A few guys debuted / made club debut and looked ok.
Besides that I have very little.

Find it very hard to name anyone who improved this season. Brander, Rotham, Jones and Nelson.... And even that lot is debatable.

Naitanui about the only established player who produced at a high level. Kennedy at a stretch maybe. The rest went backwards, due to form and injury.
Nelson? Improved mate you must be blind

It may be a blessing in disguise for west coast to be out of the finals because it is guaranteed that they will get pumped and a 1st round exit.

So the squad should spend time recovering, and setting up a brand new game plan for 2022. And i would be cleaning out the list full of dead wood like Tom Cole, and Jackson Nelson, Ainsworth and Dom sheed.
I think Cole should have been dropped not Rotham.

How many games has he played?
17.

But that the difference between sheppard and rotham.

One could be a 300 game player.

One still hasnt established himself after 5 years. History doesnt lie, if you arent playing well after 5 seasons and still making those mistakes, you may sere yourself out soon

West coast was the only side to finish in the bottom 8 of inside 50s and to win a premiership in the last 10 years. It show us how great our forwards and backline were to hold us for so long

Also how Simpson was able to develop a gameplan that emphasised our strengths while hiding the weaknesses to the extent we ... won a premiership.

Sheppard wasn't a particularly established player until 5-6 seasons in, especially for such a high draft pick.

Rotham goes alright I reckon. Prone to a few brain farts but I think the game plan has stifled his natural game somewhat, like so many of our players.

Im saying, this is a difference between a dynasty and a single premiership.

We had the talent to challenge for 4 to 5 years, but we settle for one.

We didnt adapt a game plan over the years to win multiple premierships, like geelong, richmond and hawks. We had won a premiership in 2017 which emphasized out strengths but over the next years when other teams diminished our strengths and emphasized our weaknesses we failed to adapt.

Collingwood made the mistake of picking bucks over malthouse in 2011 and that cost them years of dominance, look at their 2012 side.

Were a good club at the moment, but we have had chances to become great. We should have challenged between 2017-2022.

Just funny how Luke Shuey linking up at half back makes us a much more dangerous side than when Gaff or Sheed gets it at half back. Not only is he a much more skill full but he is also very proactive with ball in hand.

In a full midfield set up, im willing to see Shuey spend less time in the middle and more time on a wing or on a back flank.

Shuey bombing it over the zone onto Darlings chest stood out because you could count on one hand how many times this year we broke out of defense like that. Hurn used to do it all the time with 60 m drop punts. The other way to break zones was overlap run from behind the ball carrier and the likes of Jetta kicking 50m hay burners to players free in the corridor. Its hard to quantify how much our defense has sucked this year and its not just the leaking of goals. Its a stagnant mess.

If Shuey rotates anywhere it should be off a forward flank. He's got goals in him that we're not utilising right now.

Exactly, I’ve been saying him to defence for a while. When he gets in the defensive half, he is more likely than not to try and move the ball on quickly unlike the others. Think him rotating through should help out a bit

Think TK and Sheed can help out in that regards at HFF. We genuinely lack play makers in defence. Imo he brings more to the side in defence than he would resting forward. Mind you got Willie coming back that gives not provides us with another avenue to goals but also provides the team with creative ball use going forward(which Shuey would also bring at hff).

It's actually astounding how little time AFL clubs spend on developing the opposite foot kicking of their players. If Gaff and Sheed had the ability to kick up to say 35m on their right foot at a high level (skills that they have on their natural left foot) they would be so much better (inserting a pause here for jokes about how Langdon has mastered the 35m ability on his right foot).

Gaff and Sheed lack pace - so the ability for opposition to shut them down is exacerbated as they know where they will run to kick it, and they just shut down their left-foot outlet. I hope we work with LEdwards and other young mids coming through who aren't able to buy time and space via footspeed - to develop elite dual sided kicking so they can change direction as required and have outlets.

Sheed also can’t handball. He Moves is base (right) hand forward with the punch every time, it’s horrible to watch, barely hits targets and slow to execute.

100% thought his hamstring was going to fly off with the ball.

He's not alone there. We are one of the worst handballing teams in the comp (even if half of them just throw it...).

We need to spend some time on it as a team this preseason (maybe whilst running to get our fitness up also) as the inability to hit targets by hand from 3-4m away kills momentum. It's never quite that simple - but surely has to be part of the review.

A positive for me is that almost all our injured players returned prior to the season ending or are due back prior to preseason starting. Fingers crossed, everyone is ready to start preseason training and be in tip top shape come round 1 next year.

The question marks are over McGovern's hip and Duggan's knee.

/in before Allen and Darling have been playing injured and require major surgery.

They have but surgery is not a major risk. (Source - I guess)

I remember saying at the end of last year that we would be one year older and slower in 2021, so 9th is not a massive surprise. One thing you can't ignore though, is that we were absolutely gutted by injuries - there is no doubt in my mind that we were hit hardest of any club with injuries to our best players, and we were in an endless cycle of making sweeping changes and bringing unfit players into our team. There were patches on the weekend vs Brisbane where we saw the combo of NN, Shuey and Yeo at full flight and it reminded me of how good we can be.

So we are just getting another year older and slower, but I don't see a major list change coming - we just don't have enough quality young players waiting in the wings to step in. I expect another attempt at a refresh like 2017 where we brought in Ryan, Allen and Brander (plus Rioli getting regular time in 2018). We have made hay from top 30 draft picks, so wouldn't surprise me see a moderately big trade to pick up another (we currently have 10 and 29). That pick 10 will be absolutely critical for any near term success.

Without a fully fit Shuey and Yeo for most of the year meant our midfield lacked any punch - NN was the only player capable of imposing himself on the game. We desperately need those two fit, plus maybe a line-breaking mid prospect from the draft.

Other observations:
- Brander just doesn't seem to have it - can't kick left foot ,makes crucial mistakes time and again. If he can't or won't be traded, needs to be played as a key forward.
- Oscar Allen was not fit for the last half of the season - almost no impact
- We need to do something to stem the impact of quick turnovers, which we seem to more susceptible to than other clubs - can't put my finger on why - and it changes the momentum of games for us. I noticed on the weekend that we had players electing to get caught holding the ball rather than take a bad option.
- Gaff and Sheed throwing the ball on the boot doesn't seem to work - other clubs have torn us to shreds with quick handball and run rather than quick kicks - i think this will be the biggest change next year - a lot more handball.
- A lot will depend on whether our conditioning staff can eke another good year from our older players.......

The positive for me is the reality check of missing finals. We've known for ages that we need to make changes to gameplan, selection and conditioning but the club kept backing in the old way. I would've thought losing an elimination final last year would have done it, but it seems pretty clear that there's nowhere to hide now they've missed the 8. The shame of finishing 9th must burn too.

We started to see some changes to gameplan over the last two weeks, so clearly they've got the message. I'm excited to see what comes out next year.

If I look back over the season, there's only two games I might watch. 1. Our demolition of Port (the only top 8 team we beat all year) and 2. The Richmond comeback which was so much fun to attend live

This to me is the biggest positive of the season. It means the coach still have the players and leadership team on his side. This combined with in comparison to last year an 8 week longer preseason.

Get injury free and in some ripping shape and hopefully a couple of personnel and coaching appointment changes and we are still a shot. For 1 year at least.

I like the idea of Shuey having some time on The HBF. I was wondering if Jamaine had that capacity? He is reasonably athletic and his kicking to leading players is outstanding. Could he be another aggressive attack out of defence option?

If I was the Beagles coach I would be playing Jones off HB, he needs to learn the craft and he would benefit a great deal on accountability but more importantly he has the skills to break lines and hurt opposition off HB. Greatest spot on the ground to develop.
The problem at the Eagles is we have too many so called small forwards who are not developing because they are not given a chance to develop.
Throw Petch in a Back Pocket for 10 games and let him understand what it means to look after a player. How are our coaches missing these basic steps.

Frustrating Season injury wise to our top end talent certainly didn't help which ended up like a version of changing the deck chairs on the Titanic with 5 changes each week at the selection table.

Hopefully all the players below who struggled injury wise throughout the season can impact a lot more next year

Yeo
Shuey
McGovern
Barrass
Duggan
Kelly
Ryan
Hurn

Plus Rioli

And a new revamped Gameplan of course
