MJ was better than useless, but don't kid yourself, he wouldn't get a game with any other club (bar Port & GC) based on yesterdays performance.

Crowley, Lower and Palmer were the positives for me.

MJ would also walk it in for Brisbane, North, Hawthorn and Melbourne.

Until Silver and Griffin are selected sadly MJ seems to have an uncontested run at being in our side too...

Maybe Johnno played well coz it was the indigenous round, and he also won a pretty important toss for us as well.
Earned a call up for next week that's for sure.

It's, I think, a great positive that the Slime are playing Champagne Footy here in May.
Hopefully we can fly under the radar a bit for a while in the media while the front and back pages are yellow and blue. West Coast & Essendon remind me of us last year, absolutely flying in May. A few injuries and the young players getting tired should see them flag a bit as we did while hopefully we are getting back players fresh from injury like Barlow, Hayden, Suban and building our best form toward the business end.
It's a long season!

Very true E, I think weeks 18 - 24 of the season will be more important than rounds 1 to 8. Hopefully the injury curse we are struggling under lifts and we are able to attack that last nine or ten round stretch with a mostly fit, mostly in form set of players...

Positives- a great return to form by Rhys Palmer and Tendai playing his first quarter of AFL football were my favorite highlights. Better games by Duffman, Johnson and Creepy were also positives, as well as Nick Lower's performance against his old side.

I know it was only Port and we did lack a little pace today, especially with some of our decision making, but a win on the road is great for confidence building.

Negatives - David Mundy was a bit down today. Stephen Hill, something is wrong there.

And Lurch getting "turf toe."

Just watched a bit of the game again. Hill got a really hard tag from Kane Cornes, who is one of the best taggers in the game.

That said, I would really like to see Hill put more defensive pressure on the opposition when they get the ball. We really lack some zippy guys like Garlett to put pressure on the opposition in the middle, Hill seems preoccupied with getting away from his tag at all times (even when the opposition get the ball) and doesn't seem to work as hard the other way.

There was one point during yesterday's game when I was angry with Hilly for probably the first time ever.

A Port man was dashing down the middle unattended and Hilly came in from the wing at a 45 degree angle. He could have easily put on the afterburners and absolutely buried the guy in a tackle, but he chose to slow down to a trot and let him run straight past.

I can handle him being down on form and not being able to break a tag yet, but there's absolutely no excuse for weak efforts like that. If anything he should be dying to make the most of perfect opportunities like that to get involved in the game defensively.

edit - sorry just realised this was the positives thread. oh well

Best game of the year for both palmer and pearce and probably at least a few others.

There may yet be a spot in the team for Pearce but in attack. There's worse people to be kicking the ball into the forward 50 at any rate. One good game and all that but he's such a good kick and he's got some games now before players start coming back to prove he deserves a spot.

Speaking of good kicks, Hill is another one that's so good that even though he's got no pace atm he's contributing something at least out of the backline. I just hope it's an injury (or form) that has some chance of improving and it's not just a case of having to 'manage' it for the entire season.

Other than Palmer's game, a real highlight for me was watching Mzungu ran around in the last quarter. The little slick handball out of a pack, a few bursts of speed and some good positioning, a few disposals, he was able to make a great cameo at the end for his first game. I think he will add a little spark and excitement to the team over the next few weeks.
