I maintain that Port have got space in their salary cap and were bullshitting. It was only 2012 that they were utter garbage and would have been struggling to reach minimum cap for their averagely performing players. They would have definitely front-loaded some contracts during that time and into 2013. Contracts which they would be living out now, and enjoying the back end of those deals.
Maybe that's why they all stayed, generous with their contracts. Certainly wasn't the footy keeping them all here.

We say that about Hawthorn too!

Would only need to be a handful of these with a front-loading lean to free up a bunch of cash at the back end.

2016 - Hamish Hartlett, Oliver Wines, Chad Wingard
2017 - Brad Ebert, Jackson Trengove, Alipate Carlile, Jasper Pittard, Jack Hombsch, Justin Westhoff
2018 - Travis Boak, Robbie Gray, Jared Polec
2019 - Patrick Ryder, Matthew Lobbe

So after this weeks dismal selections im predicting a few of our fringe players will ask to be traded at seasons end. We would rather have players like vb, wright, mackay, martin and henderson on the list rather than kerridge, grigg, crouch, otten, lyons and cey it seems.
What do these players demand realistically?
Heres my take.
Grigg- a pick in the 30-40 range
M Crouch- a pick in the 20-35 range
Otten- late 30s
Kerridge- 30-40 range
Lyons- late 30s to early 40s
Cey- 25-30s.
Teams will take advantage of our crop of young stars out of contract and not getting games when our shit players get free rides and excessive contracts.
With this shallow draft, picks in the 30+ range are going to be potential duds. Must try and keep them.

We should keep em if the trade doesn't suit us, the crowd need to start playing hard ball from now on. Hendo should only be traded if we get a top 30. If not keep him. ( as an example)

If we lose one or two of these players its not too much of a loss if we get picks like you said. M. Crouch is definitely worth more than 20-35 based on his output

I think we've seen that players like being at clubs that are attracting good players and are successful, even though they might get less money as a result. Now, Port aren't successful this season so let's hope that continues.

They paid well under the cap in 2013 and 2014, but the new rules mean they can bank some of that for two years. They would be stupid to not have paid over the cap this year to exploit that. The question is, we're they smart and used the extra cap to front end the guys they resigned last year or early this year.

Nope, they kept players during those dark times by overpaying them what the market was offering, you would shudder if you knew what Trengove pockets

The only one that made me shudder was them supposedly paying Butcher 400K. No idea if that's true, and you would think it's absolute BS, but it's terrifying if true.

That is impressive given how much we bag 400kay about his contract, Butcher getting $400k is very unlikely to be true. Surely.

Hey guys
I think this is the year hard calls on players is needed. Hendo, Lyons, Mackay, kerridge. We need to trade and get as many draft picks under 35 as possible. Draft some young kids with good kicks and speed. We have a good young list but need some more mids coming through.
Every year they say the draft is weak and after 30 it drops off, but it's bullshit.
At the moment, our most exiting and better players are laird and Cameron, they were rookie all clubs overlooked. Our recruitment has been good lately and I think with 3 or 4 more youngsters, we'll be ready to have a realistic chance at a flag in 3 or so years.
Going on like this is going to be mediocre for another 5 years. I'm sick of hard decisions never being make and going on without a real hope of doing some damage in the finals
Welcome. As others have said, this isn't a great year for stockpiling picks. Where I think the value lies in draft picks this year is that Bris, Syd, GWS all will likely want more picks to pay for their academy and F/S selections. It's players on their fringes we should look at to bolster our list. Mitchell and Jetta (Swans), Lamb, Wilson, Hampton (GWS), Mayes and Aish (BL). These guys may be gettable and fill instant holes in our list.

Besides, Ryder and Monfries will have 2 years off. There is a bunch of cap space there.

Port get a young and up coming quality player and we get Hawthorn rejects to add depth to our SANFL team. Is there anything we excel at, apart form the size of our long suffering membership?
