They say this every year and apparently last year was no good blah blah

We need 2 good mids in a hurry

Then a young key forward becomes next priority , closely followed by a ruckman
Absolutely.

Milera makes 1 almost certain top flight mid.

Then we need Smith and Menzel to also step up.

I agree with your priorities ........just can't believe the club would consider trading this years and next years first round picks .....i'll be very surprised if it happens

Agreed ......and then maybe Greenwood can take that step .......he's certainly on a huge upward curve ....could have had 4 goals in last weeks SANFL match .....iam very impressed

would be happy to use one this year in draft and one to trade in

Laird is good defensively due to heart, effort and fantastic aerial ability for his size. Saad is also very good defensively but in a different manner which includes top end speed (he wouldn't have let Puopolo sprint away from him so easily).

But with ball in hand there is zero comparison. Laird is an average kick of the footy, minimal penetration and just throws it on the boot when under pressure. Saad's kicks are clinical and bullet like.

Given the pathetic defensive effort of our current midfield, if we got Saad I wouldn't mind Laird playing the current Douglas role of defensive mid. I reckon he would get more possessions and actually do the defensive job.

Jesus, talk about throwing someone under the bus! Laird has always been one of our best short to medium kicks in the side, and also always been one of the most composed under pressure, why else do you think he is so good in tight situations? Throwing it on the boot is the exact opposite of what Laird does in all honesty.

I'd be open to Saad and think he has a lot to offer. Question marks over his aerial ability in a contest and ability to stick to his man like glue (you just don't notice it cos he makes up lost ground so quick), but let's not make him out to be some superstar. Laird is a far better player ATS and has so many more runs on the board.

Agree to disagree re Laird's kicking under pressure. I've got no drama with his short passing in space…it's the long wobbly hacks forward that I think don't get picked up more because he's a favourite player of most because he brings so much good to the table.

We are not talking about replacing Laird but adding to our small defenders.

Do you think he's going to come here to just sit on the bench though? I can't ever see him displacing Brown or Laird, and having 3 defenders under 180cm is getting risky (Jaensch was what 183cm?)

Would obviously be great as depth but he's too good to be just that. Not many teams have a glut of small defenders who are actually capable to be honest. We are fortunate to have 2 very good ones in Laird and Brown, Jaensch would have put us well above the norm. Wigg and Doedee are good cover now, but I do agree it's an area that may need another addition.

A medium defender to cover for Cheney/Doedee wound't go astray.

You can trade both in 1 year but not both years is that right?

Greenwood is a real wildcard, every time I see him play, all I can think is "gee... That kid can football!" Consistency and fitness are still issues obviously, but he is currently making a mockery of a number of guys with a hell of a lot more senior experience. It would not surprise if he plays a game or two towards the end of the year the way he's tracking.

You can only trade away one future pick in the following year ......ATS we've already traded this years 2nd round in 2016

They won't risk missing out on Hogan. And by waiting they will miss out, freo couldn't attract a fly to a fresh turd

At some point we're going to have to acknowledge that, despite the emergence and addition of 3+ players in that role to push him up the field, there must be another reason why Smith is still playing HBF instead of full time midfield, and bringing in even more of those players ie Saad isn't going to fix that issue.

And the reason is considering hes seen limited midfield minutes?

Pyke said at the start of the year how good he was back and was loathe to move him.

O'meara, prestia, neale and hurley is who we should go after!
Thommo, vb, henderson, shaw, grigg out

Yes, he has seen limited midfield minutes, that's the point. He's a great weapon at half back, but if he never transitions to full time midfield, then it just continues the ongoing problem. The only reason to chase someone like Saad is to upgrade Luke Brown for someone faster, we've got bigger fish to fry yet again, this time around a replacement for Thompson that this season has conclusively demonstrated we don't already have. Doesn't have to be the same as Thompson, our own Mitchell would be better, but that kind of player, of that order of talent.

A genuine and proven extractor of the ball with football smarts and talent to burn - we've got the spare money, we've got the facilities, and we (for now at least) have the on field performances to be considered enticing.
