Richmond lost by 120 points in Round 23 last year to Sydney. Now look at them, Qualifying Final this Friday

I think our off-season for 2016-17 was fantastic at this stage I don't doubt our draft selections and our mature age recruits Lyons, Witts, hanley provided us with something when they played.

Another successful off season or 2 and the club will be contenders for the 8 again soon.

Sorry for intrusion.

Just wanted to offer a bit of support as this is a rough time for you guys not helped with the media putting the boot in.

I still believe you have the basis for a very good team. You took some great kids last year and you have some super talents already there.

Obviously the culture is not ideal. It's a shame the AFL can't just get an Alistair Clarkson and give him 5 years at $2,000,000 to get things sorted because I believe he would. Paul Roos would be a stop gap option but his game plan is old and he is not a believer in expansion.

Hopefully if they do get an untried guy he is the next Clarkson.

I hope you can get the right person because I believe if you do the talent will come through. You guys deserve a break.

Keep your heads up, this is the worst of it. Once you get through it you will bounce and when you bounce you will bounce hard.

Thanks but really the last thing on this earth I want right now is to be reminded that GWS exists.

Getting a bit tired of the accusations of a poor culture at the club. It's so 2014. We are probably working harder than any other club towards improving it. Our problems IMO are a lack of depth of experience / leadership, resilience and most of all confidence. Our boys just lack that confidence because of continued poor results.
If we were winning more no one would question our "culture". In footy it's a throw away term used like "racist" is in general society to shut down a discussion
GWS have had thugs and drug cheats but no one questions their culture. If they were 17th on the ladder however...

Understand and apologise if what I wrote offended, certainly not the intention.

For me it was just the last few games when the coach changed the players didn't appear to be going as hard as they could for the whole game. That said, a number of guys were out and they clearly couldn't make finals at that stage.

We have challenges ourselves with culture. It is tricky accomodating so many talented early picks that not only all want to start but all want to be the main man.

No doubt the focus is on you now as it was for us in our first few years when we were really struggling, had very little support with fans and had people saying we were doomed.

GWS are not out of the woods by any means and are just a poor season away from copping similar scrutiny. Some of the VFL teams and supporters love to use both expansion teams as whipping boys and blame us for all ills.

My msg is purely of support, not to be condescending.

All good mate :)
Would be good to see GWS win the flag for footy in the northern states esp. Western Sydney...and just to see the melts from down south.
I love the game first and the club second. Not sure that is the priority for many from established footy states.

I mean, I know we seem to say it every year, but our best 22 does have talent out the a** right across the field, at least on paper. We just need a coach (complete coaching staff I guess) who can make them look like and play like a team for a change and use a gameplan that 1. the players understand, and 2. promotes defense as well as offence. Plus our 22-38 ranked players are (finally) slowly improving, and will hopefully continue this trade period/draft. Although in saying that, even if all this were to happen injuries would just f*ck us over anyway so......

You can't coach NEAFL standard players to win AFL matches
We need resilient players who don't get injured
No
Actually we need injuries to be spread evenly rather than concentrated on our A grade players

Something feels different this time guys. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has been filled with an enormous amount of optimism over the last 24 hours. We wanted Dew and Evans the Messiah delivered. Next on the agenda is the free agency/trading period and we've already been linked to a few names we can get excited about. Then we have our first top 2 pick since 2011 to get excited about.

Now I know our traveling arrangements won't be great in the first half of next season (a great opportunity for the new faces to gel btw) but we just have to remember that our back half of season 2018 should be easier to ride out with little traveling. We'll also get a nicer draw because we finished second last. I really think if we can manage even five wins in the first 11 rounds we give ourselves a massive chance for finals.

I just really felt like expressing my excitement for next season and I'm hoping to see what other Suns supporters think in this thread.

Yes we are happy. Yes we are excited. Yes we are positive. No we don't need a new thread for every new post guys!

Tell me something positive!

Do I have any reason to be optimistic for 2018? I have carried the Suns flag proudly in Canada for 5 seasons and after this trade period, things seem darker to me than at any time since I have been a fan.

It feels like we were just pillaged of Gaz, Saad, Matera and a #2 pick....did we really get back enough value? Weller seems like a solid player but otherwise I am not sure what we received.

Are we a lock for the wooden spoon? Should I set my alarm to watch games in the middle of the night next season like I have always done or is it not going to be worth it? Can I expect anything other than weekly floggings?

Is there a reason for optimism in 2018?

We picked up a proven quality midfielder who wants to play for us for the long term who doesn't have a go home factor that Pick 2 possibly could have

We got something for GAJ instead of nothing if he retired.

We will have two first rounders in next years 'super draft'

Stuart Dew has seen premiership success as a player and an assistant coach and can implement a professional and dominant culture like the Swans.

Just a few positives i can think of, I believe there is a method to the madness

Fly that Suns flag high in Canada buddy!

Dew / Stone will develop players and build a club culture.
By the season's end KK, Lyons, Witts, Barlow, Thompson, Lynch, Hall were all missing. If we get that right we'll improve.
Hanley will be better after his tragic family passing. Miller I expect to improve after ankle issues.
Luck with injuries (big if) and there'll definitely be no floggings.
I'm a cynic by trade, but I'm actually optimistic for next year.

A new game plan under Dew and 3 wins to start the season and we could be on a roll very quickly, I firmly believe the difference between 1st and 10th is not talent it’s belief.

Hawthorn were a great side because they believed it and after a while other clubs did too. That’s why when the fall came it came quickly as they lost the belief and the other clubs saw them as vulnerable.

We can make the 8, we have the talent, wins will bring belief
