership by him imo. Thought he was really good despite his goal kicking

Positives:

Gibbs is silk.

Kreuz showed something and was impressed with how he moved. Has a very good frame and personally can see him being similar to Kosi in the marking department.

Hampson had the equal most hitouts which was pleasing to see.

Stevens racking up the ball. Lacking his usual polish but it will come.

Negatives:

We cannot play a high handball game - not at the moment any how. Skills and decision making are below par.

Jarrad Waite's inconsistency. His first half was horrid.

Marc Murphy hasn't been his usual self the past fortnight - don't know why because he was as polished as I've seen him in the praccy game in SA.

Positives:

Our young defenders - Grigg/Bower/Jamison, a few fumbles here and there, but did some nice things too. Grigg looks huge.

Gibbs - He's getting a central midfield role, he is slowly getting used to with the speed of the game.

Kruzer - A few fumbles, but he is super quick for a ruckman

3-4 guys teamed up on Campbell Brown

Negatives:

Too many sideway handballs in the 1st half, players are gonna need more time to get familiar with this new game plan.

Very poor Disposals and decision making.

Betts/Russell - Too soft

Lack of marks in our foward 50.

Marc Murphy - Hopefully he could get back on track in round 1.

would have to disagree with murphy in the negatives. got 30 touches and i thought was alright.

yeah but what did he do with them? His disposal was superb in his first year. It hasn't been the same since Craig Bradley became the skills coach.

Have queried AB's position in the team, but seeing us getting thrashed out of the centre square 2 weeks in a row seems to suggest that he will most definitely be needed this year.
Glad to see you coming around HBF - a handful of us have been saying this for months. The problem is that even Bentick isn't the answer long term - he's not going to get much better, it's just that there's no-one else. It's one of the reasons I wanted Masten with pick 3 before the Judd trade.

From the footage I've seen, we need to fast-track Joseph, and then recruit for that hard-nut, in-and-under type at year's end.

why do the coaches love russel so much?? i personally am not a fan of his, i dont so why players like blackwell dont get a game ahead of him. usually when blackers gets a run he doesn't play too bad of a game. i just would have thought with it being pre season ratts would have given a player like blackwell or any other player who is at the crossroads of their career a bit of a go. i dunno, its just that it annoys the shit out of me when i see russel get so much game time and do nothing and blackers has to work his butt off and still doesnt get noticed even when he dominates in the twos. oh well, maybe ratts will give blackers a go during the season and im sure he will dominate

One thing that stood out to me with Kruezer is how hard he hits the ball and takes it cleanly. A lot of young players are tentative to go in hard, he seemed to adapt pretty well.

I think he'll be a great player:thumbsu:

For the record in my opinion our best 5 players tonight were:
1. Stevens
2. Gibbs
3. Jamison
4. Simpson
5. Scotland

Positives (biggest 5)

1. Gibbs - was brilliant in the 3rd quarter especially. Unlike most players always makes good decisions and hits targets. Have always rated his inside ability and this showed 2night. Should start in the centre square round 1. Also really applies pressure the other way. had 7 tackles

2. Jamison - another great game. 10 yr fullback

3. Stevens - brilliant game. racked up the ball and unlike most used it well.

4. Hads - we looked much better with him in the middle. HAs class, a big body and great hands in and under. Confirmed to me that he is a def in the best 22 round 1.

5. Hammer - led the game in hitouts despit spending little of the 2nd half in the ruck. was a bit quiet around the ground though but is still our no.1 ruck

Negatives

1. general disposal - especially in the 1st half was horrific. Terrible decision making as well especially by hand. While I like the general idea of the game plan I thought it was executed poorly.

2. running and pressure - players really need to run harder both with the ball and without. guys aren't working hard to get into space to provide options like the hawks. Also pressure in the 1st half was terrible. We let the hawks run free

3. Murphy - I thought he did a lot better in the 2nd half but his disposal and decision making has been disapointing lately. For a supposed goal kicking midfielder he can't seem to convert like a class player should. very worrying. Even more frustrating because he does create opportunities for himself. Has kicked 1.10 in his last 3 games.

4. Russell - Useless

5. Fevola - needs to kick straight. deflates confidence of the teamwhen he misses.

FMD!

Positives:
- Fev and Cloke standing up for Kreuzer and giving it to that dirty sniper Brown
- Bower and Jammo
- Stevens and Hadley
- GIBBS, gonna be so flipping good i rkn
- Fevola, VERY impressed with his work effort today

Negatives:
- Russel
- SKILLS

Well put,yes murphy has lost that "hunger" for reasons unknown:confused:

Positives:

Gibbs. Tonight I finally saw why he will be a champion :thumbsu: His little 1% of sprinting to a contest just to make a spoil were brilliant.

Houlihan. Skill, skill and more skill. He is so cool under pressure and is one of the best users of the ball in our team IMO. Doesn't get a lot of credit where credit is due, but the way he hits players laces out on the chest is superb. Read the play well last night, while he might not have the speed he certainly makes up for it with vision and skill.

Jamison. Just reminds me of the old Sextons and Silvagnis.

Simpson. Lots of heart, lots of skill and speed and just wants to bleed for the jumper. He's a gutsy little fighter this one. :thumbsu:

Others that impressed me where Kruezer, Cloke at CHF, Waite's athleticism up the ground (CHF is where he hurts most IMO) and Sugar Shaun Hampson. :)

Negatives:
Murphy. Yes he got a lot of it, but he fumbled a lot and his skills were poor last night I thought. I'd rather someone get little of it, but use it well, instead of getting lots of it and using it poorly.

Stevens. Giving away stupid 50s in a game were umpires made me feel queasy.

Sam Mitchell. The tightness of this guys top is embarrassing...

Jordan Russell needs to stand up this year or it's see you later. I feel so much happier watching us with Cloke and Hampson and Kruezer as our big men, because they show a lot of heart. Austin needs to be nurtured. Bring back Bentick because we were smashed at the stoppages.

Over-use of the ball and lack of confidence were the two stand out disappointments for me. And the fact that... dare I say it... but did we seem to go to Fevola a lot last night again? I dont want another year where he's our only forward.

Hawks Have Their Way

12:05pm
24/2/08

Hawthorn look on top of the world after downing the up and coming Carlton outfit last night at the Telstra Dome. After a blistering start from the hawks, involving kicking the first eight goals in the game, including three supergoals. It wasn't until the 15:56 minute mark that Carlton finally posted a goal through a 50 metre kick from Simon Wiggins.

The Blues managed to close the half time Hawthorn lead of 52 points to 34 points by three quarter time thanks to assistance by both the wind and the umpires, but the super first quarter from the high flying Hawks was just too much to counter act, Hawthorn downing Carlton.

Despite the loss, it was Carlton's Blue Brigade that shon on the night.

While newly appointed Carlton captain Chris Judd watched from the sidelines, Vice-Captain Nick Stevens became the shining light on the field, racking up 35 possessions in a shortened NAB Cup match. Close behind Nick came former number one draftee Marc Murphy, posting 30 possessions despite his desposal not being as effective as we have seen in his earlier years.

Still on the topic of number one draftees, Bryce Gibbs and Matthew Kreuzer both lifted their game, with Bryce Gibbs playing in the centre and making a meal of his chance in the centre, four centre clearances in a row during the fourth quarter and 23 touches. Matty Kreuzer, after making his debut in AFL team colours last week in Carlton's triumph against Port Adelaide posted eight possessions, but his work off the ball being terrific.

Ryan Houlihan dismissed a lot of doubt about himself last night, attacking the ball and effectively using his disposals continuously.

Hawthorn: 4.9.13.103
Carlton: 4.3.15.69

Just a quick piece I notched up whilst bored:thumbsu:.

Honestly ! How could anyone give Houlihan a rap and then bag Stevens ?
Nick Stevens was our best player on the night ..his leadership was outstanding as was his hard running all game .

Positives:
- Simpson has HEART. Love this bloke.
- Bower looks good, decision making will improve, as it always does with experience.
- Fev, unfit, but kept trying.
- Gibbs & Stevens. Already said why during this thread.

Negatives:
- It took hawthorn to take the foot off the pedal for us to get our groove on. Need to come out ready to go, not let them kick 10 goals before we realise were playing a game.

- Handballing, way to much and the decision making was really poor. Reckon they handpassed it to somebody about to get tackled 5 or 6 times.
