Which cheap rookie rucks are the best to get into your team, i'm not really seeing any who will get a game at the moment and you hate to waste to much money on your ruck bench.

I'm assuming you've got Zac Smith?

Re: Bench Players.

Two Dees worth looking at - Strauss and Blease. Strauss was one of the best in the intra-club, Blease...well, he'll definitely get games barring injury, and his leg's fully healed.

Both Round 1 picks from 2008. And relatively cheap, at about $110k each.

Well, that's Melbourne. :D

So far, in terms of rookies in my squad (including Interchange players), I've gone for Duigan, Puopolo, Gorringe, Day, Tape, Conca, Callinan, Wallis, Atley, Hallahan, Z. Smith, M. Otten, and Heppell. Could change before the start of the regular season, though.

Re: 2011 SC Rookies!!!!

So that's a nice list of names there mate.... Your thoughts?

I'll help you out and get the ball rolling....

Otten: Why wouldn't you pick him up? With bock and the old brigade gone, there's some holes to be filld this year at crow land which I'm pretty content he can fill (if his 143 point first NAB cup game is anything to go by). My only concern is injury, which is a risk I'm more than happy to take given the upside.

Anyone have any particular thoughts on anyone?

Re: 2011 SC Rookies!!!!

Ill give a couple a crack. Just small notes, cant be bothered doing a big write up. Maybe tomorrow.

Heppell: Looked very comfortable in the NAB cup match and looks set to play a role like Ryan Griffen (Similar looking player imo). Top draft pick for a reason and the fact he is back/mid is a bonus.

Coad: Mature aged recruit who played some very good games in the VFL. Recruited as a mature body and will no doubt get game time as a result. Looks like a handy player for GC across half back and is competiting for a spot in my team over Toy.

Toy: I remember Swallow saying somewhere that if Toy went into the draft last year he would have gone top 5. Not sure on his credentials but thats the kind of notes I like to hear. Looked good in his NAB cup game playing off half back, had some good run going. A few sloppy mistakes but nothing you wouldn't expect from a rookie. Scored well. Didn't do much in the second game as he went off injured (Nothing serious).

Duigan: Another mature age recruit who looks set to slot into Carltons back line for the bulk of the season. Was best on ground in one of Carltons practise matches. Didn't set the world on fire during his NAB games but showed potential and looked solid rather then spectacular.

Swallow: Guy is a gun, enough said. Never has there been a more AFL ready recruit. Should play 22 games and looks to be a player who will be able to score very well.

Harris: Will play every game this year as GC's hard nut midfielder. Very good in contested footy and has plenty of AFL experience. Averaged in the 80's when playing at North, but could increase that average into the 90's with solid time in the midfield.

Mzungu: Had my eye on this kid ever since Freo traded for him. His name stood out and I watched his highlight reel on youtube. If you hagve your doubts give it a look. Penciled him in straight away. Was vindicated after watching him in the NAB cup game. Looks like Freo have snapped up another mature age gem.

Wallis: Showed some class and didn't look too out of place. Will struggle to find a permanent spot in the midfield at the doggies but will play enough games to warrant a spot on a supercoach bench.

I'm leaving work now, if I have time i'll do a better write up tomorrow, if no one else has.

Duigan - Showed potential in carltons intra-club, but thats all (nab cup games he, in my eyes, didnt show enough to stay in the 22)

Coad - Flying under the radar, mature age defender who racked up good points in vfl last yr, should be a key man in their backline!

Heppell/Hibberd - dont know too much about these dons but enough from the don supporters that they should play early on and get 15+/- games

Mzungu - 24 games at an average of 75+, barlow?? nuh but he will be the rising star!

Swallow - he would hate that above comment, close second with a good average aswell!

Contin - Forget conca from the tigers, this is the yound bloke u wanna jump on! good nab games keep an eye out for him.

Wallis/libratore - wont get into 22 early, get on em midway through when you trade out your harris for cash.

Harris - Not a rookie, played some good footy at the roos, not great but for 125k how can u pass down some1 who will avg 60+ and go up 200+K?

Smith - GC second ruck to jolly, this guy is good! evry1 is going with tippett form GC but i think smith is infront of him on the selection board by a mile!

Bailey - again not a rookie, just injury prone, had his best pre-season yet and is ready to go, just a matter of being able to slot into the hawks 22, skipper did it last yr and made us all some dough, bailey will do it 2011

Richo - love that name, the kid can play aswell, kicks a lttle straighter then the legend :) Roos have talked him up and in the nab he was best on ground agaisnt the dogsi thhink it was.

Matera - missed 1 game for the GC last yr in VFL with some good scores around the 100 SC, as a bench option have a look coz he is only 103K

Smith - Not really sure to be honest, i have him coz a friend said he will be a gun! thats teh only info i hav sorry.

theres a few names for you guys, there are a few more, should be about 5 decent players in each position that will get games and be good cows.... just wait till nab is finished and u will get a good understanding.... only locks so far are Swallow, Mzungu, (maybe) richo.

Second ruck to Jolly??

People are going with J Tippett to allow the Petrie/K Tippett:J Tippett cover through the year. Although, seeing as Petrie is effectly gone for the first couple of rounds I can see a lot more people moving away from that strategy.

Beams: Will play games on and off this season, but I wouldn't expect much from him. Show a little in the NAB cup with some good contested possessions. Has got a good body which will serve him well at AFL level, but may get let down with his decision making under pressure. My problem with Beams is that even though he was playing in a very poor line up he didn't stand out at all, did some solid things but bnothing to indicate he will step it up this year. Not going to be a high scorer in any case, and considering he will only play 10-15 games is probably worth over looking.

Atley: A lot of North supporters seem pretty excited about this kid, and honestly I cant say i blame them. But given he is a midfielder there are far better options with players that are going to get more game time, and score better. Didn't set the world on fire in the NAB cup and found it hard to find the ball, but showed enough to ensure he will see some games this year. I could be proven wrong with him, and i'm sure some teams will take the punt, but in my opinion not the best option as a rookie mid.

Z.Smith: will no doubt be GC's 2nd ruck. Depending on how well he plays early on could end up spending a good chunk of the year playing ruck as Fraser is moved forward. Solid build at 205cm and 97kg, and should be able to go up against most of the league ruckman without to much hassle. Looks to be one of the ruckman of the future. He is sitting on my bench. Will play almost every game and should score well enough to be good back up.

Mccualey: Not much upside here. Could be a good ruckman in the future but at the lions is 3rd in line and unlikely to see much game time. Solid build and is ready for AFL but might just lack the oppurtunities some other young rucks will have. Better to look at Smith or Derrickx as they are more likely to get game time consistently.

Richardson: Along with Swallow, Harris and Mzunghu is a must have this year. He proved his worth during the NAB cup, as one of North's best players racking up a few touches in each game. Mature aged rookie with a body that can handle the AFL. Should play almost every game this year running across half back and will rotate through the midfield as well. Knows how to find the ball, but a few disposals under pressure were a bit poor (nothing to extreme for a first gamer though). If you haven't got him, get him now.

Matera: One of GC better players through out the 2 NAB cup games rotating through the midfield (Which is a bonus for any forward in SC). Is capable of moving up the ground and getting some touches as well as playing closer to goal and sneaking in a few quick goals. Has great skills, and doesn't seem to crack under pressure. Should be a regular in the suns line up this year.

Darling: This kid has potential. In the TAC cup last year he record a SC score of 308, the highest ever recorded score, so you know he has SC potential. Plays the game with alot of confidence which is good. Didn't get alot of the ball in the NAB cup but when he did you could see that he has alot of talent. Belongs at AFL level and although West Coast like to take time with the younger players, his attitude and natural talent will demand plenty of game time.

Callinan: Looked ok during the NAB cup, did very little to catch the eye in game one, but showed enough to warrant a spot in Adelaides 22 in game 2. Should play most games but will surely be dropped for some. A good player for your 3rd bench spot in the forwards but do not expect him to score very high.

Hope that helps a little Smear. Cheers

A Otten Yes
M Otten No

Can anyone from the Richmond baord give us some thoughts on Derickx!

Id keep away from Lycett from WCE BTW. Only get games if Nic Nat, Cox and Lynch all went down.:(

Not sure how he faired over the pre season but his form in the NAb cup was good. Actually play the bulk of both games in the ruck which is a great sign. Is mature age and manage 151 SC points in his second NAB game. Fairly quick and very agile for a big man. Laid 5 or 6 tackles in the second game, and shows a similar intensity to Mumford with his attack on the ball and determination.

Interesting to see that not one GC player scored above 74 SC points last night against WC.

The Nab Cup is 'worked' differently they only give out ~2800 points compared to around ~3300 in the main season.

Im even leaning toward Jack Darling from WCE. He is impressive.

I was thinking the same thing. Would figure he will probably play a lot of games

hear is one guy not geting much of a mention

Mark Lock: won gold coast best and fairest last year, will play every game for them in the middle or half back is only 19.

Interesting...
