Could be wrong but Smith was likely drafted with the view of eventually playing as a midfielder; hasn't turned out that way but it would not have been an unreasonable expectation.

Cheating to keep Tippett and denying ourselves the chance to draft Cripps is the big sin, meekly allowing tackling bull Jack Redden to be wooed by West Coast when we'd just lost Patrick flipping Dangerfield and using the pick that would have pipped the Eagles on a speculative medium defender is up there too. Particularly when West Coast have an abundance of similar types and we have no one that tackles apart from Sloane.
Disagree on Redden, he looks average and wouldn't solve our problems.

The disappointing thing for me, is that over the past couple of years we've seen South Australians, originally drafted interstate change sides but not come home to South Australia. These include Jack Redden, Ryan Griffen, Adam Cooney, James Aish, Joel Patful, Ben Kennedy...

For the next year or two, our major focus needs to be procuring talent which is ready to fit into a side making a run for a Premiership, with obviously midfielders the highest priority. At present our midfield is leaking Inside D50's like anything else which is putting the defense under an extreme amount of pressure to stem the tide and then the forward line to make the most of limited opportunities. We need to strengthen our midfield department or we'll struggle to make a mark in September.

Funnily enough for some SA based footballers Adelaide isn't that great of a place and the lure to come home isn't all that fantastic.

We've tried numerous times to get a bunch of a bunch of SA boys back home with no positive outcome (Hurn, Griffen, Fisher, Redden & Varcoe being the main ones)..

You and I have similar taste, I think - was just going to make a post on this, as Brett Anderson has been writing that Jack Steele could be looking to leave and GWS could be looking for points.
Kristof; what is Anderson suggested would be the reason behind Steele wanting to move?

He's playing regularly in a team on the rise. Is it an issue of coin?

He'd be a perfect recruit.

I'd say job security and coin

Hopper is breathing down his neck and he's a similar player , hopper being a little more blue chip and in his first season

Rather than marking or goal kicking we are really lacking another mid with good defensive efforts. Sloane is our only hard two way runner ATM. Can't really think of anyone who would be on the market to suit that need though.

No doubt the Tippett saga has cost us. The club has an excellent development program and their ability to turn rookies and later picks into regular 22 players is highly recognised. We certainly need some 2-way running mids or ones with better leg speed. I think the height factor for midfields is slowly becoming less a factor with the game becoming quicker and more open.

I haven't watched any of West Coasts games this season, but has Redden really been that good that we should irritated about not really going after him.

Also, Doedee is ridiculously raw. It's quite likely he won't end up being a medium defender in the mid to long term.

This is actually possible

Shouldn't get set on one player to draft however , there may be a better mid than Shaz Jnr available but he should definitely be in the mix
No it's not .....we will not trade our 2017 first round pick

Bumper draft crop for 2017 may see clubs hold their picks
CLUBS may be more reluctant to trade future draft selections this year with a bumper crop of prospects expected to be available in 2017.

Recruiters have been excited about next year's NAB AFL Draft pool since the under-16 carnival last year, when a mix of talls, midfielders and smaller types shone across both divisions.

Been average so far .....but still finding his feet in a new football program, similar to Jetta
Better to judge in 2nd half of the year

He's raw, but really athletic, a natural leader, and great mark :D .......he'll start in defense, but i'll repeat this infinitum, we did not recruit Doedee as a defender

People said we draft Wigg as a small defender, cause that's where he played in the U18 Championships ......guess where he's playing in SANFL, Midfield

We do not draft half back flankers with first round picks ......2nd, yes, but not first round

Smith is the argument against, however, it does baffle me why he isn't a permanent midfielder by now. Defensively he's nothing special.

Oh i think the plan, once he built his body up, was to play midfield ......just circumstances each season has prevented that from happening
