I theorise Don Pyke likes players who are very good at something, rather than players who are OK at everything.

Define a role which relies on certain strengths, find a player who is very good at the strengths required for that role.

Classic example of someone valuable in this structure is Seedsman. Very long kick, can move the ball a long way quickly.

Classic example of someone lesser valued in this structure is Kerridge. Good at lots of things, but not amazingly good at anything except arguably accumulating a lot of the ball.

In Pyke's appearance on Talking Footy, he was (apparently) one of the few coaches who identified they would take Jesse Hogan over Jake Stringer. Stringer is the more rounded player ("the package"), but the things Hogan is good at, he is better at than Stringer.

He backs himself to provide a formation with clear roles which depend upon specific strengths for each role.

I would expect the players we target in trades are very good at 1-2 things, but not getting a game consistently for their current club due to not being sufficiently rounded.

Can't see us chasing someone like Jack Steele, at least not for an early draft pick. Not clear what 1 thing he does at a very high level.

On the other hand Lachie Neale fits this model perfectly, if we have a spot for an inside midfielder. We see Matt Crouch already used in a way which maximises his ability to win contests but puts the ball in other hands for delivery forwards. Brutal list management would suggest if we can bring in Neale, we choose not to renew Thompson, or alternatively if we lose B Crouch.

Only problem with that theory we along with the GCS were linked to Seedsman several weeks before Pyke's appointment is my recollection??

I would love to see Brad come in and play every game after the bye but something tells me that is not going to be the case.

We are taking the same approach as we are with Menzel hoping that tough love will get him to be the sort of player that he can be and we want him to be.
Brad has never had any underlying work ethic issues. And nor is there a question mark over his defensive intent. In both these matters, Brad Crouch is first class. If there were any question marks, then he would have not been rushed back in as early as he was. I reckon they hoped his class would get him through, but obviously this didn't turn out to be the case. It's fantastic he's gone back and continued to perform in the SANFL and continued to build match fitness without any further injury hiccups. I think we'll see a lot of him in the second half of the year. Starting this Thursday or just one more Dougie failure.

I do wonder what we do in terms of contracts and whether it's remotely good enough.
Given he was re-contracted when captain, I'd guess without VB next year we'll release about $500k from our books. I reckon we'd have enough to pay both JJ and Crouch at least what they're worth. But whether they only get offered their value will be the question, moreso with JJ obviously. I'm more confident with Crouch than JJ.

Soft spot for Brisbane
Delistings and retirements: Van Berlo, Jaensch, Grigg, Shaw.

Trades & Free Agency: Henderson, CEY.

Upgrades: ROB, Keath. Greenwood stays cat B, Hunter stays a rookie, as does Beech. Keath is someone I think we may look to give opportunities to, but could stay cat b if that's considered best.

I would keep Lowden for another year. Similarly, I'd keep Kelly and Dear for another look.

Thompson is a hard one. I actually lean towards retirement, and having his salary as something we focus towards someone. I think he's a bit of a crutch for us and I don't think he's there if we're truly competing for a flag.

An entire year in the SANFL doesn't get us much value.
Good teams, which I hope we end up being, get some value for the first choice depth players. CEY played some good AFL level early last year and is clearly our best inside mid type outside of the AFL side, excluding Brad. He'd be good for an upgrade to an existing pick. Might get our 3rd into the middle of the second round.

Now that Thommo has had a rest and the world didn't implode, I wouldn't be too surprised if he goes around again with a plan to play about 15 games. I think we'll upgrade 2 rookies and even if we were going to use our 4th rounder, we'd only need 5 spots in total. Jaensch, VB and Grigg seem certain, leaving only 2 more. Lowden is likely IMO. We would then only need Hendo to leave via FA or a fringe player for a pick or an upgrade and we've got our 5, leaving Thommo on the list. If Hendo stays or an extra rookie gets upgraded it might get a bit tricky. But we'd need only pass at round 4 to cover for one of those scenarios occurring.

I suspect Pyke would have known before his appointment was made official. Perhaps he had suggested some targets for the club to look at before he officially started?

After watching him in the U18 championships ......him being a dud was a high possibility ......great mark, but zero physicality & just got so little of the ball

For all his hype ......i couldn't see anything to get excited about
With all the hype at the time about us drafting him because he was from SA, apparently we didn't rate him as being able to play in defence, and not being big enough to play ruck at AFL level, which was the only position he looked good at as a junior.

North were into him too, but it wasn't until he met with Pyke that he put nominated us as his club of choice. Pyke obviously did a good job convincing him how he'd use him and what he saw his role as.

So.. no longer a 0% chance of Thommo playing on in 2017? :D;)

No not zero. But him resting rather than running himself into the ground is a key driver to my changed tune. But, I'd still be surprised if he's re-contracted during the season and I expect he'll need a good finish. I expect his next couple of games to be pretty good, the test will come in the games following those.
