Possible Melbourne line-up for 2008

Predicting the lineup for 2012 is too hard. You're assuming that some of those players won't be traded...and any kids we draft from now until then won't get a place in the starting 18? Looking a bit too far into the future IMO...like the Full Back line though.

I'm sure to cop a lot of flak for leaving Neitz and Yze out of the 22 and I would agree - but only on an emotional level. Everyone, including me, would love to see them play out the year and retire on their own terms. In fact, I'm sure that will happen - certainly in Neitz's case, but the squad I've listed would be in the best interests of the team. It's where our future lies. Both Neitz and Yze are capable of the occassional great game when they're turned on, but in the vast majority of games they have become a liability.

Newton will be our next star full forward and he showed enough this year to suggest that he will be ready to make the position his own next season.

Bruce, Sylvia, Green and Wheatley could easily swap positions, but I feel Bruce has the defensive skills and the line breaking ability to be the perfect hbf, Green is best suited to playing on the forward line and Wheatley's pace is best suited to the wing. Sylvia has shown ability as a forward, but I'd like to see him developed as a midfielder.

Petterd was a sensation last season and deserves to be in the starting 18.

Miller has been retained by Bailey for a reason. I hope it's because he sees the potential Miller has to become a great chf - he's certainly proven that he's not a defender.

Meeson is an unknown quantity so he can't be put straight into the top 22. By the end of the preseason I hope he's shown enough to be included.

PJ needs to improve his ruck work if he's to retain the 2nd ruck position ahead of Meeson, but his ability to go forward and kick goals makes him the first choice - Jamar is not an option.

Davey played well in the midfield this season, but we have plenty of midfield options. Davey's greatest asset is his ability to hold the ball in attack and run down defenders. His best value to the club is as a small forward.

CJ has a hell of a lot of skill but he doesn't have the right temperament. Hopefully he can improve this aspect of his game or he'll follow in the footsteps of TJ.

Dunn is a champion of the near future. He deserves a spot in the starting 18, but he can play effectively in so many position that the IC seemed the best place for him.

Most of you have included Frawley. I can't see why. He really struggled this season and his decision making was terrible. He may develop into a fine player given time, but I can't see him being ready by next season.

Also I think there is value in keeping Neitz on for another year, I'm not sure that Newton is ready to be the main man just yet.... star of the show? yes, but if he has to cop the Rutten's, Glass's, Scarlett's etc every week with no support then he will be in a bit of strife. I mean dont get me wrong, if anyone could do it, it would be him but he needs some support down there.
I think if Yze can get back to his best footy then he will be a good assett to the side.

Frawley replacing Carrol will happen in the distant future - probably at least 2 more years. He's still way below Carrol's level at this stage of his development. Newton replacing Neitz is in the far more immediate future.

Don't misunderstand me. Neitz is vying with Flower, Lyon and Stynes for my all time favourite player, but I'm trying to put emotion aside and look at what is in the best long term interests of the club. After all, the club is bigger than any individual.

I understand where you're coming from, but you can't buy the experience Neitz has. If anything, it would hinder our future if he wasn't there every week giving advice to the youngsters as well as leading from the front in the manner we all know he can. That's the most effective way that our youngsters can learn.

The Travis Johnstone trade was fantastic, good start coach, he clearly had no interest in improving himself for the team......

God why did we ever give scott thompson away!! I know he wanted to go but power of pursuasion surely!! I gave up after that!!

Your correct with almost everthing that you have said there MadMan. All the people that have said how getting rid of Travis was a bad thing are either too sentimental or overate what he has done in the past 2 to 3 years. I mean don't get me wrong, he is one of the most gifted people when it comes to pure ability however he doesn't apply himself.

Neitz, although had alot of injuries this year is still the best bloke to play FF. Juice will become the go to man soon enough. Neitz will help him whilst he does his apprenticeship next year.

I am very confident that if melbourne play ther best 22 for most of the 08 season they will make top4 are will be very dangerous.
players that will need to fire are,mclean,sylvia,davey,green,bruce,miller(full back)moloney.....all had quiet 07..IF THEY PLAY ALL YEAR MELBOURNE CAN LOOK FORWARD TO GOING DEEP INTO SEPTEMBER AND THAT IS A FACT...
Expect neitz to have a good year 70goals +
davey and robbo will kick 60+ between them
Jeff white will lift gauranteed.
our backline will be strong with rivers,miller,carroll,whelan,maybe bartram.
throw in jones,bate and dunn if they contribute as well LOOK OUT>>>>

He wanted to go home. There was nothing we could do about that, and we weren't going to offer him a lucrative contract. He wouldn't have put us in the finals last year either.

To be honest we were never as good as we thought we were. If you look at our draws we always lost to the top 4 teams, and as a result the 5-8 position on the ladder suited us.

Close to the stupidest thing I have heard in a very, very long time. Might not be best 22? James McDonald is one of the first picked week in, week out. He isn't a silky superstar, but with Doggy gone, Junior easily now has the title of heart of the MFC. Try and find an AFL coach who doesn't respect him and the way he goes about his footy.

Mind-boggling.

I agree about Newton. He didn't show much compared to other KP prospects at other clubs (Westhof, Hawkins, etc). He's certainly no replacement for Neitz yet/

Newton showed at least as much as Hawkins (who shot to Rising Star favouritism after one game and thereafter faded into obscurity).
