I reckon Sam Mayes will be our only trade this off season.

I think our philosophy is to look to upgrade players 10 - 22 on our list, players who are looking to move for reasons other than money. You have to pay overs to get elite talent into your club and bringing them in can destroy your depth like it has done to port.

With Freo's form they won't be getting Hogan or any other established KPP, so they will have a lot more money to throw at Lachie Neale than we will.
Agreed. Trading for 'big fish' costs too much and means you are relying on individuals over structure. We should take our great development of players as a sign to keep our first rounder and trade in role players and those second tier types that might flourish in our set up. Mayes is probably a good example.
It's exactly what hawthorn have done exceptionally well

Too early to propose anything, as we have the season to play out first to decide.

All I'm saying is it is healthy to trade players who you don't think will feature much in the AFL team or we don't expect the players to play consistent footy at the level we expect.

Also, it is usually better for the player as they get a fresh opportunity... so they may be happy to move if still under contract (but I wouldn't force anyone out if they really didn't want to leave if under contract).

It doesn't really matter if we get later picks for them, particularly if we need points for say Jarman's son.
And herein lies the problem. It's all very well to suggest that we should trade players who are surplus to requirements, but the problems start when you actually have to identify those players. While a good idea in theory, the practice is somewhat more complicated.

I'm also not sold on the idea of stockpiling late picks, in order to have points for a F/S selection. Don't forget that we still have to use these picks, even after they have been devalued to the back of the draft. It doesn't do much for your depth if you end up with 1x 1st round selection and 4x 5th round selections once the bidding process has been completed. Doesn't hurt if you're GWS, and already have 22x 1st round players on your team list - but few other clubs have that luxury.

Then there's the question of where those surplus players would go? Which other club is going to want players who aren't in our best 22 and can't get a game at Adelaide? I can see Lyons attracting offers, and maybe CEY (but probably not). Hendo is a FA anyway. I'm struggling to see anyone being interested in Shaw, Otten & Kelly.

What sort of position does Mayes play ?

Anyone know how Sam Durdin is going at North ? Hasn't made a senior debut yet, from memory he was a big KPD/KPF type

Doesn't Mayes play hb / wing?

Durdin was a 3 year project, quite thin and footy naive ....in his 2nd year now

Why? Will our proposed signing of jay van Berlo have failed thus denying us the dream team of Nathan & jay - together at last?

About as likely as us trading for Mayes, don't think we looking to make potato salad
This is boring.

Mayes has shown as much as Seedsman had, and we traded for him.

Unless we pull in a free agent of some kind I don't think we'll trade for anyone. We could potentially trade players out but not in.

Ok, little bit of scuttlebutt. I have a mate with connection at Carlton. Was spot on with both Betts and Menzel/Kedge. Seems they are into CEY, with him struggling to get a game here there could be a move.
seems logical .....who would we want in return? .....no-one !!!!

he was playing defence now forward and doing ok now
Mayes drafted as a high half forward that goes into midfield now playing off half back and not that well there

I disagree. I can't think of any games where Mayes has stood out after all these years....
Mayes had some great games in his first year, including a few 25+ disposal games. A couple if those were equal to Seedsman's ANZAC day. Last year he was okay after coming back from his stress fracture, with a bunch of 20+ games.
