Ok around this time of the year we hear a few whispers on the grapevine on which players could be traded in 2001. Post up which rumours you have heard, which players you would like your club to get rid of and put which players your club would like to have!

I've heard that Heath Black, Craig Callahan, Brodie Holland, James Clement and Jess Sinclair are all possible trades for the Dockers this year and from the Eagles David Antonowicz (sp?) is believed to be heading back east.

I am only repeating what I have heard from our fan forum but Fraser Gehrig, Chad Morrison and Michael Braun all want to head back east. Most people are probably aware of the talk about Gehrig and Morrison but maybe not Braun.

If I had a choice I would take Braun. He would fit nicely into our midfield and is a lot more consistent than the other two.

It is also no coincidence that Port are lacking some tall defenders and there have been rumours that the Wakelin twins may want to head back to their former club next year. In my opinion they receive a fair bit of unwarranted criticism from our supporters and I would be disappointed to see them go. Particularly Darryl who has really come of age over the past few years.

And to gocatsgo, just to reply to your posting regarding St Kildas crowds in the closed thread, I think you way off the mark. Did you really think St Kilda would draw anymore than 17,500 to a game against the other bottom side? We had not won a game and obviously it is hard to convince those supporters of Waverley to give Colonial a chance, particularly when we are losing.

It was a decent crowd. As a cats supporter, surely you must notice the large flucturations in attendances at Shell Stadium when you are winning/losing.

Sainter you wrote "We had not won a game."
Woah - where were you last Friday night? You guys WON and your now 15th on the ladder now! The sainters are on a roll!

At Brisbane we have a few players out of contract.
Leppa ( have heard he wants to go back to Melbourne), Champion, Voss and Bradshaw.

If Hawthorn's midfield continues to lag behind the excellent forward and back lines, Expect the hawks to trade heavily for 2001.

I don't know any names but even our patience might be stretched this year (It's been 10 years since a premiership, dont ya know ?

(apologies to Doggies, Swans, Lions, Tigers, Cats, Saints, Dees, Magpies, who obviously have more patience than us)

Yeah Pess, but who goes?

The thread that was started over at the Hawk Forum was Hay was looking to go back.

Now I dont know about you but I would want it HEAVILY in our favour for any of the "spine" to be cleared.

Also most of the blokes we took at last years draft were targetted as playing seniors for 2001. As far as the Hawks go, I hope that no one under 22 gets traded. Stability and knowing that your wanted by the club can be a bonus for when contract negotiations come up.

Also I wonder about the Dons. Not that they couldnt hold most of the talent they have, but how many might want to go just so they can be assured of a regular senior game?

Mmmmmmm... OK, here's the deal. We'll give you Wooden (good, gutsy midfielder, great in the wet, too bad we don't have much wet
smile.gif
) for Hay. He's a WAussie isn't he?

Maybe not.

Any trade for Fraser Gehrig would have to VERY VERY lucrative. Braun & Morrison are both pretty happy here. Chad was an Eagles fan even when growing up in Victoria. He loves Perth, and lives with one of his best mates (Brauny). I'd be very surprised if he was looking to be traded.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Wirrapunda. While I really hope not, he's the one most likely to go IMHO. Younger (though noone knows his actual b'day), strong family, injury-prone and homesick. But again we'd be wanting a top, top, top trade for him. Or a couple?

I don't know who I would trade, Grendel.

I was one of those on the forum last year who was outraged at suggestions that someone like Dickie Knee be traded as the midfield unit as a whole carried us very well over the rebuilding period. It's just that now the Defence and Attack seem to have leapfrogged them by so much it's that side of things that's holding us back.

Perhaps after a season under a different coach the support for some of them to stay might not be as great. Especially if supporters sense the onset of something special.

I reckon our midfield group are all strong in certain aspects of their game but with a couple of exceptions, none of them is al all-rounder. (I'm thinking of someone like riccuto here)

I do sense that Judgie (who seems to be popular on the WCE website after a couple of wins) did de-skill our players somewhat. Perhaps we need to be a bit more patient.

BUT if someone like Hay or Holland (the ones who rumours have been strongest on. I repeat I wouldn't like to see either go) did want to leave then Its an opportunity to get a win-win situation on some hot young proven talent.

The other option would be to follow the Hird / Kouta / Carey example and let a 'tall' loose in the midfield, as our guys tend to be on the smaller side.

Croady or Dutchy might be options for this, although I know Dutchy's not keen on the midfield

Actually if there were any trades to be done with (hypothetical) a WA born Hawk wanting to head back. I wouldnt really be looking at the Eagles. Freo with some of their Vic born onballers, Black,Sinclair or maybe another 3 way dance as Waterhouse wants to go back to SA. So we get one from Freo and say another onballer from Port or the Crows.

Thats IF and I mean IF it were to happen. There isnt much from the Eagles I would want.

Do you really think the Hawks would trade Hay for Wooden, you are an idiot. We may have trouble in the midfield at times but not enough trouble to have to trade Hay for someone who is half as good as him. Wooden's skills are terrible.

Theresa, I've heard similar stories. Leppitsch and Bradshaw appear to be the ones who might go (be traded). Wouldn't be surprised if Lynch, Champion and possibly Lambert retire. I think Brett Voss and Martin McKinnon may be candidates for trading/delisting, both are similar to Tristan Lynch and Trent Bartlett in that they always seem to be in and out of the senior team and find it difficult to cement a place.

Hawkfan, Grendel

Perhaps we shouldn't have been specific. Especially about Johnny Hay - It's probably not a coincidence that we have lost every game he has missed.

I hope our present bunch find the way to get up there as a group but If the big disparity between the midfield and the attack/defence persists, expect changes at the end of the season.

Contrast us with Carlton, whose midfield keeps them competitive (although Whitnall's no slouch for a 'fat kid' either)

Both Sydney and Brisbane will be looking for a FRANCHISE player - to replace Lynch / Lockett. The success of Lockett - remember Collingwood knocked him back as it was felt he was too 'disruptive' ( shake the head ) - for Sydney ( success = crowd = hype ), AFL ( hype hype - the Brownlow night and look VIC clubs, Sydney's a gold mine !! ) and Lockett ( not ANOTHER commemorative mounted photo !!! = $$$$ ) was one of the 90's success stories and I dare say , if Lynch had not been struck down, Brisbane may have also made a GF ( he was a SUPERSTAR in 1993 ). These guys you can build a marketing campaign around !!
So who's around like that ? Getting a million $$$ without the daily pressure ! Probably someone who has appeared on the Footy Show ( media friendly ) and can actually play. Probably a goal kicker too.

Mr. Peter Everitt !!!

The Saints could clean up - think of all those homesick Lions and Swans lads who have seen Grant and O'Bree do it. Get those player managers active - create the rumour !

I know for a fact if Brett Voss goes so does his brother. Michael Vos is out of contract this year. His aim is to play a gf with his brother. Some club may get a nice little package deal there.

Sainter, The fluctuating crowds at KP in recent years.

When we're winning we get about 22,000 when we're losing we get about 19,000 BIG CHANGE THERE.

There certainly are crowd differences when we play at the MCG, I would expect 45,000 at Geelong and C'Wood this weekend, if both teams were in winning form and the weather was predicted to be good, you could expect 70,000 plus.

For me, Trades at Geelong should be David Mensch, but who would want him? should have gone to the Magpies when he had the chance....DAM LOYALTY.

Another who would be a decent pick up for another club would be Daniel Lowther, a youngster in the mould of Paul Couch, unfortunately I don't think he will succeed at Geelong with Clarke, O'Brien and Spriggs in the pipeline.

The other that should be traded is Ronnie.....ANYONE WANT HIM??????

I think you hit the nail on the head Bernie. It must have been a slow news day and Mike Sheehan had to come up with something controversial. Therefore, he decided that he would once again stick his boot into the clubs that were down at the time and suggest that we trade Spider Everitt.

Sheehan is right that he could be used as a very good bargaining tool. Personally, I can't fathom why you would consider trading a champion for a some early draft picks. Clubs recruit players from the draft in the hope that one day they could develop into a future champion. Spider grew up locally in Hastings and is quite happy at St Kilda. Aside from losing such a great player, this would severely harm our supporter base. His popularity amongst the younger saints fans is unbelievable.

Growing up in the 80s as a saints fan was far from easy, but with an idol like Tony Lockett, I could cope with losing. His departure at the end of 1994 introduced me to the cold reality of professional football. I would hate for that to happen again to other youngsters. In our forum, parents have mentioned from time to time how their kids were copping a hard time at school and want to change to a more successful team.

Build the club around champion players, don't get rid of them in the hope of unearthing another champion.

Would love to have Spider Everitt in Sydney.

We need another Plugger ! Not because the hype is great for the game in Sydney - no, I'm not really interested in all that stuff.

On a short ground we need to develop a style of game that suits taking the ball from the centre and kicking directly to a big strong ff leading hard up the ground. It was a style that Tony Lockett played to perfection and it is the style I believe the Swans need to get back to if they want to start winning again.

So, Spider would be good, so would Jason Heatley, So would Michael Voss and Warren Tredrea would be a useful pick up as well.

About who we should trade - hmmmm - I have heard a rumour at the Swans that Daryn Cresswell wanted to go after last season and has reluctantly agreed to stay - for now.

Maybe thats why he has been a little quiet this season.

Sydney should be headed for a massive clean-out at the end of this season, not just because we are losing at the moment but because alot of our list is starting to age quite badly.

Wayne Schwass - maybe 1 season left in him.
Andrew Dunkley - ditto
Brett Allison - already past it, a mistake to draft him in the first place.
Troy Luff - a late bloomer but now starting to show his age.
Dale Lewis - already on the veterans list, will go if broken arm doesn't heal properly.
Paul Kelly - next year could be his last esp if knee doesn't make a full recovery.

Going to be VERY interesting to watch the player trades this year.

Sainter

Of course Mike Sheahan is in la-la-land (so what else is new?). The Lockett trade made sense in that Lockett can only play the one position, and as long as the Saints could find two or three forwards to get 130 goals combined (like the Leowe, Hall, Heatley set up of '97) plus some good young players via the draft, they were always going to come out ahead.

But Everitt is a different matter. He's a mobile ruckman who can kick goals AND he can turn a game. Players of his ability are few and far between, and that's why Melbourne spent so much time and money chasing Jeff White and why Josh Fraser was the top draft pick for 2000. It would be damn hard for the Saints to replace him on the field, let alone his off-field value.

Then again, Sheahan is a journo that doesn't have to actually make a decision that affects a footy club. So we should all breathe a sigh of relief for that alone.

I think it would be fair to say that Craig Sholl and Robert Scott are in their last seasons - they are both out of contract at the end of the season, and on present form would be extremely lucky to have them renewed. Evan Hewitt is also out of contract and may look at going back to WA. However, the interesting rumour I heard the other day was that Sav Rocca is hot to trot to be traded to non other than the Sydney Swans !! How ironic is that?? As well as Essendon apparently has a lot of players coming out of contract and with Hirdy in the process of re-negotiating his contract there could be some pretty disgruntled Bombers come the end of the year (especially if they win the flag)..

Shinboner,

In regards to Jeff White, we were very keen to get him to St Kilda and being a saints supporter he would have been very happy. Unfortunately, as we know Melbourne exceeded their salary cap in order to get him and the rest his history. My problem with the AFL is that they compensated Fremantle with a draft pick in the top five to make up for losing White, yet we were given nothing for losing Jamie Shanahan to Melbourne at the same time. Of course I am not saying that Shanahan is anywhere near as good as White but the fact remains that we were owed a draft pick in compensation.

You are exactly right about Spider, he is one player that cannot be replaced. And Mike Sheehan does really have no idea. I just hate how he loves to kick teams when they are down.

Sainter

I totally agree with you. If Freo got compensation for losing White, then St. Kilda should also have received something for losing Shanahan.

Speaking of Sheahan kicking teams when they're down, why wasn't he kicking Melbourne in the guts last year? Nothing to do with him being a Melbourne fan, would it?

Still, in a MAJOR shock, Sheahan did write an intelligent article yesterday about Charles Perkins rantings. And while I'm writing about journalists, Geelong SHOULD sue the Australian for Patrick Smith's article the previous day. If what Smith says is true, how can he smear a whole club with the opinion of just one person. And how would he know if the club didn't deal with it internally. Last thing, it's stupid for him to imply that Geelong are a racist club when they've had a history of great Aboriginal players like (the revered) Polly Farmer and Brian Peake (both captains) and they tried damn hard to sign the likes of the Krakouer brothers, Stephen Michael, Michael Long. Sue Geelong Sue!

To Sydney supporters: Is Michael O'Loughlin out of contract at the end of the year? Now that his brother is playing for the Crows, I think it would be great if Michael came back here to play. Mind you, no-one wanted to trade with the Crows after they won back-to-back; I have a feeling Ben Holland was all set to come back at the beginning of 98/99(?) and the Hawkes wouldn't agree to any trades.

It's been talked about here in Adel lately that it's very hard to persuade Melb players to move interstate because there aren't the opportunites in media etc for them to make extra money off field. The only way non-Vic teams can get Melb based players is if they originally come from a non-Vic team and want to go home.

Crowmad

I don't know if O'Loughlin is out of contract oot. To lose hime would be a kick in the guts for us, thats for sure.

I understand he is pretty happy up here and there is absolutely no talk of him returning home - at the moment.

If anything, I'm sure Micky is busy trying to persuade little brother Ricky to come up to Sydney
